Question Salute Your Shorts Boned the Fish When...

http://www.bonethefish.com/viewtopics.php?1457

Quote:
Salute Your Shorts was a comedy that aired on Nickelodeon. It ran from 1991 to 1992, and was based on the book of the same name. It follows the adventures of the campers as they pull pranks and get into mischief at Camp Anawanna.

  • Other Thoughts:

How good can a show be with a character named Donkeylips?
God, this show was horrible. The acting was a disgrace. The writing was a joke. If you haven't seen the show, just listen to some of the character's names: Sponge, Ug, Donkey Lips, Budnick, Zizi, Telly, Dina. What were they thinking? A truly horrible show.
Someone, please tell me that a television show called "Salute Your Shorts" isn't real. This is a goof, right?
To the person wondering if it was real... sorry, but it was. Hard to believe, eh? If you need more proof, I think Nickelodeon still shows reruns of it on Sundays or something. Basically, it was about the wacky misadventures of a bunch of losers at a summer camp. The characters were all perfect stereotypes: there was a nerd, a punk, a fat slob, a jock, a rich bitch, a new age freak, and a useless timid kid. I could pull better writing out of my ass... come to think of it, I think I did once.
O.K. i watched this show when I was a kid and loved it, but just one thing: in the episode when zizi and deena are collecting laundry to spell out a message 4 some rich guy in a helicopter, TELLY {THE BACK GIRL) IS WALKING TOPLESS WITH ONE OF THE GUYS. swear to god. if you don't believe me, just watch that one sometime. She's walking completely normally-TOPLESS. i'm sorry, but it's not that big of a deal- she's flatter than the computer screen you are reading this on right now. lol, just had to get that out in the open. umm, hehe. =0
the people that commented on this already must have never been kids.. my best memories of my childhood involved me and my best friend watching this show.. bad writing my ass..
Gosh this show was terrible, the writing was a joke and the characters names were horrible, but I still managed to watch it and like it. Whatever.
This was a cool show. It was a lot better than the crap Nickelodeon shows now.
I was also a kid, and let me tell you, it was a fun show. I'd come home from camp, plop on the couch, and watch it with my sister. Okay, it wasn't the best-acted and it wasn't Shakespeare. But it was a fun show for kids to watch back in the good ol' days where Nickelodeon actually had good shows. I still enjoyed it years later upon watching it. It was the kind of adventures me and my friends always wanted to get into at camp. Was I the only kid that wanted to start a cult of a cursed cow skull, or play capture the flag in the woods with water balloons?
YOU BLOW@#%!@$!@4 GO GET COW GOAT NUTS BECAUSE I AM MAD@!#%!@$ SALUTE YOUR SHORTS IS MY FAVORITE SHOW IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!!!!!!!! YOUR HATE MESSAGE IS NOW IN MY PROFILE AND YOUR CAREER AT JUMP THE SHARK IS GOING DOWN!!!!!!! SALUTE YOUR SHORTS RULES, WHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT, ANY SHOW WITH DONKEYLIPS AS A CHARACTER IS FUNNY AS HELL AND YOU KNOW YOU'LL PROBABLY WET YOUR PANTS WHILE VIEWING! EDDIE C. GELFEN IS THE GREATEST!!!!!!!! EDDIECGELFENFANPAGE.COM IS MINE BABY, YOU CAN'T HAVE IT! SALUTE YOUR SHORTS IS THE GREATEST!!!!!! WE RUN WE JUMP WE SWIM AND PLAY!!!!!!
It was my favorite show when I was 7. Then I grew up. I still watch the reruns if I'm bored.
This show was ****! Didn't anyone notice that Budnick is SAM from Diff'rent Strokes?? What the hell was with that whack ass haircut? This show was awful, and those kids never ever seemed to leave camp.
I want a picture of Zeke the Plumber!
Alright kids...for anyone that says that Salute Your Shorts was poorly written or just a bad show all together obviously wasn't a kid when this showed aired or just never watched it because I think it was possibly one of the best shows ever on Nickelodeon. I mean it was pure genius! I remember being a kid and getting so excited when the beginning to that show came on because I knew I was in store for a great episode of a great show! So maybe the writing wasn't top-notch...but they weren't writing for some adult drama...they were writing for a little kids show! I think Salute your Shorts along with the other Nick classics (hey dude, welcome freshman, clarissa explains it all...) totally shaped my childhood. I wanted to be those characters sooo bad! That's what a kid does...and I'm sure other people that watched those shows will agree with me when i say that it had and still does have an air of greatest to it. I know, it's just a TV show but it's a cool tv show...and it has memories!
Camp Onawana, we hold you in our hearts, and when we think about you, ..this thing came apart! This show never jumped. It was one of the best shows on TV. Nick needs to put it back on the air... I miss it!
HEY! THIS WAS A GREAT SHOW. IT WAS FUNNY - But they went and got that kid with the big nose.
The show was a great show! No it wasn't "Of Mice and Men" i'll give you that but it was something to watch on a sleepy sunday. but the moment it jumped, IT JUMPED HARD [the stupid cursed skull was the jumping point!
I dont know what these cheeba hoggers were smoking, but "salute your shorts" was damn near the illest show ever. How can it not be cool with a big fat funny looking kid named Donkeylips? So in the future, dont hog my cheeba, dont salute my shorts, and dont dis "Salute your Shorts"
This show never jumped the shark. I am 14 (as of 2000) and when i was 6 or 7, my life was in Nickelodeon. My favourite shows were this, Wild and Crazy Kids, Hey Dude, What Did you Do? and Rugrats. This was a great show.
It Never Jumped. Come on you guys, this is Salute your shorts. You can't tell me that you'd prefer watching the Catdog crap they have today over Nickelodeon's Golden days. Doesn't anyone remember just sitting on your couch on Sundays watching all of this great comedy? Are you Afraid of the dark, Welcome Freshmen, Clarissa Explains it All, Pete and Pete, Salute your shorts...? I remember the good ole' days when they had the big orange couch and the tacky early 90's shows that you could sit and watch for hours on end without ever feeling bored. The early 90's may have sucked, but at least have respect for it! This is the **** I grew up on. All I have to say is that I feel incredibly bad for kids that watch Nickelodeon today. Catdog? Spongebob squarepants? The Wild Thornberries? You want to talk about pulling better writing out of your ass...
The best thing about this show was Dina (Heidi Lucas).I watched this show just to check her out. SHE IS SO HOT.
I don't think this show jumped the shark, but i swear I saw Donkey Lips on Singled Out on MTV. He was one of the finalists, but didn't win the date, the girl probably recognized his voice and kicked him off. There was also a girl in a dance class with me that we called Donkey Lips, she was the female version of him. I loved this show.
I can't believe there are so many negative comments about this show. I was around 11 when this show hit the air, and I loved it. So what if the names were a little strange and the plots were a bit predictable. This was Nickelodeon. What were you expecting, landmark television?
budnick sports a mullet. Kevin "ug" Lee has a borderline mullet. 1 and 1/2 mullets in one show? That's a little excessive.
I SAW DONKEY LIPS WORKING AT SOME COMIC BOOK SHOP AT THE UNIVERSAL CITY WALK . MY DATE ASKED HIM IF HE WAS INDEED THE DONKEY LIPS HE CONFESSED TO IT IN A LOW VOICE AND SAID THIS WAS WHAT HE DID BETWEEN GIGS!!! LONG LIVE DONKEY LIPS
This show never jumped! It was on when Nickelodeon was in its golden age! Pete & Pete, Welcome Freshemen, You Can't Do That On Television, Fifteen, and Double Dare were the best running shows on Nick along w/ Salute Your Shorts. Also, it almost jumped when they replaced Michael w/ Pinsky. Anyway, did anyone notice that Michael plays Tobey Macguire's friend in "Pleasantville"? And Pinskey was Joey on Boy Meets World? Weird, huh?
Never jumped. One of the best eps was the Capture the Flag game when Donkeylips overcame his fears--and they still lost. (And, fisk, mullets are an integral part of growing one's hair out, by Mousse!) "Shampoo . . . is . . . my bride."
Yes, the writing did suck but the sight of Dina in a bikini jumpstarted my puberty. Good bless Dina!
Salute Your Shorts was definitely my favorite show as a kid. I thought Hey Dude was great, and then came along SYS. It never jumped...although it did kinda suck when Pinsky came along, but not because of Pinsky, but because of Budnick's reaction. The whole show originally circled around Michael's character and his interactions with the other campers, and the fact that he was the "new kid" and adjusting to life at camp. Budnick's early bullying, along with Donkey Lips, of Michael, and then the slow evolution where they tolerated each other, made the show. However when Budnick acted as if he lost his best friend when Pinsky arrived, his coolness factor went way down...Budnick's coolness is what made the show strong! Great show though, I miss it, wish it was in reruns...although I don't know if I'd "get it" anymore.
OMG PEOPLE!!!!! THAT SHOW WAS THE BEST SHOW! IT HAS NEVER AND WILL NEVER JUMP THE SHARK!!!!! THE SHARK IS FAR OUT TO SEA!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS SOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS SHOW NEVER @#$%^ JUMPED! IT WASNT STUPID! IT WAS GOOD! i WAS RAISED ON HEY DUDE, ROCKOS MODERN LIFE AND SALUTE YOUR SHORTS!!! THIS IS WHY I AM TODAY! A CYNICAL TEEN WITH AN AUSTRALIAN ACCENT WITH A PET WALLABEE WHO HAS A TASTE FOR WESTERN CLOTHING AND LIKES TO GO TO SUMMER CAMP!
I'm sorry but the first time I watched this show I thought it was so ridiculous! I don't know if it's just me but I thought it was kinda strange and I was pretty little when they aired it so I dunno but now that I remember it, even if I did watch it when I'm a teenager, I wouldn't have liked it anyways. I hope I'm making myself clear. Well, I think this show jumped from day one and I hope no one will ever come up with a show like this again! BLAH!
This show never jumped the shark; I watched it all the time when I was little. It was stupid, but it wasn't supposed to be intelligent. It was supposed to be mindless fun for entertainment. Stupid shows like this give people a break from reality, which is sometimes pretty harsh. People, especially kids, need a break from reality, and stupid shows like this give them a break from the gloom and doom of life.
How could this show jump? It's obvious that its only objective was to entertain kids and make them laugh. Who DIDN'T love this show? I'm glad I was such a geek and ended up taping every episode! It's so awesome when new people and friends are over at my apartment (I'm 21 now!) and I say, "Remember that show, 'Salute Your Shorts?'" and OF COURSE they do because it was the GREATEST kid's show of its time, and I whip out the tapes. We get stoned and drunk and watch every episode back to back. NEVER, never jumped!
Salute Your Shorts is the kind of show that never jumped the shark. Why? Because its the show that has anything to do with summer camp and its the show that makes it fun with activities and games not to mention the genre of this show is Comedy and is definitely for kids, teens, and adults as well. Sure it may get cheesy at times, but hey does every show have the same idea? Yes, but this however is even better than the kind of show that had the idea. They made have funny and crazy character names (Donkeylips, Sponge, Ug etc.) but at least is gets even funnier than ever. But as far as this goes, you can tell it never jumped the shark but hey you can even see a shark floating on a lake for crying out loud. Nickelodeon is the kind of network that brought us funny shows with a weird title and a crazy characters names because that's how the network really is especially on game show and cartoons but this is truly one of the best shows on the history of Nickelodeon and Salute Your Shorts is one of them.
Alright... this goes under Hair Care for Bobby Budnick's badass mullett. I love it! haha SEXY! THe show was the **** and I have NO idea why the hell it went off air because the **** they show today doesnt compare to the funny-as-hell stuff they showed on Salute Your Shorts. Nickelodeon shows are crap today. They need to show that old stuff like Legends of the Hidden Temple and Hey, Dude because those shows were the BOMB!
This is show is truly classic Nickelodeon at its best. One of my favorite memories is coming home from a great day at day camp, and being fascinated over the adventures of Ug, Dina, ZZ, Telly, Donkey Lips, Sponge, Mike, Pinske, and of course, Bobby Budnick. I went to sleepaway camp later on, and I can tell you that I never had as much fun as they did. I remember them winning radio contests, playing Capturing the Flag, sneaking to the movies. I feel bad for the Nickelodeon viewers of today. (Sponge Bob, anyone?) Anyone who didn't like this show was either too old, or too serious.
This show was Nickelodeon at its best, it made camp look like a hell hole! I loved all the funny things they did and how they always managed to stick it to Ugh. The show came near the shark's nose when Buddnick started dating Dina, but then it broke off and the show escaped. I don't remember Buddnick losing the mullet, but it probably would have been a bit goofy. Even Pinsky replacing Michael didn't kill the show. I wonder what Dina is doing today, she was one of the hottest women on TV, she probably looks quite hot still.
The show wasn't good, but that's not the point. Used to watch it for DINA! Hot as hell. Even Zizi started to look good towards the end of the show. If she would have canned the "nature freak" **** and actually wore some skimpy shorts and a thong or something, it would have been a big improvement. A great show for my teenage hormones at the time.
I think this is one of those shows that you had to be the right age at the right time to get into. The thing was, it was such a short run, that is a pretty small number of people. Still, I can still mention "Donkylips" and people my age know what I am talking about. You would think the new kid would ruin it, but I thought he was actually less obnoxious than the other guy. And to the person above, what do you mean Zizi started to look good toward the end? Zizi had it going on from day one, or at least she did in my young eyes.
I can't believe all the negative feedback Salute Your Shorts is receiving. (1) The acting, contrary to opinion, wasn't all that bad. I feel like I need to remind you that the majority of the cast were not even old enough for a driver's permit. (2) Dina. Sweet mother of DAMN! Dina. I feel especially Michael Jackson-ish for having a thing for her (in my defense, though, it's not with little boys and I was about 11 when Salute your shorts first aired). (3) This show represents a time in Nickelodeon history worthy of remembrance. Shows like 'Hey Dude', 'Clarissa', 'Are you afraid of the dark'...even as far back at 'You can't do that on television' did the job of making us feel like kids. I can't say the same about the nonsense littering the airwaves nowadays. Spongebob? Surely ye jest...
salute your shorts was gold. i agree with the person who said "This was a cool show. It was a lot better than the crap Nickelodeon shows now." right on. the writers who were working at nick back in the late 80's/early 90's were friggin' geniuses. it was sad when the 1st season ended with michaels departure (remember he left because that bully was trying to kill him?) and did anybody know that the legendary BEN STEIN did the voice for Dr. kahn? RAWK. surprisingly it didnt jump the shark when the new kid arrived (the kid from boy meets world). a stellar cast, IMO. the acting was great. i wouldve given anything in the world at the time to have went to summer camp at camp awnawanna. to those of you who have said this show sucked to you all i say: YOU HAVE NO TASTE IN TELEVISON PROGRAMMING. and you must've not been kids in the late 80's/90's. the early 90's DIDNT suck and this show is one reason why.
I will not tolerate any dissing of Salute Your Shorts! OK, I'll tolerate it, but I'll sure as hell not like it lol. Seriously, this show was must-see TV for me in the early-90s, and stands as one of Nickelodeon's best shows, other than You Can't Do That on Television (granted YCDTOTV was Canadian, but it still was on Nick), and damn the bad writing. Even though I haven't seen an ep. in at least 10 years, I'm pretty sure SYS is still miles above and beyond anything on TV now (Nickelodeon or otherwise). Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our heart...
Having never been to camp, Salute Your Shorts only made me want to go more. Capture the flag, pretending to be sick and getting to eat lots of ice cream, sneaking out of camp to go to the movies with girls, Salute Your Shorts had it all. Pinsky was a total bad ass. Now he plays drums for Rilo Kiley and has his own solo album out.
I loved this show, but I especially loved to fantasize about Danny Cooksey...all you have to do is imagine him *without* the mullet...who wouldn't wanna get plowed by his red rocket? DAMN i'm feeling kinda hot...

I always thought that Salute Your Shorts "boned..." when Michael (the most "normal"/relatable person on the show) left and was replaced by Pinksy.
