With The White Shadow, I've only watched the first two episodes so far. I'm taking my time with it. I watched the pilot twice, listened to the commentary the second time through.

The interior of the box set and the booklet are very nice on the Different World DVD. There's a letter from Debbie Allen on the first page of the booklet talking about the show. Funny they had her do a letter for Season 1 since she didn't start producing the show until Season 2. Aside from being syndicated prints, the picture and sound is very good also. I was surprised it was only $24.99, I figured it would be over $30 like the Cosby Show set was.

Sounds like they made a nice package to make up for that bad cover. That first season for me was nothing compared to all the rest, and because they're also syndicated episodes, I can wait on this one.

I went over to Target before I left work today. They had two copies of Shadow left on the shelf. I didn't see Fame anywhere, it was there last week but I don't know if they saved a space for it now that it's in its second week. I was tempted to get ADW seeing it was only $24.99 plus you'd get the $5 back, but I didn't.

No one's made any mention of it, but ADW featured a good bit of R&B music, mostly playing in the background at the Pit. I noticed while watching some of the DVD, that all the original music seems to be intact. I first noticed it when I heard a Supremes song playing during the first episode when Denise & Dwayne are dancing at the Pit. I would have figured Urbanworks (being a smaller company) would have edited out all the music, but I was pleasantly surprised Now, if only Anchor Bay would have paid for music rights on the 21 Jump Street sets. . . .

So Are There Any Edits On The DVD?

Someone had posted before this board was created that TWS had one episode that was cut on the Season 1 DVD. Do you know which one it is?

Here are the episode lengths. I'm missing Here's Mud in Your Eye at the moment, but I know that one's in the 48 minute range. So clearly The Offer is noticeably shorter than all the rest, but I couldn't tell you what specifically is missing from that episode on the dvd. It's been too long since I originally watched to remember.

Disc 1 Side 1:
Pilot (48:19)
Here's Mud in Your Eye

Disc 1 Side 2:
The Offer (43:41)
Bonus Baby (48:10)

Disc 2 Side 1:
Pregnant Pause (48:12)
Wanna Bet? (48:14)

Disc 2 Side 2:
That Old Gang of Mine (48:15)
Just One of the Boys (48:14)

Disc 3 Side 1:
Airball (48:13)
We're in the Money (48:15)

Disc 3 Side 2:
Spare the Rod (48:17)
The Great White Dope (48:16)

Disc 4 Side 1:
Mainstream (48:13)
Little Orphan Abner (48:15)

Disc 4 Side 2:
LeGrand Finale (48:16)

Yea,

I checked this other forum with a thread about TWS, and it seems that Season 1, Episode 3 ("The Offer") is cut by about 4 and a half minutes. Possible exolanations are given here:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...e+White+Shadow

Maybe someone could contact Fox to request an offical explanation. If enough people complain perhaps they could search for the missing footage and reissue the Season 1 DVD. (I head that Paramount did this with I Love Lucy on a few episodes of Season 4. There are also some very minor edits on Season 4 of The Brady Bunch DVD as well.)

The White Shadow had a fine and at times almost cult following of fans! There really are so many good things to say about this series.

Interesting tidbit about "That Old Gang of Mine": Lisle Wilson, who was a guest star as the teacher Mr. Finniman, played Leonard on That's My Mama, which in its 2nd season featured Joan Pringle (Sybil Buchanan) as his wife

With regard to "The Offer":

POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW (But Needed to Explain What I Believe Was Cut.)

I watched "The Offer" last night on DVD and even before I got into it, I could tell it was a syndicated print. It looks very good, but not as sharp as the other episodes where they appear to be taken directly from the original masters. The Offer has a scene when Coach Reeves and the reporter are having dinner where you can see the color quickley fade out in some shots, as if the episode had been colorized and remastered from a syndicated showing and not the original tape.

Although I don't have the original tape, it appears that the cut of about 4 minutes occurs around the time that the team is PO'd at Reeves because Gomez makes a call from a police station. (He gets picked up for Shoplifting) but after contacting Reeves, the coach is busy getting ready for an interview with the reporter and apoligizes to Gomez that he is busy and abruptly hangs up on him. Gomez never gets to tell what happens to him in the call to Reeves. (This is included.)

We than have the coach question the team who give him the silent treatment because they hear from the grapvine that Gomez is in jail. His probation officer, Ms. Bucannon, everyone is questioning Reeves about Gomez. Suddenly Gomez, is shown playing a basketball game as if nothing had happened! I would assume that Reeves goes to the jailhouse to help bail Gomez out and there is probably more dialogue about Reeves telling the reporter that he doesn't want to be a sports commentator, but wants to stay at Carver to help the kids. (All of this could EASILY fill up four minutes of time and would be CRITICAL to understanding the story!) It is so obvious that there should be more dialogue with Reeves and Gomez that we don't see. This was A LOT more than oversight.

Yep, THE OFFER on the season one DVD is a cut episode. Fox is usually good at putting uncut shows on their DVD's, wonder what happened here? Perhaps they couldn't locate an uncut print of the episode?

I think the part that's cut from THE OFFER may be where the team finds out Gomez got arrested and coach Reeves blew Gomez off when he received the phone call. In chapter 10, we see the team practicing in the gym, then we see Reeves walk in and the team is pissed at him. So something in between there seems to be missing, and that's where I figure the edit in the episode likely comes in. There should be a scene with the team talking among themselves what happened with Gomez prior to coach Reeves walking into the gym.

Too bad this episode is cut on the DVD. Fox is usually pretty good about uncut episodes. Either someone screwed up or perhaps they couldn't locate an uncut print of the episode.
