Question Doogie Howser, M.D. Boned the Fish When...

http://www.bonethefish.com/viewtopics.php?1280

Quote:
Doogie Howser, M.D. is a television comedy-drama starring Neil Patrick Harris as a brilliant doctor who also faces the problems of being a normal teenager. ABC aired the show from September 1989 to March 1993 for four seasons totaling 97 episodes.

  • Other Thoughts:

When you found out that Vinny was really 38 in real life.
    Child prodigies don't shave
    episode #1
THE MYSTERY WAS GONE WHEN DOOG DID WANDA.
    After he lost his virginity
When Doogie found a "dump" on the beach in CA and transformed the dump to the doogie pad!
Who thought a teenage doctor would be entertaining?
Doogie was the biggest ***** in the world. How the hell did he get a show? The best acting he ever did was when he was on The Simpsons as Bart after Bart was accused of killing Seymour Skinner.
You're a television producer, and here's the premise of your show: a child genius with a college degree who practices medicine but still lives with his parents. Then, after a couple of seasons, the kid turns 18. And loses his virginity. And moves out of his parents' house. And becomes a legal adult. This is a clear sign your premise is dead.
Hi, I had never found out the Vinny was 38 in real life.....um..maybe because he's not! Max Casella is gonna turn 32 in June! Maybe you were over exaggerating to make it funny but could you change it to 26 or 28 cus that's around his real age back then. I know this sounds really stupid but that's what I do, correcting things. I have a problem, I know. Bye.
To the person who submitted the above post: why don't you try correcting your own crappy grammar?
Doogie's dates a girl named Wanda.
The one where Vinnie turned into Tony Shaloub and started writing horror novels!!! oops, wait...
SPECIAL GUEST STAR: I just read that Denise Richards was one of Doogie's dates and when they met again in the movie Starship Troopers, he didn't even remember her. I bet he remembers her now!
Doogie Howser was jumped the minute Vinny was brought into the mix. For God's sake, an italian film director named Vinny? Could we get a little more stereotypical? Please.... I mean, did the black guy who only eats BBQ and the Irish guy who does nothing but drink already have a job?
When Doogie and Vinnie were held hostage by the black-street-punk-who-really-isn't-that-bad-once-you-get-to-know-him at the 7-11. The capper is the guy lands a job at the hospital working with Doogie a few episodes later. Jeez, whatever happed to "3-5 for attempted robbery?"
It jumped 5 seconds into the pilot
This show was terrible from the start. The only good things Vinnie and Doogie did were "Ed Wood" and "Starship Troopers"
Doogie was no longer a child prodigy but just another young doctor.
I seem to remember, towards the end, Doogie giving a very intimate exam to one of the female cast members. I'm pretty sure it was Vinnie's g/f. Definitely jumped the shark at that point!
the show was supposed to be about a young young genius kid in sneakers and a lab coat that never fit...when the coat finally fits, HELLO SHARK. The charm of the original show was gone after that.
When the dude who held up the convenience store ate dinner over Doogie's house and thought that they didn't have enough chicken for everyone (they were eating Cornish game hens).
that show sucked after doogie moved...who the hell's idea was that... after they were involved in the robbery at the convenience store also gets an honorable mention.
Doogie and his Dad went on a fishing trip to bond. Then, a man has some type of accident and needs immediate surgery on his brain. Doogie and his Dad bring him into a log cabin, and they open the guy's head with a power drill. They then bond while performing emergency brain surgery on this man. Doogie and his Dad realize that there is more to life than the little petty things they argued over!
When Doogie went on a TV game show with Vinny as Alex Trebeck! Those writers should burn in hell.
Doogie dodges the deed. After nurturing a Laker Girl's twisted ankle, and accepting a dinner invitation, the good doctor rejects her advances back at his pad. Turns out he RESPECTS her...
Why is it that Doogie had this obsolete computer? And all he had to do was turn the computer on and up popped his stupid journal? That's not how computers work! And what was the point of the journal anyway?
The show never really jumped the shark. It was ok in the beginning and ok at the end. A previous poster mentioned Doogie's computer diary and I thought this was stupid as well. He gave these general thoughts that could be one of numerous days in his life. "Sometimes life can throw you some curves. You can face them or you can avoid them. Today I learned that facing them can result in great things. Isn't that what life is all about?" This guy is supposed to be a genius? Write something philosophical or at least write something that will clue you in to what you're talking about. What's the point of a diary when you just have these stupid generalizations that don't even rise to the intellectual level of a fortune cookie? Glad I finally have a forum to get that off my chest. Now I can get on with my life.
This show jumped right at the Series Premier and I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. This was one of the most boring and stupid shows I've ever seen, the last thing we needed at that time was another geeky actor being something that he could never be in reality. Worst of all there was no studio audience, had there been one it might have spiced up the show more I think, without one it was very slow and dull. Doogie also had a very nice looking girlfriend, but in real life if this sitcom was true she would only have been after him for his money because he was a geek and so was the entire cast. Very poor show and I'm glad reruns aren't heavy.
NO WAY does any normal, living, breathing hetero or bi-sexual male turn down sex from a Laker girl. I was in my college dorm watching that episode and Doogie almost started a riot when he turned down a sure score. "Doogie is a homo" signs were posted all over dorm for a week.
Ah, my 8th grade crush. Still have 6 videos of Doogie episodes. It was just classic television. In addition to NPH's general hotness (at the time), the show was funny. Too much to mention here. You'll have to just trust me.
The absurdity of the premise overshadowed everything excepting possibly the commercial breaks.
Why in God's name would a genius like Doogie, a doctor at 12 or whatever, be best friends with the village idiot? Plus, even if a kid was smart enough to graduate medical school, there are laws that prevent someone that age from practicing so the whole concept is ridiculous..
doogie howser a teenage doctor. what the heck were the writer's thinking. i would sooner believe peter pan could fly then a teenager being a doctor major shark jumper the only thing that could've made this show worse is if ted McGinley played doogie!
Doogie Howser, MD jumped the shark when the rest of the gang graduated from high school. I mean, Wanda's suggesting that Doogie doesn't understand the pressures of college life (at art school in Chicago). "Kiss my ass, Wanda!" Doogie should have said, "I went to Princeton when you were learning to use crayons!"
Did anyone ever notice that even by the last season Doogie never got pubes? And he lost his virginity? And Vinnie was like 32 years old? what's up with that?
I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved Doogie Howser! I thought it had a good combination of humor and seriousness. And I thought the cast was great as well. I'd love to see more reruns somewhere!
Maybe it's just me but I thought it jumped when Wanda left. She was so hot! I only watched the show to see her. Whatever happened to Lisa Dean Ryan???
Day One! It sucked! Who came up with this crap, I hated this show because it had cheap plots and stupid acting. I could make this post long, but I will just state that no one can very really be like this Doogie in real life. That's because no one can become a doctor that fast and that young. Who would let Neil Patrick Harris operate on them. If I saw him I would run out the hospital! Maybe been put to sleep during surgery is a good thing! But I would be praying that he wouldn't make a mistake or there would be malpractice suit up his ass! This show is a lousy excuse from television. Doogie having sex with hia girlfriend was just nasty! He is one bad actor that Neil Patrick Harris! Why cancel some of the best shows in order to put on this crap. ABC became the network for crap in the 80's. Remember Mr. Belvedeer who came up with that? No talent in the sitcom programming department.
Id just like to say, that Vinnie was 22 when the show started. NOT 32, NOT 28, 22!!! Max Casella was born in '68, trust me, Im pretty much obsessed with him okay? Thats all. Thank you, and have a good day! Oh, by the way, I never got to see the show, and I really want to, so as far as Im concerned, Doogie Howser is a good show, kay? They need to bring it back or something!
Wanda Plenn was my favorite supporting character: I would classify her as "cool" rather than "hot." I mean, wasn't she cool in "Doogie's Awesome, Excellent Adventure" when she helped heal the rift between Doogie and Vinnie by persuading Vinnie to lend Doogie the money needed to get Dr. Dave's BMW out of impound? Getting rid of her was at least a medium-sized mistake: it led to the breakup of the "Four Musketeers," as Vinnie once called the foursome consisting of himself, Doogie, Wanda and Janine. (I personally called them the "Fantastic Four.") That robbed the series of a considerable amount of its charm. In fact I had rather hoped that the series would last long enough to show Doogie and Wanda getting married (though it may yet happen in a reunion movie, if Neil Patrick Harris agrees to do one). Who the hell cared about Michele or Cecilia?
Doogie jumped the second he started typing. GEEZ, if he's a genius, then why does he have to type SOOOO SLOOOOOW? It's like he turns from brilliant to downs syndrome in a flash -- wait a minute, Doogie kinda looks like he has DS anyway.
Doogie suffered from JamesVanderbeekitis. His forehead must have expanded at a rate 3 times faster than his body. "Would ya look at the size of that noggin'? HEAD! Move that gargantuan cranium out of me way!" I mean you could project drive-in movies on that thing! And Vinny? What was Ralph Macchio busy? That episode with their girlfriends at the pool party, though... Wanda in a bikini is Must-See Rerun TV.
This piece of nonsense jumped the first time Vinny referred to Doogie's parents as "Mr. or Mrs. H" I don't know anyone who thought that was funny
I couldn't have jumped, because it sucked the whole way through. That person who keeps posting about how old max casella was, chill out, he sucks too. He was actually 102, and you need a new hobby.
The show jumped the shark for me when Lisa Dean Ryan left the series. I thought she was wonderful as Wanda. And just look at her now: She plays the understanding wife whose husband returns from a wild weekend in Vegas in the popular Dockers commercial!
Simple... Doogie hooks up with Wanda. Overnight, Howser goes from child prodigy to just another young hotshot doctor with an unprofessional nickname and a midlife crisis with enough youth to enjoy it. As an aside, you would think a character that smart would be an intolerable pretentious *****. Only in Hollywood...
Didn't JTS when Doogie & Vinnie were held hostage in that Mini-Mart by that black guy. It JTS when they made the black guy part of the cast. He was the "good intentions, bad choices" criminal. Whatever. Doogie was a PANZY. Vinnie was an old bastard. Wanda was kinda cute in the beginning. Cute premise for a show. Lasted too long.
From the start - 16 years old, a doctor, and hangs out with kids his own age. I don't think so.
This show jumped the minute Doogie was being bullied by some stupid schmuck and Doogie began to prepare for the "fight". I remember they played that song that goes "get up, get up, get busy, do it, get up and move that body....before the night is over..." Did Doogie think he was gonna get ripped and buffed over a weekend? Hey, did anyone notice that Vinnie has a small role on the Sopranos? I tell ya one thing, he doesn't look younger than his real age anymore! He's killed punks and vandalized a ton of **** with other goombas. What would Doogie say?
im not really sure it "jumped the shark", there was just stuff that mad it really irritating the whole way through. one of them was that doogie was a really boring guy. he had nnnooooo personality. it got on my nerves, and he really did type slow...like really slow. and he always wrote some DEEP PROFOUND THOUGHT. and he always looked up and thought about it before he typed it. and the theme song...how annoying is that music?..its really annoying. they were really corny plots too.....and whenever the main character loses his virginity...thats when it jumped the shark......yep, when he lost his virginity. oh by the way max casella was about 21-22 years old, not 38....so yeah, it jumped the shark when doogie lost his virginity.
There was a guy at my high school who everyone swore was Doogie Howser's twin. That guy got more action from that fact than any other person I know. Girls were always swooning when he walked by. When I looked back now, neither he OR Doogie were very good looking-the fact that Wanda, the babe, was interested in Doogie made him attractive. I have to assume now that it was because of his "personality." If I was Wanda, I wouldn't have given it up for that tool. I would chased after Vinny-now that's where the looks and personality were at!!!
This show jumped the shark a few times during its run. I definitely believe the final jump was when doogie moved into his new "pad". However I do like Neil Patrick Harris, he does act morose at times but overall I think he is a good and capable actor. I liked his parents and most of the people that he worked with at the Hospital. I agree with the posters who have difficulty accepting the fact that the Hospital would hire that guy who robbed the store and took Doogie and Vinny hostage. You people had me laughing on the floor with your comments about him, very true! On the other hand, I detested Wanda. Yes she was a babe and had a great body but all she did was whine whine whine! Constantly depressed about something and that made me want to throw her into the shark tank. Vinny was an annoying little wimp who made me not want to punch him but slap his stupid pimply face off. But the one who made me truly sick was Vinny's girlfriend, if you want to call her that since she treated him like total ****. She never got intimate with him and every time he would even want to hold her hand she would have a cow. I would have dumped that slut in a heartbeat, add to that I would have dropped her into Iraq with Saddam's two cockroach sons, they would've given that tuna fish what she deserved. Having said that I still like to catch the show now and then when it's on T.V. A good show.
The person who said "Vinny was actually 102, get a new hobby." Hilarious! It made me LOL. I love the comments you people make. Anyway, Doogster jumped when they did that parody of him on Rugrats, named "Hogie Dooser." LMAO! "Here's your chocolate milk, Doctor." He had to sit on top of a phone book because he was short, and he goofed up and said that Angelica's leg was broken when it really wasn't. Way too funny.
After seeing his past acting roles (which include Racetrack from "Newsies" as well as Vinnie from "Doogie Howser"),I think of Max Casella as an Italian Gary Coleman.
Well I will say now that I am 28 years old that the show JTS from Day One. but, I must admit when I was 13 I thought it was fantastic. back then, the thought of being a genius adolescent in the world of adults seemed exciting. we all grow up thank god and by the time I was 16, I wasn't watching anymore :-). But the main reason I tuned in.... Mitchell Anderson! OMG what a honey. I knew it then, I still think it now. He played Dr Jack Macguire in seasons 1 and 2. (He was also in the Karen Carpenter made for tv movie playing her brother). What a smile. The show definitely lost the only sex appeal it had when he went. As for Neil Patrick Harris, I used to think he was sweet and smart(?) the way he talked, but now he is just annoying! what makes me laugh even more is shows like Dawsons Creek and the Gilmore Girls where all the kids are trying to talk like braniacs just like Doogie did! And as for Max Casella who played Vinnie.....he was very funny. but now I realise just how "stereotypical" the character was. Max must have attended the Joe Pesci school of acting. and Max was born in 1967 making him 36 now. just had to join that debate ha ha. he is only 5ft 3, so yes he is a shorty which adds to how spookily young looking he is. but recently i saw a very dodgy photograph of him with a moustache - looks like he belongs in some freaky porn movie!!! Lisa Dean Ryan who played Wanda - somebody explain the appeal to me?? Maybe its a guy thing and they like the whole 'sultry' (for lack of a better word)vibe she has going on. In my adolescent daydreams I thought Doogie would be with someone who had a personality. Finally, the show dived completely when they hired that 'troubled' guy who held them hostage to work in the hospital. that storyline sucked. a shame too because the guy (i don't know his name) was actually a good actor.
doogie howser such a good show it jumped when they had that creepy show where Doogie is reunited with his babysitter (was it chelsea noble of Growing Pains fame?) and they end up necking. First, that is just really creepy, a babysitter getting it going with your former babysittee. Second, this is also a very unrealistic episode since how many women would get things going with their ex-babysittee? Very few and those who would have some serious problems.
I really don't think this show jumped. Vinny was always my favorite character. You have to admit that he looked the age he was playing even if he was in his twenties. I think in '92 he was 24. Max Casella, the actor who played him, is actually very talented, one of my favorites. Also, as far as the computer diary went, just because some one is a doctor, doesn't mean they are a philosopher. He is just a kid, really.
Ok, I will admit that if I watched this show now, I would probably say it was terrible from the start. As a kid, however, it was great fun. For me, it jumped once they started doing "very special" episodes about the kids losing their virginity. First of all, their main audience was a bunch of ten-year-olds, so although sex normally helps ratings, it seems that in this case it wouldn't. We all still thought the opposite sex had cooties when we watched this show! Second, they started trying to get serious more often after that point, which ruined the show. A sitcom about a teen genius should not try to be too serious.
Okay. Max Casella was only 22 when Doogie Howser first started. Not 38. He's not even 38 now so I don't know what you guys are going on about. He's a phenomenal actor. Why do you feel the need to bash him? He never did anything wrong or even anything that deserves to be chastised like you're doing. Get over yourselves and just accept his talent. But the show...downhill when they had sex. It happens. Some people think that.
Wow, I remember this episode when Vinnie-I-am-older-than-dirt-Delfino (hehe, take that to all the Max Casella-loving 14 year olds) tried on his superman outfit from 3rd grade and it still fit. This show jumped when the Doog was still working on DOS. Too old, and there's no conflict, because seriously, what does a child doctor do when he's all grown up? Oh yeah, still be a doctor.
This show never was all that great, but what really made a hater out of me was the episode where Doogie ended up working (for one day) at a FAST FOOD JOINT...for crying out loud, you're a DOCTOR, Doog!!! It ended up being made worse by Doogie agreeing that it is just as hard, and takes just as much intelligence, to work at a fast food joint as it does to be a doctor. BULL****!!! Why, oh WHY, do SO MANY sitcoms think they have to have a "working at a fast food and it's harder than it looks" episode? Is it because so many who watch this are losers who work at McDonald's? Or could it be that McDonald's sponsors so many of these cheesy sitcoms? It just may be part of an insidious plot by McDonald's on their path to world domination. Everybody thought Ray Kroc's first little hamburger stand was a pipe dream, but he knew what he was doing. He wants to rule the world from the grave, and he is, because of Doogie Howser, the ageless Max Casella (who is, despite all other assertions on this site, 87 years, 6 months, and 3 days old), and Vickie Lawrence, poised to do just that.
This show never jumped. I used to watch every week. We had a saying in my marching band, just before a competition we always said "Do it for Doogie". As for those who don't like Doogie's computer journal, it is technically the first blog.
