Exclamation Jeffrey Tambor Officially Out at "Transparent"

Jeffrey Tambor Officially Out at "Transparent" after Harassment Claims
by Dominic Patten
February 15, 2018

Over three months after first being accused of sexual harassment on the set of "Transparent", Jeffrey Tambor is officially off the Amazon series. While it is still unclear if the upcoming fifth season of the Emmy winning Jill Soloway created show will be its last, it is very clear that Tambor will not be part of the new season at all, I’ve learned.

With the investigation by Amazon into multiple allegations of misconduct by the Golden Globe and Emmy winner recently completed, the decision to cut Tambor from "Transparent" was made in the past week.

This of course comes Tambor said on November 19 that “I don’t see how I can return to Transparent” citing the growing claims against him and “the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set.” The actor and his reps then tried to walk back that declaration after it was widely viewed as an exit from the series.

Today Amazon confirmed to Deadline that Tambor is not coming back and that the harassment investigation was recently concluded.

With the Amazon probed paused for a few weeks late last year after they lost their investigator as more and more allegations coming out all across Hollywood, Tambor’s fate seemed clear as his contract was not picked up. Fellow core cast members Gaby Hoffman, Jay Duplass, Judith Light and Amy Landecker were all renewed with the show as Soloway and her writing team pondered ways in which Tambor’s character could or could not play a part in a fifth season. That effort took another step last month as the scribes looked at what they had compiled so far and what form and with whom it would take.

Reps for Tambor and Soloway did not respond to request for comment by Deadline on Thursday about this matter.

What a shame. This was a good show. Why can't people just behave themselves?!? It really isn't that hard...

Jeffrey Tambor calls Amazon's investigation "deeply flawed and biased," blasts Transparent creator Jill Soloway's "unfair characterization of me"
“I am profoundly disappointed in Amazon’s handling of these false accusations against me,” Tambor said in a statement released a few hours after he was officially dropped from the series that earned him two Emmys. “I am even more disappointed in Jill Soloway’s unfair characterization of me as someone who would ever cause harm to any of my fellow cast mates.” He added: “In our four-year history of working together on this incredible show, these accusations have NEVER been revealed or discussed directly with me or anyone at Amazon. Therefore, I can only surmise that the investigation against me was deeply flawed and biased toward the toxic politicized atmosphere that afflicted our set. As I have consistently stated, I deeply regret if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone and I will continue to vehemently defend myself. I also deeply regret that this ground-breaking show, which changed so many lives, is now in jeopardy. That, to me, is the biggest heartbreak.”

What does Jeffrey Tambor's ouster mean for the future of Transparent?
Will Tambor's absence cast a pall over the Amazon series, or could it bring fresh interest in a show that had lost its buzz even before Tambor was accused of sexual harassment?

Transparent was running out of interesting material for Maura Pfefferman, so Jeffrey Tambor's ouster could be a good thing
By Season 4, says Kathryn VanArendonk, the Amazon series began "to cycle through the same beats the series has already explored" about Maura: "her childhood, the history of gender in her family, trauma of the parents revisited on the children, public-facing and private-facing personas. It’s not that there’re no new stories to tell about Maura; it’s that lately, Transparent hasn’t seemed especially interested in telling them."

Jeffrey Tambor's former Transparent assistant on his firing: "I do however believe it is just. He has done this to himself"
"For Mr. Tambor to now characterize this investigation as 'biased' and 'politicized' is an insult to the numerous people he has worked with through the years who were forced to participate in an investigation created by his own actions," Van Barnes, who worked for Tambor for two years and was the first to accuse him of sexual harassment, said in a statement. "Mr. Tambor’s lengthy abuse and harassment of me continues to haunt me and is a clear indication of how we got to this point. I take no celebration in the firing of Mr. Tambor from Transparent, because this man's actions have jeopardized many people's jobs, especially many transgender people struggling to find work in Hollywood."
