i agree that ABC seems to be doing the wrong thing with their schedule, instead of picking up sitcoms that have tested well and could be successful. And they canceled some of their most popular sitcoms in favor of ones that aren't doing so well (Less Tha Perfect). I think this strategy will come back to bite them in the ass. None of the new dramas will do well and ABC will have nothing to air. Since they haven't launched a successful new drama since "Alias" you would think they would concentrate mopre on their comedy blocks Oh well at least we don't have Milloneer 7 times a week.

ABC really has no idea how to treat their long running shows. "NYPD Blue" should have wrapped things up by now, instead they're letting it slowly peter out.

Look at what they did to "Drew Carey."

Actually NYPD Blue is ending next season and they are going to get a big send off. Also ABC did give Roseanne and Home Improvement big send offs, the reason they don't match the hype over Firends and Frasier is simply because FRIENDS and FRAISER always were much bigger shows than either HI or Roseanne. Friends was the # 1 rated sitcom in the WORLD and Fraiser televisions most honored comedy, also at one point a # 1 show. Roseanne and Home Improvement were top ten hits, but NEVER # 1 shows. Comparing them is like comparing Apples and Fig Newtons, they aren't even in the same league.

Home Improvement and Roseanne were both #1 at one point. Roseanne was tied with Cosby Show at #1 in it's first two seasons (some stats place it at #2 in the 88-89 season, and #1 in the 89-90 season, and other stats reverse it) and Home Improvement was the #1 series in the 93-94 season (some stats say #2 tho, it was tied with 60 Minutes much like Roseanne was with Cosby, so it depends on the source, some say #1, some say #2). Roseanne was widely recognized as the show that put ABC back on the map, and was the first sitcom to really challenge Cosby's audience. It didn't fall out of the top 5 until the 7th season. Yes, Roseanne fell off in the last 3 seasons, but the show was massive, and was #1 in the weekly ratings MANY times in the first 2 seasons. The first series to come along and actually rival Cosby in popularity.

Frasier's peak was #3 in 98-99.

BTW, how are their soaps doing against NBC and CBS? I remember when General Hospital was THE soap. Heck, when Luke and Laura got married, it was on the same level as when Lucy had her baby or when JR got shot. It was hard to avoid it.
Their shows are in the middle of the ratings. The top soaps of 2004 so far have been CBS' The Young & the Restless (#1 since 1987 or 1988) and NBC's Days of Our Lives. The lowest ranking soaps are also on CBS and NBC -- Guiding Light (#8) and Passions (#9).

General Hospital usually places 3rd or 4th (out of 9 soaps), while All My Children and One Life to Live are generally 5th and 6th. I believe I read somewhere that ABC Daytime was one of the few departments in ABC to make a really good profit last year.

Actually Days Of Our Live (NBC) and Young and The Resltess (CBS) usually share the number 1 spot. General Hospital is usually # 3. Guiding Light (CBS) and One Life To Live (ABC) is usally 7 or 8, Passions (NBC) is ALWAYS last, # 9 out of 9. All My Children and As The World turns is usually somehwere in the middle 4 or 5 at a high, 6 or 7 at the lowest. Bold and The Beautiful is always floating, sometimes high, sometimes low.Although i've never seen it get higher than number 4. But Young and The Resltess is consistantly getting the highest year-end numbers, it has been for sometime.

Are you talking about the HH numbers or the demos? I was talking about the HH numbers in my previous post, which Y&R is always #1 in (well since the late '80s). B&B was usually #2 in the HH numbers last year until DAYS started beating it earlier this year.

A ratings archive for soaps that goes back a few months is located here http://www.soapoperanetwork.com/boar...act=SF&s=&f=12 if anyone's interested.

I meant Demos. GH, Y&R and DOOL consistantly rotate the top spot. One week its Y&R then its DOOL and sometimes GH.

I'm going back to this becuase of what was discusssed in the Oxygen lineup thread.

Actually Roseanne was #1 during the 1988-1989 season then again in the 1992-1993 season. Home Improvement was #1 during the 1993-1994 season. And Mr. Genius, Frasier was NEVER a #1 show, the highest it got to was #3. When NBC put Frasier up against ABC's Home Improvement, HI more than blew Frasier out of the water. I say this being a bigger Frasier fan.

Also at its peak, Roseanne attracted a much higher rating than Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, or Home Improvement.

Roseanne spent most of it's run in the top 10. Neither Seinfeld or Frasier did...
Friends spent its entire run in the top 10, but never peaked as high in the ratings as Roseanne did.

You sure do deserve an award for your vast knowledge of the Nielsen ratings....

Wow, how times have changed. ABC has found new life, while NBC is struggling to stay afloat.

With ABC on the ropes, its ratings stuck in fourth place (behind FOX!), and a massive amount of cancellations at the end of the 2003-04 season, the obvious question remains - what do we do with the network and its affiliates?

First there was Fox, then the WB....now, the newest independant network, The TURTLE CHANNEL!!!

I know. . . maybe we should rename this thread "Possible Uses For NBC."

Let's see what NBC has been doing wrong. . . . Oh, right -everything! No hit sitcoms since 1997 (unless you count "Scrubs," which is questionable), "Friends" and "Frasier" long since gone, only four sitcoms this past season, one of which was a new show that tanked big time ("Father of the Pride"), and "Ed" ditched for dumb dramas that went to one-season wonderland.

This is worse than the bad old days of the Fred Silverman era.

NBC is brain dead IMO. The only shows people watch on that channel that doesn't have the words "Law and Order" in the title is, oh screw it, I can't think of any. I mean, one week Dateline got two million more viewers than Joey, and Joey wasn't a repeat! That's how bad NBC is. Can NBC come back from the dead? Looking at the fall schedule, there's a better chance UPN will become the #3 network than that happening.
