Thumbs down Jeanie Garofalo Bombs in her Stand Up Routine And Walks Off The Stage Midway!!!

GAROFALO: The, mostly the media in the States is much more to the right. I mean there is almost no liberal outlet for news commentary or editorializing. …

GAROFALO: Well, I think people like us better now that Obama’s there. It’s a much better representative of the States I think, because George Bush certainly makes it seem like we’re the biggest jerks in the world. And it’s nice to have Obama. But there’s certainly no shortage of still political things to discuss and media things to discuss.

Newsbusters reports that just a few hours later Garofalo walked off stage after failing to win over a UK audience:

Janeane Garofalo cut short her Saturday afternoon set in Latitude’s comedy tent because of the poor reception she was given by the audience. The American comedienne’s rare UK live appearance was expected to be one of the highlights in a strong comic line-up, but she failed to win over the festival crowd.

Best known to TV viewers as talent booker Paula in The Larry Sanders Show and political campaigner Louise in the final series of The West Wing, Garofalo was due perform for half an hour, but left the stage after less than ten minutes when her routine about post-9/11 security checks at airports met with stony silence.

“It’s not you, I blame myself for this,” she said before leaving the stage.

Eek

I've never been a fan of hers (she always comes across as a bully to me) but at least she had the good sense not to blame the audience before walking off.

I've never seen her stand-up act (most stand-up acts annoy me). But I've always enjoyed her guest appearances in sitcoms. From NewsRadio to Ellen, from The King of Queens to Mad About You.

I don't like her at all, but her stint on Seinfeld as Jerry's "would-be wife" was pretty funny. Wow, that's pretty bold; the stuff she was saying about Pres. Bush and Obama. Even I couldn't be that bold, but then again, my personality is about a million miles away from Janeane Garofalo's!!!!

Janeane used to be a pretty funny standup comic. She had a sarcastic snarky edge to her, but since she went political, she comes off as very angry and bitter. Everyone who doesn't agree with her is a radist or hates women. She seems to want to rant about republicans instead of be funny.

That's all well and good if you want to be a pundit, but if you go up on stage and people expect you to tell jokes and you start pushing your political agenda, people might not be so receptive.

That's exactly what I was trying to say in my post - you hit the nail right on the head, Tom. She strikes me as the sort of girl who was always picked on and bullied as a kid, and she always gave off a vibe of self-hatred. That's just my take, anyway.

Default The Unfair Marginalization of Janeane Garofalo

http://splitsider.com/2013/07/the-un...eane-garofalo/

Quote:
Before we start, let me say that I know there are many that will take issue with Janeane Garofalo’s inclusion in this series and understandably so. She is, after all, one of the architects of the so-called “alternative comedy” movement and despite a lower profile compared to her 1990s heyday, still commands quite a bit of respect from the comedy community and continues to perform throughout the country as well as appear in film and television.

However, there are those within the comedy community who, to this day, take issue with Garofalo’s reliance on notes on stage, not to mention the many people who abandoned her idiosyncratic style of comedy during her foray into the realm of political activism during the George W. Bush administration. Sprinkle in a healthy dose of lazy sexism and you have a comedian who, despite being instrumental in practically re-inventing the form of standup comedy, receives little of the accolades that she deserves.

There is no joy in Janeane's comedy. She's so angry that I can't identify with her. Yes, I get angry, too, but I don't stay in that mode 24/7 as she seems to. She never seems to be enjoying herself during her performances, or in general, to be honest. She seems like a miserable person, albeit intelligent. And she refuses to see anyone who disagrees with her as a human being. They're just targets for her rage. I find that very immature, no matter what your political stripe.
