Default One Season Wonders: Teen Angel (1997)

http://www.wewantinsanity.com/am2/pu...en_Angel.shtml

Quote:
ABC launched TGIF (Thank Goodness It's Friday since the more common meaning of the initialism) Friday programming in 1989, flag-shipped by the mighty Perfect Strangers (which still holds the title in my book of having one of the best theme songs of all time). In the spring of 1997 Family Matters, Clueless and Step by Step all left the coveted 2 hour block (8PM to 10PM), two picked up by CBS and the other by UPN (none of which survived the move with any dignity). Boy Meets World (James Guttman approved, I'm sure) was still around, but Sabrina the Teenage Witch had become a somewhat surprising hit. Looking to exploit the idea of supernatural sitcoms, ABC commissioned You Wish (a show so bland I can't see myself doing a OSW on it) and our current show Teen Angel. Created by The Simpsons veteran Al Jean and his buddy Mike Reiss from the same show, Teen Angel managed nearly a full season of episodes before ending up cancelled.

I actually enjoyed Teen Angel along with the other one-season shows that aired on TGIF...You Wish, Brother's Keeper, Aliens in the Family, Muppets Tonight!, Odd Man Out, & Two of a Kind.

I wish they could've stuck around for a few more seasons.

I loved this show early on when Maureen McCormick costarred, but all of a sudden, a couple months in, she was dumped with the explanation that Steve's mom had all of a sudden moved out, his dad & grandpa moved in, and everyone else stayed the same. I suspect this happened because ABC still had to do something with Jerry Van Dyke (now the grandpa) after You Wish was cancelled so quickly. Ms. McCormick described her dismissal from the show in her bio as a firing ordered by the network. I guess that Tommy Hinckley (as the dad) came cheaply enough that ABC could afford to pay both him & Van Dyke for Ms. McCormick's salary. Hinckley did have a strong resemblance to Corbin Allred, who played his son Steve, though.

I always hated that Maureen was gone from the show. One moment, she was there and then the next, she was out. I then lost interest in the show. It's such a shame too. What mother leaves her kids like that? I didn't like that!!! 1997 was a good year for Mo. That year, I saw her in a guest role on "Touched By An Angel", then she hit the talk show circuit talking about her work on the new sitcom "Teen Angel". In that year, she had the lead role in "The Barbara Mandrell Story". She was batting a thousand.

I think I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I remember when these shows were on. I definitely LOVE Aliens in the Family and Muppets Tonight! as a loyal Muppets and Henson fan. (They both need DVD releases! But first Disney needs to get the rest of The Muppet Show on DVD!)
I also enjoy Two of a Kind- probably mainly from growing up watching the Olsen twins on "Full House". As for the others, I don't remember too well. I do recall "You Wish" and "Teen Angel" and not really getting into either all that much- I have theological issues with "Teen Angel" (similar ones that I have with "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched By An Angel"), but I suppose it's a cute enough show- I just didn't get that much into it or the similar "You Wish" series.

I remember a few of those supernatural sitcoms thanks of course because I've kept my TV Guide Fall previews from the 90's.

But Teen Angel was something cool I think because the two main protagonists were teenagers so it didn't have to be boggled down by adding cutesy pesky kids, but yeah this show shouldn've lasted longer than it did, the Teen Angel actor had good comic timing reminded me of a young Jim Carrey.
