Day 1. One of the most unfunny spin-offs of all time. Who in the world thought they could continue this show without Redd Foxx. The other spin-off Sanford was much better.

  • Other Thoughts:

This is a sequel to Sanford and Son, where an old Army buddy of Fred's runs a hotel that used to be the junkyard. Oh well, at least it had Aunt Esther.
The show was in trouble from the start as Lamont and Fred were both refusing to do the show, so the studio decided to give Aunt Esther the starring role of trying to help run the Sanford Arms Hotel with the help of Fred's old army buddy. The jokes were ridiculous, stupid and lame and Esther (Lawanda Page) couldn't lead the show on her own....AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER!!!....the only aspect of Sanford and Son that's even close is Cal the fat white hillbilly trying to "replace" Lamont... I am of the opinion that the Sanford Arms was one of the WORST shows EVER to be aired in TV History...with What's Happening Now and 227 a close second and third...
This show has not jumped the shark. If anyone jumped the shark on this, it was Fox for not giving it the respect it deserves. They show first run episodes out of proper order and they have recently cut back their order to 17 episodes from the initial 22. This show just gets better and better with each passing week. Watch now before it goes away for good! This could be another "Freaks and Geeks" style best show nobody watched.
Sanford Arms represents 70s television programming at its worst - a pathetic attempt to keep an ailing franchise alive following the departure of its principals. During Redd Foxx's holdout for a new contract during Sanford and Son, we saw that Demond Wilson, Whitman Mayo, and LaWanda Page simply couldn't carry the show by themselves. When Foxx and Wilson both left Sanford and Son for good, that should have been the end of it. I consider Sanford Arms, along with the episodes of Chico and the Man with Gabriel Melgar in place of the late Freddie Prinze, to be two of the most desperate and pathetic attempts of all time to breathe life into moribund sitcoms.
A great show! Yes, the arrival of Sanford Arms may have marked the beginning of the end for some, but I think the show jumped when they cleaned up Bubba's wardrobe. During the final season, they had him in polyester Haggars and open collared shirts. Before, he would appear in his porkpie hat, rumpled clothes and looking to get drunk with Fred ("Here bunny, bunny, bunny!"). Even when he was wearing those wild jackets and ties during the show's middle years, he remained "classic" Bubba. But that casual guy look he was seen in the final season was what killed it for me. (By the way, Bubba's finest moment was when he and Fred simulated heart attacks after they thought Lamont was killing a white woman. Fred: "Oh! My son's killin' a white woman. Hear that, Elizabeth? I'm comin' to join 'ya, honey. But I'm not alone. I got a big, fat friend comin' with me!")

Default HOW SANFORD & SON ENDED

http://www.tvparty.com/70-sanford-arms.html

Quote:
When CBS attempts to save Two and a Half Men without the show's star Charlie Sheen they are not going into uncharted territory. NBC faced the same dilemma when they lost Redd Foxx, the star of their number one sitcom Sanford & Son in 1977. The result, Sanford Arms, was a true debacle and one of the first programs cancelled that fall.
