Default George Clooney ‘Had No Idea’ That ‘ER’ Actress Vanessa Marquez Was Blacklisted

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/...201325785.html

Quote:
George Clooney denied accusations by former “ER” actress Vanessa Marquez that he helped to have her blacklisted after she reported suffering sexual and racial harassment on the set of the NBC medical drama.

“I had no idea Vanessa was blacklisted,” Clooney said in a statement to TheWrap on Friday. “I take her at her word. I was not a writer or a producer or a director on that show. I had nothing to do with casting. I was an actor and only an actor.”

The actor, who starred as Doug Ross on the series for five seasons, denied having any influence on casting the show or on Marquez’s career. “If she was told I was involved in any decision about her career then she was lied to,” he said. “The fact that I couldn’t affect her career is only surpassed by the fact that I wouldn’t.”

Marquez accused the cast and producers of “ER” of conspiring to have her blacklisted after she reported being sexually harassed and being discriminated against on the basis of race.

“B.S.” she tweeted in response to Clooney’s condemnation of Harvey Weinstein last week. “Clooney helped blacklist me when I spoke up [about] harassment on ER. ‘Women who don’t play the game lose career’ I did.”

Marquez, who portrayed Nurse Wendy Goldman in 27 episodes of the series between 1994 and 1997, accused Eriq La Salle and a camera operator of being “p—– grabbers,” which she said she reported to showrunner John Wells and to the show’s production company, Warner Bros. Reps for La Salle, John Wells and Warner Bros. have not responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Her accusation came after Clooney spoke out against Weinstein, the powerhouse producer who has been accused of sexual harassment and rape by multiple women, in an interview with The Daily Beast. Clooney, who worked with Weinstein on his breakout film role in “From Dusk Til Dawn,” called the producer’s alleged behavior “indefensible.”

Vanessa Marquez had a small but prominent role on the early seasons of NBC’s ratings behemoth medical drama, ER. While the show always showcased its more famous leads like Noah Wyle and Julianna Margulies, it also featured a stable of minor characters as its nursing and administrative staff, many of whom stayed on the show for much longer stints than the stars. Marquez was among the original batch of nurses, but was abruptly dismissed at the conclusion of the show’s third season, effectively ending her acting career.

Marquez recently made headlines when she said she was dismissed for pushing back against lewd and sexist comments by the show’s cast and crew, and even suggested series star George Clooney had a hand in her dismissal – a claim he denies. Marquez may not have been destined for Oscar nominations, but she certainly lost years of onscreen work for pushing back against systemic inappropriate behavior.

In no way, shape, and or form do I condone the behavior of Harvey Weinstein. I find it funny that she blames George Clooney for terrible acting career. I used to watch ER all the time when it was on. I honestly never thought she was a good actress in any sense. It really feels like she's just trying to get publicity at this point.

ER actress Vanessa Marquez shot and killed after pointing a gun at officers

Police were called to do a welfare check at Marquez's South Pasadena home on Thursday afternoon. Marquez, 49, who was best known for playing nurse Wendy Goldman on ER from 1994 to 1997, was suffering from a seizure when police arrived. Officers spoke to Marquez, who appeared to be suffering from mental issues, with the help of paramedics for 90 minutes, at which point she became combative and pointed a BB gun made to look like a semi-automatic handgun. Police shot Marquez and she was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Marquez made headlines last October when, in the wake of Harvey Weinstein scandal, she alleged she was sexually and racially harassed on the ER set. “Clooney helped blacklist me when I spoke up abt harassment on ER.’women who dont play the game lose career’I did,” she tweeted. Clooney later responded that he never blacklisted her.

Vanessa Marquez's friends respond to her shooting death, say she was suffering from chronic illness
Friends of the former ER actress, who played nurse Wendy Goldman on the first three seasons of the hit NBC drama, told The Daily Beast that she was “heartbroken” by her stalled career, and her suspicions of foul play. Marquez, who made headlines last year after she accused George Clooney and others on ER of blacklisting her from Hollywood, was shot dead Thursday by police after pulling a BB gun that looked like a handgun on officers on Thursday. The Daily Beast reports Marquez primarily interacted with her friends through the internet. She met two of her friends the #TCMParty for fans of Turner Classic Movies. “She was lovely, kind, sweet, encouraging,” says Paula Guthat, co-creator of TCM Party, who formed a relationship with Marquez via the phone even though they never met in person. “She definitely had her health challenges which were very severe. But she had a really sweet, enthusiastic personality.”

I don't think we know the full facts of this particular case, but let's not forget how distressing sexual harassment in the workplace can be.

False accusations can also be distressing.

None of that matters now. The poor woman is dead. Let her rest in peace.

The district attorney’s office determined that two South Pasadena officers acted legally when they fired 12 rounds at the 49-year-old actress after she brandished a replica firearm in August 2018. On Monday, authorities released bodycam footage of the incident.

Mother of ER's Vanessa Marquez files a wrongful death lawsuit

The suit disputes law enforcement’s claim that Marquez was shot during a wellness check when she brandished what officers believed to be a gun during their August 2018 encounter. Marquez, who recurred as Nurse Wendy Goldman on ER, was 49 when she was killed.
