Question Soap Boned the Fish When...

http://www.bonethefish.com/viewtopics.php?1538

Quote:
Soap is an American sitcom that originally ran on ABC from 1977 to 1981. The show was created as a parody of daytime soap operas, presented as a weekly half-hour long primetime comedy. Like a soap opera, the show's story was presented in a serial format and included melodramatic plot elements such as amnesia, alien abduction, demonic possession, murder, and kidnapping.

I voted for the last season. The storylines just kept getting weirder and less interesting. Jessica dying and coming back was the final straw. It also didn't help that Diana Canova left the show so she could prove that she was A Big Girl Now with Danny Thomas.

Never boned, the only episode I didn't like was the last one which never got resolved.

I don't think it ever JTS. It should have had a chance to resolve all of it's stories though. The ending was awful.

Default The last season

The last season was horrible, and the two worst storylines were the dividing of Jessica and Mary with Danny being Chester's son (you don't mess with the cornerstone of a show, which was the two sisters, and how close they were), and Burt's descent into horridness. He became unrecognizable to me with his huge ego. He was not nice to his family, and particularly to Mary. What happened? His character was assassinated in the last season. He went from being my favorite character to someone that I couldn't stand any longer. I have a theory, though. Remember when Burt had a crisis of faith and he visited his old pastor and the pastor died right there on the spot? Maybe the 5th season was to be a "This is Burt's life" type of season. Maybe God or Burt's angel was showing him what COULD happen in his family if he stayed being a sheriff, or if he didn't have faith, or something like that. After the pastor died, things did get wonky, wonkier than usual! The show went from being wonderfully character driven, to just telling storylines, and not caring what happened in the characters' lives.

Since this show was parodying the soap opera format, extreme/weird plotlines are immune to "jump the shark" criticisms as long as the plotlines were well-done & funny.

If you were to ask the average viewer of Soap, they'd have probably said the extra-terrestrial/Rosemary's Baby storylines were too much for them (but not for me).

Never boned. They should have done a series finale.

Interesting! I was also so so disappointed that the series wasn’t resolved. Burt actually didn’t get killed though. The final shot of the show was him about to be ambushed by the thug coming in with the knife.
I actually thought the Burt and Mary storyline of their marriage unraveling to be pretty good drama and rather realistic. They got to a point in their marriage where each of their worst qualities rose to the surface in response to the changes in their lives. I would love to know where the writers were going to take that. I don’t care much about any of the other plot lines, especially not Jessica and that creepy El guy. Chester I would have loved to see die in the gutter. Jodie to actually be with a guy again, Billy, Eunice, Danny, all meh, I guess.

I’m watching now on Antenna and they got to the episode where Mary tells Jodie that he can’t donate a kidney to Danny because they’re “not brothers”. Uh, BS. They are half brothers and they should at least be tested. That whole storyline is weird.

I actually edited my post bc I misunderstood yours but they didn’t update it.

I agree. It was lame that they didn’t just write it in that they tried to test Jody for a match.

I agree TOTALLY about the assassination of Burt's character. Like you, he was always my FAVORITE character and I hate what they did to him. The whole last sesaon was pretty bad in my opinion, but this was definitely the worst.
