When Earl went to Prison., what an awful season it was. It got good again the following year but then NBC canceled it on a cliffhanger.

I loved the first two seasons of My Name is Earl, it was great to see a sitcom about someone owning up to any mistakes they made. Then around the third season they started focusing more on the cruder elements of the show, and it became basically a show about trashy rednecks. Yeah, the list was still around, but it was getting more and more de-emphasized. Maybe it would have improved if there had been a fifth season, but we'll never know.

Greg Garcia, the creator of Earl and Raising Hope does an excellent job with a broad story of what he would like to have, and the two shows were fantastic when they first came out.

However, around the third season on both shows, there for some reason had to be a departure from that norm to make both shows unwatchable. Earl going to prison killed that show. It went back to what was great about it the first two seasons, but most of us who like Earl ran off in droves. I wish HBO or one of the cable networks would have done the show (and allowed swearing and nudity!), but that is not here nor there, and by and large, the show put out three decent seasons out of four.

Raising Hope bombed when Jimmy married Sabrina and Sabrina had this kickass, expensive house (I know it was probably a set, but loved the retro 1960's house). Show lost its focus, of a young man struggling in by himself to raise a baby in a lower class home while looking for love. Jimmy found love, moved in with Linda Rondstadt's hot daughter in the Hollywood Hills and it doesnt matter what job he did because Sabrina's family and inheritance paid for everything. Lost its focus.

Dont kill a formula that works. I dont know why Garcia does not get this (even though he is a millionaire, but there is always more money and success out there.)

Simple answer, Earl goes to prison.

Loved the first two seasons of the series, but when Earl goes to prison, the show just flopped and died. Those episodes SUCKED. I own the series on DVD and just more or less skip that season. I think they realized it, but way too late and by the time they righted the ship, it was too late and people stopped watching.

The idea of the show was fantastic, and should have kept it simple, a once less than honest guy makes a list and tries to right the wrongs to people (with the consequences it brings). Great idea.

If Earl did not have the prison episodes, and stayed on course with their original idea, it would have lasted two more seasons. Oh well......

(Sort of like on Garcia's second show. "Raising Hope" when Jimmy gets the girl of his dreams, and lives in a new house...that sort of ended the show and the idea of the show. Duh!

Also, a shout out to Chubby's BBQ, with the sloppiest ribs in town!

Yeah, I'm beginning to distrust him. I don't like getting stuck on a story, only to have it turned upside down later.
