Driving home, Nate kept glancing over at CD, making sure she was
really still there beside him.

“Nate, what are you looking at?” She grinned and asked him.

“Nothing, just making sure my gorgeous partner is still right beside
me,” he replied.

She smiled. “I’m still here, baby, and I’ll be here forever.”

He smiled. “You better be!” he exclaimed and took her back to his
house.

They walked inside, hand and hand, and CD looked at him as soon as
they got in. “Nate, I, um, don’t have anything here,” she replied.

“Anything, like clothes and stuff?” he asked her. “Don’t worry, you can
wear mine for the rest of the night, and I’ll go get you your stuff in the
morning.”

She blushed. “I needed some other things, though. I’ll go get them,”
she announced.

He shook his head. “No, you’re not going anywhere for the rest of the
night,” he told her. “Whatever it is, CD, I’ll get it for ya,” he promised
her. “It can’t be THAT bad.

She blushed and shook her head. “I need, uh, well, the perp took
everything out of my purse, which I left at the scene, and so now I
don’t have anything. And tomorrow I start,” she murmured,
embarrassed as hell.

“Start what?” he asked her, completely confused.

CD rolled her eyes. “Never mind, just let me go out; I’ll be back in 10
minutes.”

“CD, I promised you I wouldn’t get mad at you for the rest of your life,
and I’m trying my hardest not to, but I WANT to go get you whatever
you need! So tell me!”

“Tampons, alright!” she shouted. “I need tampons for the morning!”

He laughed. “Is that it?! I thought you were going to say something like
Amodium AD or that women’s cream!”

She smiled. “But you’re not embarrassed if I say tampons?” she asked
him.

He shook his head. “Of course not! My mom forced me to go to the
store for her all the time! I got over THAT embarrassment years ago!
But you’d have to be in DIRE need if I had to get you that itch stuff or
diarrhea medicine!”

She giggled. “Okay, note to self, if I ever have the runs, don’t turn to
you? Or if I ever need to scratch uncontrollably?”

“Come to me, and I’ll take care of it without that other stuff,” he teased
her.

She laughed. “You’re a dork,” she replied and yawned.

He shushed her with a kiss. “I want to, CD,” he replied and walked to the door. “And for you I’d even get that other stuff,” he admitted. “But ONLY for you,” he stated and walked out the door.

She grinned from ear to ear. “My hero,” she replied and walked to his bathroom.

When she got in there, she’d looked around and opened the cabinet door to get out a towel and washcloth. She stood back up and looked in the mirror at herself. She shuddered at the sight of her matted hair and sweaty dirt face, but then she smiled immensely when she saw the corner of his mirror. He had stuck a picture of the two of them on it; the picture where the they were sitting on a desk together, laughing over a magazine. It was one of her favorite pictures of the two of them because they looked so happy together, and she’d wondered where it had went to.

She kissed the picture, saying, “I love you, Nathan Basso,” and hopped into his bathtub to cleanse herself with the same things he’d used on his body just a few nights before.


She laid in the cool water, wiping the sweat and make up from her
face, as her stomach growled. “I hope he’ll make me something when he gets back,” CD mumbled.

She sat there until she heard a door close. She could hear Nate
walking to the bathroom.

Nate knocked and opened the door with a hand over his eyes. “Can I come in?”

CD grinned. “Of course you can, I’m covered,” she lied.

He revealed his eyes as they widened. “Um, Miss DeLorenzo, I believe you just fibbed to me.”

CD grinned. “Of course you can, I’m covered,” she lied.

He laughed and had a seat on the edge of the tub. “Feel better?”

She nodded. “MUCH better,” she grinned. “I’d feel better if you were in
here with me.” She paused. “I DO owe ya a shower and all.”

He smiled. “You sure do!” he exclaimed. “But I don’t want to tonight; I
want you to get some rest, and drink plenty of fluids. You lost a lot of
liquids from your body today,” he commented.

“Who are you?” she teased him. “You sound like Dr. Basso!”

He laughed. “Well, actually, your mom called my cell, and she gave me
a lecture.”

“Why would my mom call you? She doesn’t know what happened!”

Nate grinned. “Mommy Dearest Kate,” he explianed. “She threatened
me that if I didn’t take good care of you, she’d be here to bust a cap on
my ass!”

CD laughed. “Well, you’d deserve it if you didn’t!” she teased him.

He nodded. “Got that right.”

She shook her head. “No, no, you take excellent care of me,” she
replied and looked at the bag he’s brought in with him. “You get what I
needed?”

He nodded and showed her the bag FULL of stuff. “I didn’t know which
kind or what brand to get ya, so I asked a nice lady, and she told me
something about Pearl, so I got every available size it made,” he
explianed the many boxes.

She giggled. “Thank you, you did a fine job!” she announced, grabbing a
towel and standing up. “I’m really hungry; I guess I should go make
something.”

He shook his head. “Of course you’re not!” he exclaimed. “I wouldn’t
have allowed it, and Kate would kill me if she found out!” he paused.
“Besides I picked up some spicy chicken fettucine from Fazoli’s for
ya,” he announced proudly.

She grinned broadly. “With breadsticks?” she asked hopefully.

“Of course!” he exclaimed and handed her some clothes to change
into. “And a strawberry lemon ice!”

“Alright!” she replied as she followed him into the kitchen for supper.

They ate quietly, enjoying each other’s company, and CD replayed her
day in her head over and over.

She shuddered and stood up after she was done eating. “I’m sorry to
just eat and run, but I think I’m going to get some sleep,” she told him.

Nate nodded, completely understanding. “Alright, that’s fine, sweetie.
You need anything else?”

She shook her head no. “Um, can I sleep in your bed?” she asked
nervously. They’d only slept together that one night, so she didn’t know
if she was overstepping any boundaries.

“Uh, of course!” Nate exclaimed. “I wouldn’t have you any other place!”
he told her and paused. “Um, do you want me in there, too?” he asked,
now confused as well.

“YES!” she proclaimed and blushed. “I mean, uh, if you want to.”

He grinned. “I definitely want to,” he promised her. “I’ve got some
things to do around here still, but I’ll be in there soon. I won’t wake you
if you’re already asleep.”

She nodded and went to give him a hug. She held onto him for a long
time. “Thank you for being so strong today, Nate, and thanks for giving
me something to hope for when I got away from him,” she whispered.

She nodded and went to give him a hug. She held onto him for a long
time. “Thank you for being so strong today, Nate, and thanks for giving
me something to hope for when I got away from him,” she whispered.

Nate grinned and kissed her. “Baby, I was the weakest one out there; If
I were in charge today completely, I would’ve had 10 snipers run after
him, kill him, and somehow save you from being hurt, but I don’t think
that would’ve been the best solution.”

She giggled. “No, I think Kate handled it a LITTLE better,” she teased
him and kissed his cheek. “But anyway, goodnight, I love you for
everything, and I’ll see ya in the morning,” she replied, walked away
and gave a little wave over her shoulder as she left him for his bed.

Nate smiled and watched her leave. He sighed, not believing that he
finally had her for himself.

He finished the dishes in the sink, sorted his laundry, and watched the
nighttime news. CD was the 2nd story that night, and he grimaced
when they filmed her coming out of the office and showed her
disheveled body. The news did him in, and he decided it was time to
check on his baby.

Nate went into his bedroom and saw CD on HIS side of the bed, fast
asleep. He grinned, knowing he’d give up anything for that woman,
changed his clothes into his pajamas, and climbed into bed next to her.
CD moved and groaned a little when she felt a body beside her. She
snuggled into him and let him put her arms around her.

Nate kissed her cheek and held her, tightly but lovingly for the rest of
the night.

A few weeks went by, and CD went down her path of recovery. She had
nightmares, however, and her body was still conscious of every
stranger she encountered. She began seeing a therapist once a week,
just to get herself on the right track again. She held onto Nate; he was
her rock and the being that kept her going. Kate and Jinny spent a lot
of time with the two of them, trying to help Nate with her.

CD hadn’t gotten the courage to go out alone. She’d never felt that way
before, so helpless. Even after she was raped, she could still go out
solo, but not this time. She’d actually pulled her gun on a guy when she
was with Nate one day. She thought he was going to hurt her when he
tapped her shoulder, but he’d just tried to tell her that she’d forgotten
her purse on the counter. She cursed and apologized, and Nate looked
after her as she ran back into the restaurant. This wasn’t the same
woman he’d met 2 years ago. She was so different; she was very
distant to everyone but him surprisingly. She confided everything to
him but wouldn’t let any of her female friends help her or her male
friends come within a 2 mile radius.

Three weeks after the incident, CD and Nate were assigned to another case. A man was taking poor or homeless kids, dolling them up, and making them participate in kiddy porn for a small paycheck for them and their family.

“This is the life of Reilly,” CD muttered as she hopped into the
passenger’s side of the car. “Some days I wonder why the hell I stay a cop; all these ****ty cases really piss me off,” she grumbled.

Nate put his arm around her as he drove. “Baby, you got to believe it gets better. You can’t look at the bad things in our jobs.”

“Oh, CHILD pornography, let’s see.....HMM, there’s NO ****ing good things about it!” she shouted.

Nate drove silently and didn’t push her to say anything more. He pulled up to the scene and opened his door to get out.

“Wait,” CD said before she got out as well. “Nate, I’m sorry I jumped down your throat; this isn’t your fault.”

He nodded. “I know, and it’s not a problem,” he reassured her and got out.

CD followed him and walked up the steps of the ancient apartment building. A little girl was on the stoop in her nightgown, crying hysterically. Her long blond hair covered her face and her little shoulders shuddered.

Nate was the first to approach her and bent down in front of her. “Shh, sweetie, it’s okay,” he said, comforting her with a hand on her shoulder.

The little girl felt the hand and looked up to see the male stranger. She screamed out and stood up, preparing to run. “Don’t hurt me, leave me alone!!” she shouted.

CD figured she was one of the victims and knelt by her side. “Honey, it’s alright, he wasn’t going to hurt you,” she promised the little girl.

Big brown eyes looked up at CD. “Who are you?” she asked her
nervously.

CD smiled at her. “My name’s CD, sweetie, what’s yours?”

The little girl grinned and pointed for CD to lean closer. “Bailey,” she whispered into CD’s ear.

“Bailey, huh?” CD smiled. “That’s a beautiful name!”

Bailey grinned bashfully. “I like you,” she commented.

CD grinned. “And I like you,” she replied and looked at the apartment. “Do you live here?”

Bailey nodded.

“Do you know who Jarod Hanner is?” CD asked her.

Bailey nodded again. “He’s bad, you don’t want to talk to him, he’ll hurt you.”

“He will? What will he do to me?”

Bailey shook her head, not telling. “Bad things, CD, stay away from him.”

“I can’t, Bailey, I’m a police officer,” she explained to her and held out her badge. “I’m here to help you, sweetie,” she promised her. “I have to go upstairs now,” she said and held out her hand. “Will you come with me?”

Bailey accepted her hand and said, “Only if you don’t leave me by
myself, CD,” she said nervously.

CD shook her head. “No, sweetie, I won’t,” she guaranteed her as they walked inside. “Where’s your parents at?”

Bailey shrugged. “Mom’s at work, and so is Daddy.”

“Where do they work?” Nate asked her.

“What’s his name?” Bailey whispered into CD’s ear.

CD grinned. “It’s Nate, and you can talk to him, alright? He’s a good guy.”

Bailey nodded and replied, “Daddy sells things to people in little bags, and Mommy leaves late at night in a skirt and comes back in the afternoon. They both make a lot of money.”

“Sounds like a tramp and a drug dealer,” Nate muttered under his
breath and led the way to the apartment.

“Shh, don’t talk right now,” CD told her and glanced at Jarod. “No, Mr. Hanner, we’re here for you,” she replied and flashed her badge. “DeLorenzo and Basso; we’ve had some reports on you and your little business.”

Hanner grinned. “Yes, my business is doing quite well, thank you,” he replied. “The shoe industry isn’t what it was 20 years ago.”

Nate replied, “Not that business, your little business ran out of your apartment.”

He looked at them confused. “I don’t understand; what business?”

“Don’t play dumb with us,” CD sneered. “We’ve had reports about you and a child pornography site in your apartment.”

“WHAT?!” Hanner exclaimed and pointed at Bailey. “What, did that
little bitch tell you that?”

Bailey teared up and buried her head in CD’s shoulder.

“I think you should come downtown with us, Mr. Hanner,” Nate told him.

“I want my lawyer!” he shouted.

“You can call him from the station if you want,” Nate sneered.

“Fine,” he muttered and followed them to the car.

Nate knew Bailey nor CD could sit by him, so he sat in the back by
Hanner.

“You let your bitch drive?” Hanner joked.

Nate could barely hold back from punching him. “I let Inspector
DeLorenzo drive if she wants to, yes,” he replied and looked out the window.

“Must give ya a good **** every now and then huh?”

CD looked into the mirror. “Watch your mouth, there’s a little girl in here!”

Jarod rolled his eyes. “Nothing she ain’t heard before, right Bailey?”

“Probably from you,” CD commented as she pulled into the station.

The four of them walked into the Division.

“Room 1, go there,” Nate commanded him. Hanner went inside, while Kate came over.

“Find a new friend?” Kate asked CD and grinned.

CD smiled and looked at the girl in her arms. “I think we found each other,” she replied.

“We’ve got Hanner in for questioning; this is Bailey, one of our
witnesses,” Nate introduced her. “I’m going to go interview Hanner, and CD?” he raised his eyebrows.

“Will stay out here and talk to our star witness!” she exclaimed and sat Bailey down at her desktop. “Could Jinny help ya with him?”

“I’ll help,” Kate voluteered and held out her hand to Bailey. “I’m Kate, Bailey, it’s nice to meet you.”

Bailey grinned and shook her hand. “Nice to meet you, too.”

Kate and Nate went to the first interrogation room, while CD sat down in her seat and looked up at the little girl.

“So Bailey, are you going to help me make this mean guy stay behind bars?”

Bailey nodded. “I can try, CD. What do I do?”

“Tell me the truth, even if he’s told you not to say anything to
anybody.”

Bailey trusted this woman for some reason. The first person she’d
trusted her entire life. “Okay, CD.”

CD nodded and got out her writing pad. “Have you ever been in Mr. Hanner’s apartment alone?” she asked, and Bailey nodded. “Has he ever touched you or made you do something you haven’t wanted to do?”

Bailey bit her bottom lip and shook her head no.

“Sweetie, don’t lie to me,” CD coaxed. “Tell me everything, and I can get you away from him.”

Bailey nodded. “He....he touched me before,” she whispered.

“Where at?” CD asked her gently.

Big alligator tears sprung to Bailey’s eyes. She scooted to the end of CD’s desk and cupped her hand around CD’s ear and told her what he’d done to her.

CD shut her eyes for a second, not wanting to comprehend how this little girl had already gone through so much pain in her life. CD knew she was embarrassed, so she said softly back into her ear, “Honey, were you the only one?”

Bailey shook her head. “He made my friend Bobby do it, too.”

“Get undressed?”

Bailey nodded. “And get into Jarod’s bed with me while he taped it.”

“What did Mr. Hanner make Bobby do to you?”

“Touch me like he did,” Bailey started to cry. “Am I in trouble, CD? He told me if I told....”

CD shook her head and hugged her. “Sweetie, you’re in no trouble whatsoever. You did NOTHING wrong.”

Bailey nodded. “What’s going to happen to me?”

CD sighed. “Honey, you can’t go back to your mommy and daddy. They have problems. What I’m going to do now is take you downtown to a place where you can play with people your age and get some food and rest. How does that sound?”

“Will you stay with me?” Bailey asked hopefully.

As much as it hurt her, CD shook her head no. “I’m sorry, I can’t, but I promise Nate and I will come see you tomorrow and talk with you.”

“I don’t want you to leave me,” Bailey whispered and started bawling.

“Shh, baby, don’t cry,” CD replied, stood up, and picked her up.

Raina looked over with a ‘you alright?’ look.

CD nodded. “Tell Nate I’ll be back, and call me if he needs me.”

Raina nodded.

CD walked outside and put Bailey into the car. She got in and started driving. Bailey cried silently out the window.

“Bailey, I’m so sorry, but I can’t be with you at all times,” she told her as she stopped at the Dairy Barn’s drive thru for some ice cream. She ordered and handed Bailey a big cone.

“Thank you,” Bailey said sadly.

CD nodded and they arrived at the Child Welfare Service building. CD got out and held Bailey’s hand all the way in. She had her sit in a little chair while she talked to the woman in charge, explaining the situation.

The woman was very polite and helped CD get Bailey situated. Bailey sat on her little bed, not wanting to go play.

“Bailey, I’ll be back first thing tomorrow morning, okay?” CD promised her. “Nate and I will take you out for breakfast.”

Bailey nodded and gave CD a hug. “Okay, I’ll be ready to go.”

CD nodded and walked out the door, not turning back for the little girl to see the tears running down her face.

CD got back to the Division, and Nate was at his desk.

“We got the bastard!” he exclaimed as she came in and hugged her. “Kate got him to confess!”

“That’s great,” CD mumbled. “See what it does for that little girl I just made into the city’s next project.”

“CD, come on, Bailey will find a great home now. She deserves it.”

“She DOES deserve it,” CD muttered and sat down to finish Bailey’s report.

That night CD went to bed a little after nine, and Nate followed her shortly after, wondering why she was there already.

“Ya that tired?” he asked her.

“Yeah,” she grumbled and turned over.

“Honey, why are you mad at me?” he asked her.

CD sighed. “I’m not mad at you, Nate, I’m mad at every man on this planet for all of the other Baileys out there!” she exclaimed angrily. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore, so please leave it be, and
goodnight,” she said and turned off the light.

“Night,” he replied sadly and went to bed.

Bright and early the next morning, CD and Nate went to get Bailey. CD went right in to the woman she’d talk to yesterday.

“Oh, FINALLY!” the woman exclaimed.

“What?” CD asked worriedly.

The woman replied sadly, “Bailey’s been crying all night. She won’t let anyone near her.”

“Oh my gosh,” CD mumbled. “Did anything happen to her?”

The woman shook her head. “No, she hasn’t came near anyone,” the woman paused. “Your first name’s CD, isn’t it, Inspector?”

She nodded.

The woman grinned. “The only person she wants is you, ma’am.”

CD smiled and ran to the room where Bailey was staying in.

She was sitting on her bed with her back to CD and her knees were pulled tightly up to her chin.

“Bailey,” CD said and waited for her to look up.

She did and turned around, recognizing the voice. “Ccccccccccccc
Ddddddddddddddd!!” she shouted and ran to her as fast as she could.

She did and turned around, recognizing the voice. “Ccccccccccccc
Ddddddddddddddd!!” she shouted and ran to her as fast as she could.

CD bent down to her and picked her up. “Good morning, beautiful,” CD commented. “And how are you this morning?”

“Bad,” Bailey admitted. “Please, CD, don’t ever leave me in here again,” she pleaded. “Can I stay with you?” she asked her.

CD looked at Nate and back at Bailey. “Honey, let’s go get breakfast, and then we can talk.”

Bailey nodded and put her arms around CD’s neck.

Nate pulled into an IHOP and took his girls in. CD helped Bailey with the kids’ menu, and she decided on chocolate chip pancakes.

“Sounds great!” Nate commented. “I want some, too!” he exclaimed. “Those and bacon and eggs and sausage and maybe some ham........”

“Nate!” Bailey exclaimed. “That’s too much food! You’ll get a
bellyache!” she pointed out to him.

Nate grinned and nodded. “You’re too smart, little girl!” he exclaimed and she grinned. “How old are you, anyway, Bailey?”

Bailey held up four fingers and a part of her thumb. “I’m four and a half,” she announced.

“Whoa, you’re almost as old as Nate!” CD teased her.

Bailey shook her head. “Nuh uh, I’m not THAT old!” she said.

“Hey!” Nate pretended to act offended, and Bailey laughed hysterically.

They finished breakfast and went to the division to talk about what to do for Bailey.

When they got through the door, CD asked her if she’d mind sitting with Nate for a bit. “I have to talk to my boss,” CD explained to her.

Bailey nodded and opened her arms for Nate to take her.

He slung her over his shoulders. “Bailey and I are off to get a candy bar,” he announced.

“Nate, you just had breakfast!”

“We still want candy!” they both announced at the same time, causing Bailey to giggle uncontrollably.

CD shook her head, grinning and went into Kate’s office.

“Good morning, Inspector, anything I can do for you?” Kate asked.

CD grinned. “Where do you want to start?”

Kate smiled. “Whoa, you must need one hell of a favor!”

CD nodded. “I want Bailey,” she simply stated.

Kate looked confused. “You want Bailey......as a witness to your case? To get a good home? To go back with her parents?”

Kate looked at CD, wide-eyed. “Um, that’s a little extreme given the fact that you’ve known this little girl for less than 24 hours!”

CD shrugged. “I don’t care how long I’ve known her. Fact of the matter is that I love her, and I never thought I could love someone so much after everything that has happened in my life, but then I fell in love with Nate,” she paused. “And now I fell in love with a girl who I want as my daughter.”

Kate grinned. “CD, you’re going to have to go through some major
channels and red tape to get her, do you realize that?”

CD nodded. “I’ll do anything to keep her.”

Kate shrugged. “Then I can’t do anything to stop you,” she paused. “The only thing I can do is call every contact I know and put in a good word for you.”

CD smiled. “Thanks, Cap,” she replied. “and I talked to the woman in charge of social services, and she told me I could keep Bailey tonight, since I’m a cop of the city, and she’s my key witness. Even if I can’t keep her forever, I’ll at least have her for tonight.”

Kate nodded. “That’s sounds great, CD,” she stopped. “What does Nate have to say about all of this?”

CD shrugged. “I don’t know yet, Kate, I, uh, haven’t asked him.”

“CD!” Kate exclaimed. “He’s a major factor in your life now; you have to include him in on these things.” she paused and muttered to herself. “BOTH of you need to start talking to each other.”

CD grinned. “I know, I was going to ask him today,” she admitted and saw the two of them coming back in with their candy and sitting at Nate’s desk. “Um, Cap, could you watch Bailey while Nate and I go present our case to the DA?”

Kate smiled. “I KNEW there was another reason you came in here!” she teased her. “And yes, of course she can stay with me, but what about her parents?”

CD sighed. “I notified them last night, and they agreed to sign her away from them; they blamed insufficient funds for the lack of supporting her,” CD mumbled.

Kate nodded. “Yeah, there’s people like that everywhere, CD.”

“Yeah, sure is,” she replied and stood to leave the office. “Thanks, Cap, I’ll go tell Bailey you’re expecting her.”

Nate was teaching Bailey how to make a paper airplane, and Jinny was talking to the two of them.

Bailey was the first to notice CD. “Hi, CD!” she exclaimed. “Guess whatyour friend Jinny just said!”

CD grinned and looked quizzically at Jin. “What did my friend Jinny
say?”

“That I look like I should be your daughter” Bailey exclaimed.

Jinny blushed. “Uh, actually, I said that she looked like she had Nate’s eyes and your hair, so I was just, uh, teasing her....” Jinny mumbled and left Nate’s desk.

CD shook her head, and Bailey grinned. “Now what are we doing, CD?” she asked her quizzically.

CD grinned and picked her up. “Actually, you’re going to have to stay here while Nate and I go work on your case.”

Bailey bit her lip. “But why? I can stay out in the car and wait for you; I don’t want you to leave me again!” she began to cry.

“Honey, don’t cry,” CD soothingly responded. “You’re staying here at the Division with, Kate. You remember Kate, right?”

Bailey nodded.

“Okay, you’ll stay with her, Nate and I will hurry, and then we’ll come back here.”

“And you’ll take me home with you?” she asked hopefully.

CD shook her head. “No, Nate and I have to come back here and work, but you can sit with us alright?”

“Alright,” Bailey agreed disheartedly and let CD take her into Kate’s office.

Nate brought up the subject of Bailey first once they got to the car. “CD, she’s getting too attached to you,” he commented.

CD nodded. “I know, and there’s something I’d like to ask you.”

“CD, you can’t be serious!” he exclaimed, knowing exactly what she was going to say. “You can’t want to keep her!”

“Yes, I can,” CD whispered and looked at him. “Nate, I want her. I want to have her as my own child.”

Nate sighed. “CD, this is a big responsibility to take on so quickly, and in your condition, I don’t know.....”

“My ‘condition’ had improved tremendously in the past 24 hours. I see how brave that little girl is, and that makes me not so afraid anymore,” she paused. “You can support me or ridicule me, but either way, I’m doing this.”

Nate nodded. “Where does this leave us?” he asked her.

“Where do you want it to leave us?” she responded. “I mean, if you support me, then you can stay in my life socially. If you think I’m making a big mistake and don’t want anything to do with her, then I’m sorry, but we’ll have to end our relationship.”

“CD, of course I support you!” he exclaimed. “I don’t want our
relationship to be over, and I’d sure as hell love a family with you!” he paused. “I just didn’t know if you were really ready, or if you were just trying to save this girl.”

CD sighed. “It’s a little of both, I suppose,” she grinned and kissed Nate on the cheek when he pulled up to the DA’s office. “But this is right, Nate. This is where my life is supposed to go now.”

He nodded and kissed her strongly on the lips. “Then I’m right there with ya, babe.”

She smiled. “Good,” she stated and they got out of the car. “Hey,
Nate?”

“Huh?”

“So are you still coming over tonight? I will have another roomie, keep in mind.”

“Already?!” he exclaimed. “How’d you get her so quickly?”

“It’s not permanent; social services said I could have her in my custody until the trial’s over. Meanwhile, I’m filling out paperwork, and Kate’s calling in every favor and contact she has to get her for me.”

Nate smiled. “That’s great, CD, but can I ask you a question?”

CD nodded. “What is it?”

Nate sighed. “I don’t want her to just grow up with just a mommy,” he said. “I want her to have a daddy, too,” he paused. “I want her almost as badly as you do, and I talked to Kate this morning to see how I could keep her in my life. I was, uh, going to talk to you, but I was afraid you didn’t want to have a child, so I was going to do it by myse......”

“Nate!” CD exclaimed and hugged him. “Oh my gosh, I didn’t know you felt that way about kids! I figured YOU wouldn’t want her.”

“Of course I want her!” Nate promised. “I think she’s a blessing sent from God for both of us! She’s here to make you better and keep me in tact.”

CD grinned before they entered the office and kissed him again. “I love you so much, Nate.”

He simply nodded and kissed her right back.

After their case was looked over and the DA approved, Nate and CD rushed back to work to be with Bailey. She helped them with their reports by taking scrap paper and creating her own. CD commended her good work, and after their day was over, she turned to Bailey and asked, “So, are you ready to go home?”

Bailey shook her head. “I don’t want to go back there, CD. I want you to stay with me.”

CD grinned. “I’m not going to stay with you, Bailey,” she replied. “YOU are going to stay with ME.”

Bailey’s eyes brightened to their most choclatey brown. “What?!”

CD nodded. “You can stay with me tonight,” she paused. “That is, if you want to.”

Bailey attacked CD’s leg before CD picked her up. “Yes, YES, I want to stay with you!” she exclaimed and looked over at Nate and whispered into CD’s ear, “We can’t leave Nate by himself, CD! He would be sad!”

CD grinned and looked at Nate. “Hey, Nate, this girl here wants to
know if you’d be interested in staying with us tonight!”

Nate went to Bailey and kissed her cheek. “I’d love to stay with the two prettiest girls in San Fransico!”

CD and Bailey laughed, and the three of them left the Division to go shopping for Bailey.

They went to the mall and picked up several outfits, pajamas, some toys, and toiletries that a 4 1/2 year old would need.

Back at CD’s after pizza and a movie, CD made Bailey change into her pajamas and crawl into the guest bed. CD sat on the side of the bed and played with her hair for a little bit. Finally, she stood up and tucked the covers around her tightly. “There ya go, sweetie.”

“Thank you for letting me stay with you, CD,” Bailey praised her.

CD nodded and kissed her forehead. “I hope that they let you stay for more than just tonight, honey,” she replied, already told Bailey of the situation.

Bailey grinned. “Me, too, CD. I hope I can stay forever.”

CD smiled and kissed her again. “Honey, are you sure it’s alright with you if Nate spends the night here, too?”

“Yes, silly!” Bailey exclaimed. “I wuv Nate, too, and he can protect us if he’s here.”

CD grinned and shut off the light. “Okay, sweetie, he’ll stay then. Good night.”

“Night, CD.”

CD walked back into the living room and snuggled up to Nate on the couch.

“She alright?” he asked her, concerned.

CD smiled and nodded. “I’m pretty sure she’s the happiest she’s ever been,” she remarked.

Nate smiled and kissed her. “I’m sure she is, too, with the mommy she has now.”

CD blushed and sat in his lap, kissing him and laid him down on his back. She stroked over his hair and flicked her tongue into his mouth.

Nate immediately responded, almost forgetting what this was like from CD’s recent vow to stay away from him.

She pulled back quickly though. “I’m so sorry, we can’t do this, I don’t know what the hell I was thinking,” she muttered and left his lap to sit beside him. “We’ve got a kid in the house, and she doesn’t need to think that her new family is as whorish as her last one.”

Nate nodded. “I understand, sweetie. You want me to leave?” he
asked, trying to restrain his sadness.

She shook her head. “No, of course not,” she told him but paused. “But, I, uh, don’t think we should sleep together tonight.”

He nodded. “I know, and I agree, we shouldn’t be having sex while....”

CD shook her head. “No, I mean, I don’t think you should sleep in my bed tonight,” she explained to him. “Nate, I’m really sorry, but I don’t want...”

“CD, it’s alright,” he told her. “Baby, I can sleep on the couch, it’s no big deal.”

CD frowned. “It IS a big deal to me. After that night you took me to in that hotel, and then you let me be with you after I was taken hostage, and this is how I repay you?” She shook her head. “No, baby, I’ll sleep out here, and you take my bed.”

“Hell no, CD!” he replied and stood up. “I’m sleeping on your couch tonight, and there’s nothing you can do to make me change my mind,” he replied and picked her up.

“What are you doing?” she asked through a fit of giggles.

He smiled. “I’m taking you to bed,” he announced and conveyed her to her bedroom. He threw her teasingly in bed and then kissed her lips. “Goodnight, baby,” he murmured. “I’ll be thinkin about you out there.”

She pouted. “I’ll be lonely in here all by myself. I haven’t slept by
myself in ages.”

He grinned. “Well, come out and visit me if you get too bored,” he
replied and kissed her once more. “I love you, CD, and I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Night, baby,” she smiled and gave him a quick hug before he went to his place on her couch.

Nate was fast asleep when a little hand rubbed his shoulder awake.

“Huh, what is it?” Nate said as he sat up.

“Nate, it’s me,” Bailey replied. “Bailey Nichols.”

Nate grinned. “What is it, Bailey Nichols?” he teased her and sat her in his lap. “Everything okay?”

Bailey shook her head no. “I want to sleep in CD’s room,” she confided in him. “I’m scared to sleep alone.”

He completely understood. “How bout we go check on CD?” he asked her.

“Can we?” Bailey asked hopefully.

Nate grinned, picked her up and walked into CD’s room. He sat her down and whispered into her ear. “Wake her up gently,” he coaxed her.

Bailey ran to the bed and gently climbed up into it. She crawled around CD’s sleeping body until she was face-to-face with her. Bailey gently kissed the tip of CD’s nose and giggled.

CD stirred but kept sleeping.

Bailey kissed her nose again and said, “CD, wake up,” she whispered.

CD shot up. “Bailey?” she asked. “Honey, what’s wrong?”

Bailey giggled as CD turned on the light. “Nothing’s wrong, silly; I just missed you.”

CD grinned and put her arms around her as she sat her down in her lap. She looked at Nate. “And what are YOU doing in here?” she teased him.

Nate smiled. “I’m just relaying the assailant,” he responded.

CD nodded and turned back to Bailey. “So, you want to sleep in here with me tonight?”

Bailey nodded hungrily. “Yes, please,” she replied and snuggled up to CD. She whispered in CD’s ear, “Can Nate sleep in here with us? I think he’s afraid, too.”

CD smiled. “Ya sure?” she whispered back.

Bailey nodded and smiled happily.

“What are you ladies doing?” Nate teased them.

CD scooted to one side of the bed and put Bailey in the middle. “We want this bed full, and I guess you’re the only one who could fulfill our demands,” she teased him.

“I feel so loved,” he rolled his eyes and looked at CD. “Are you sure....”

“Come on, Nate!” Bailey exclaimed.

CD nodded, so Nate crawled into bed next to them. “Goodnight, my beautiful women,” he replied and kissed Bailey’s head before kissing CD briefly on the lips.

“Goodnight, Nate,” they replied, CD flipped off the light, and the three of them snuggled closely in the bed.

The next morning CD awoke to a foot in her face and arm groping her stomach. She sat up a little to see both of her houseguests fast asleep. She gave Nate back his arm, which caused him to stir a little, and then she laid Bailey’s foot in his face to be mean.

She smiled, got up, and left the room to get her camera. She found it and snapped a couple of pictures before leaving it to make breakfast.

CD was busy scrambling eggs when she heard the thump thump of feet coming her way. She turned around. “Morning, hotstuff,” she teased Nate, who kissed her cheek sleepily. She licked her hand and smoothed down his cowlick.

He grinned and wrapped an arm around her middle. The other one slid down her elbow to her wrist and closed itself around her hand that was busy stirring. “Good morning to you, too, sweetie,” he replied as he began to kiss her neck.

She giggled. “You sure are fiesty this morning, aren’t ya?” she teased him.

He laughed. “I miss you already,” he admitted.

“What’s there to miss?” she teased him. “We haven’t had sex in two weeks anyway, what was one more night?”

“I can’t go much longer before I explode,” he told her and continued sucking on her neck.

“Nate, that tickles,” she responded and turned around to read him the riot act. “Nate, what do you think you’re.....”

He captured her lips before she could finish, and she dropped the
spatula and threw both arms around him.

He picked her up and sat her on the cabinets. He fondled all around in her mouth with his tongue, and she responded and started unbuttoning
his shirt.

Bailey woke up with a start and noticed she was all by herself. That made her run into the kitchen, the closest room to CD’s room, to look
for her friends.

She saw them kissing heavily and groaning, and she giggled. “Ew!” she exclaimed. “What are you doing?!”

CD pulled away quickly and slapped Nate’s shoulder to make him quit as well. “Bailey, honey, good morning!” CD said.

“CD and Nate, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G.....” Bailey started singing.

“Bailey Nichols!” Nate exclaimed. “You better not finish that!”

Bailey giggled. “Okay, Nate, I won’t,” she smiled great big and looked a the skillet. “Ew, CD, what IS that?!”

CD looked at the scorched eggs; the skillet had started smoking and the charred spatula had melted into her masterpiece. “Oh, ****!” CD shouted and grabbed the skillet off the burner as Nate turned it off.

“Well, you get it today!” Nate exclaimed. “What can we make you,

Bailey thought for a second. “I want......OATMEAL!” she told them.

Nate shuddered. “You can have ANYTHING you want, Bailey!”

She nodded. “I know, and I want oatmeal!”

CD laughed. “Okay, three oatmeal’s comin up!”

Nate frowned. “Yuck, I think I’ll just take the eggs!”

Nate shuddered. “You can have ANYTHING you want, Bailey!”

She nodded. “I know, and I want oatmeal!”

CD laughed. “Okay, three oatmeal’s comin up!”

Nate frowned. “Yuck, I think I’ll just take the eggs!”

Bailey and CD laughed.

“You’re gross, Nate!” Bailey commented.

“So are you for wanting OATMEAL!” he exclaimed.

“Oh, ya big baby, I’ll throw some brown sugar in yours, just like mine,”
CD rolled her eyes. “You’ll eat all of it, I’m sure.”

Nate grinned. “And some chocolate?” he looked at her with puppy dog
eyes.

CD shook her head. “Fine,” she muttered and acted mad.

“Me, too?!” Bailey asked.

CD laughed. “Fine, you too,” she replied. “You’re both a bunch of
spoiled brats!”

Bailey giggled and Nate went over to pick her up and sit her on the
counter to watch.

“Can I help?” she asked CD hopefully.

CD grinned and scooted her over by the stove. “Of course you can; you
wanna stir the oats?”

Bailey smiled broadly and took the spoon.

Nate set the table and poured everyone juice, while the women
finished the breakfast and sat it on the table.

“So where do I go today?” Bailey asked while they were eating.

CD smiled. “Nate has the day off; would you mind staying with him, so I
can go to work?”

“Okay!” Bailey exclaimed. “We’ll have a lot of fun!” she said to Nate,
who grinned, but her face turned sad. “But do I have to go back to that
place tonight?”

Nate shook his head. “No, Bailey, not tonight, and hopefully never
again.”

“Good,” she replied. “I didn’t like it.”

CD nodded. “I know, sweetie, so I’m going to talk to child welfare
today, and see what I can do about that.”

Bailey grinned. “Good!” she exclaimed and ate another bite of her
oatmeal. “That would be so cool! You are the best mommy already!”
she excitedly announced and hugged her.

CD smiled and picked her up. “Honey, don’t get too excited, it’s not
final yet,” she explained and kissed her head. “Sorry, sweets, but I
gotta go to work now,” she replied and sat her down. “I’ll be back as
soon as I can.”

Bailey nodded. “Will you call us today?”

Nate agreed. “Yeah, we’re going to miss you soooooo much,” he
smiled.

CD laughed. “Okay, I promise I’ll call while I’m at work today,” she said
and kissed each of them before going out the door.

CD was at her desk doing paperwork when Kate walked out of her
office. “DeLorenzo, nice to see you working this morning,” she teased
her.

CD grinned. “Hey, Cap, it’s nice to see that you haven’t lost your sense
of humor in your old age,” she joked right back.

Kate laughed. “So, anyway, what’s new with Bailey?”

“I have an appointment at noon with child services to present my case;
I talked to the parents again this morning, and they are willing to sign
her over to me,” CD sighed. “I didn’t realize it could be this easy.”

“It’s not done yet, CD,” Kate replied. “Child services can be a bitch
sometimes, so be on your best behavior and be ready for anything.”

She nodded. “Yeah, I’m as ready as I’ll ever be, but I’m gonna finish
this paperwork for you, and then I’ll head over there on my lunch hour.”

“Okay,” Kate touched her shoulder gently. “Good luck, you’ll do fine,
and call me the second you know.”

CD nodded and went back to her paperwork.

At 11:45, CD was headed downtown for her interview and placed a call
on her phone.

“Hello?” Nate asked.

“Hey baby, how’s the hottest man in the world?” CD grinned and asked.

Nate laughed. “I’m VERY well,thank you,” he replied. “I have to admit
to you, though, I’m at the mall with an extremely attractive younger
woman.”

CD grinned. “How is she?”

“See for yourself,” Nate said and handed the phone to Bailey.

“Hi honey!”

“CD!” Bailey shouted gleefully. “Guess what?! Nate took me to the mall
and bought me new Barbies, some cool shoes, and a bike! CD, I got a
pink BIKE!”

CD smiled as her bottom lip quivered at how satisfied the little girl was
over a simple gift. “That’s great, sweetie! I can’t wait to see it!”

“Will you teach me how to ride it?”

“Of course I will!” CD promised her happily as she pulled into the
parking lot. “But I’ve got to go right now, Bailey, can you put Nate back
on the phone?”

“Sure! Bye CD!”

She handed the phone back to Nate. “Yes?” he asked.

“I’m jealous,” she admitted. “Do I get spoil her when I’m done here?”

Nate grinned. “Of course you do,” he replied. “And what about spoiling
me, too?”

CD laughed. “We’ll see,” she said and got out of the car. “I’ll talk to you
soon, honey, I’m at child services.”

“Okay, CD, I love you baby, and good luck.”

“Love you, too, thanks,” she replied and hung up the phone and walked
into the office.

That was so great! I hope CD gets to keep Bailey. So get back here and post more!:D

“Candace DeLorenzo, I have a noon appointment.”

She nodded. “Yes, Mrs. DeLorenzo, you can have a seat in the first office on the left, and Mr. Daniels will be in as soon as he’s done with another client.”

“Thank you,” CD replied and entered the office. She sat nervously
waiting, looking at the posters on the walls and the plaques of his
degrees.

A door opened behind her. “Good afternoon, Mrs. DeLorenzo,” the man said.

CD stuck out her hand. “Hello, Mr. Daniels, how are you?”

“I’m fine, thank you,” he said and looked at her profile. “Um, so we’re talking about the Bailey Nichols case?”

CD nodded. “Yes, Sir, I’d like to adopt her.”

He nodded. “I see that,” he stated and looked at the first line. “Oh, wait, I see it’s actually MISS DeLorenzo?”

“Um, yes,is that a problem?” she asked nervously.

He shook his head. “Not necessarily, we usually prefer to give a child to a family though.”

“Oh, well, actually I’m engaged!” CD lied. “No, I don’t have a ring yet, but I’m gettting married soon!”

“Oh, well, we’re going to have to see a profile on him, too,” he replied. “Name?”

“Nathan Basso.”

Mr. Daniels picked up the phone. “Yes, Diane, please bring me the file on a Nathan Basso please; thanks.”

“We’re both Inspectors at the Felony Division downtown...”

“That’s nice, Miss DeLorenzo, where will Bailey go while the two of you are working?”

“I’ll hire a baby-sitter,” CD replied matter of factly. “Like a lot of
working families do.”

The secretary came in and brought Nate’s papers. “Thanks,” he
murmured and glanced through them.

“Mr. Daniels, I can guarantee you that Bailey will be in the greatest of care if I have custody of her. My fiancee will sign with me, he already said he would. He, too, wants Bailey very much.”

Daniels frowned at Nate’s papers. “This Basso character...... he’s an ex junkie?!”

CD frowned. “Um, no....”

“Says here he went to a drug rehab for 6 months!” Daniels exclaimed. “Sounds perfect to be a father,” he muttered.

“He had a problem when he was working at Vice, Mr. Daniels. He was in an undercover operation for almost a year, was forced to use drugs to convince everyone else he belonged, and then couldn’t give it up! He hasn’t been anywhere near it for since the day he got out of the recovery program!”

“Anyone with a record like this has to be picked over with a fine
toothed comb, ma’am,” Daniels replied. “I don’t know if Bailey Nichols should be exposed to this kind of situation.”

“There ISN’T a situation!” CD pleaded. “Please, Mr. Daniels, you have to believe me.”

He sighed. “Miss DeLorenzo, I actually do believe you, but I can’t trust anyone’s word when it comes to placing a child with a family for the rest of her life! I’m going to need references and check outs.....”

“Fine, I’ll get you anything you want,” she promised. “We could even have routine check ins at our house, so you can see Bailey’s getting the attention she needs.”

“We have those anyway, ma’am,” Daniels replied and sighed. “Moving on, you live in an apartment?”

She nodded. “Yes, but we could move! We could get a house if you think that’d be better for her.”

“You’d make all these changes just to make me happy?” Daniels asked quizzically.

“No, not for you, Sir,” CD answered truthfully. “I’d do anything to give Bailey the best life I could possibly give her.” she paused. “Oh, and I already talked to her parents, and they would agree to sign her over to me!”

“You’re not the problem,” Daniels said. “Mr. Basso is a thorn in your side, if you ask me. How serious is this engagement?”

CD sighed. “It’s the second most important thing to me in my life at the moment.”

“And what’s first?”

“Getting Bailey Nichols a great home with my husband and me.”

“Well, if Basso is #2, then would you ever consider leaving him for your new daughter?”

CD stared at him blankly. “No, Nate is NOT #2 in my life, our
engagement is 2. I love him more than anything because he’s saved my life so many times, Mr. Daniels. In the past 2 days, I have fallen in love again; this time, with a little four and a half year old that likes the way I make oatmeal and is so thankful because one of her new friends bought her a BARBIE DOLL! She is so appreciative, well behaved, and she loves both Nate and me. I can’t give up Nate, but I don’t think she can either.”

Daniels smiled for the first time. “CD, the next time I meet with you is when you can give it to me. I’ll let Bailey stay with you until further notice because I like ya, and I think you’re doing a lot of great for her. I have a 11:45 appointment for Nate, and a 12:20 for Bailey tomorrow, if you think they can both make it.”

“They will, trust me!” CD exclaimed and stood up. “Thank you so much, Mr. Daniels, and I’ll give these papers to Nate to give you tomorrow.”

Mr. Daniels nodded. “Thank you for meeting with me, CD. If everything checks out, I’m sure we can set ya right up.”

CD grinned and shook his hand. “Thank you, thank you!” she
exclaimed. “I’ll have Nate and Bailey for bright and early tomorrow.”

The next morning CD was dressing Bailey in a new dress and helping her put pantyhose on.

“CD, I don’t like this,” Bailey whined.

“You have to look good for your interview, sweetie,” CD explained.

“I’m scared, CD,” she whispered back.

CD grinned and picked her up. “You’ll do just fine; just tell Mr. Daniels the truth, okay?”

Bailey nodded, and Nate walked into the room. “Don’t you think a tie is a little much, CD?” he complained as he tried to tie it unsuccessfully.

“Of course it’s not; it’s a must,” she replied and walked over to Nate to assist him.

He sighed and let her finish it. “Thank you,” he muttered and took
Bailey in his arms. “You ready?” he asked her before kissing her
forehead.

She grinned. “Yeah, I’m ready.”

Nate drove them back to Mr. Daniels’s office, and the three of them got out.

“Oh, crap,” CD muttered.

Nate turned to her. “What is it?” he asked nervously.

She grinned uncomfortabley. “Nate, honey, you’re looking great today.”

“What did you do now, CD?”

“Um, if Daniels asks, uh, if you’re going to marry me, then answer yes, we’re engaged,” she stuttered. “I kinda gave him the impression that we were soon to be official.”

“CD!” Nate hissed. “You lied during your interview?!”

“He wanted to give Bailey to a family, so I told him we were going to be.”

He grinned. “You’re something else,” he replied and kissed her cheek.

She nodded. “Yeah, and Nate?” she said and waited for him to raise an eyebrow. “Uh, you might have to talk about your problem.” she paused to make sure Bailey was out of hearing distance. “Your drug problem at Vice.”

“Oh my gosh,” Nate muttered. “That was so long ago, CD! Why did you bring it up?”

“I didn’t! He looked over your file, and it was of course in there!” she seethed back.

He sighed. “Okay, I can handle it, baby,” he replied and smiled. “Trust me.”

CD nodded. “I trust you, Nate,” she told him and called after Bailey.

Bailey ran to CD and grabbed her hand, so the three of them could walk into the building together.

Nate was called back first, so CD kept Bailey busy playing games and talking with her to make her feel comfortable.

Daniels himself came out when Nate was done. “Hello again, CD,” he replied and smiled.

She turned. “Mr. Daniels, hello! It’s great to see you again.”

He smiled. “I’m glad you think that because I need to talk to you
again.”

CD frowned. “Oh, um, alright,” she replied and looked at Bailey.
“Honey, you stay out here with Nate, and teach him the new game I taught you, okay?”

Bailey nodded and Nate gave CD a look of reassurance before she
entered a room with Mr. Daniels.

“Is everything alright?” she asked him worriedly.

Daniels smiled and pointed at the window in the different office he’d taken her to. “Everything is great; I needed to perform my last test.”

CD sat silently but finally answered. “So....the last test is for the two of us to sit her quietly while we watch Nate and Bailey play?”

Daniels laughed. “Kind of,” he replied. “That’s a two sided mirror, CD. They can’t see us; we’re watching Nate to see how he takes care of Bailey while you’re not around.”

CD frowned. “Why are you doing this to only Nate? I mean, you
should’ve done it to me, too! Just because he had a problem YEARS ago....”

Daniels held up his hand. “CD, stop. I DID watch you, while Nate was back here.”

“But wouldn’t Nate realize what you were doing and follow the patterns you want, so we can get Bailey?”

Daniels smiled. “You’re smart, CD; Bailey will be just fine with you,” he paused. “My colleague interviewed Nate while I watched you outside,” he explained and pointed at the window. Nate and Bailey were laughing, and she climbed into his lap with a book. Nate grinned and began reading to her. “You’ve passed, CD.”

“I? We? Her?” CD stuttered.

Daniels grinned again. “I have to go talk to Bailey now, but as long as she wants the two of you, then she’s all yours.”

“REALLY?!” CD exclaimed and hugged him. “Oh my gosh, I can’t
believe it! Thank you, thank you so much, Sir!”

He nodded. “Thank you, CD, for wanting his little girl.”

CD didn’t know what to do, so she simply nodded and walked out with him to the main office.

Bailey looked up. “Hi, CD! Nate’s reading Clifford to me!” she
announced and held up the book.

CD grinned. “That’s great, sweetie,” she replied and kissed the top of her head. “But he’s going to have to pause for a second because now it’s your turn to talk to Mr. Daniels.”

The doctor smiled. “Yes, are you ready to come back and talk to me?”

Bailey nodded nervously.

CD whispered into her ear, “Just remember-- tell him the truth, honey, and you’ll do just fine.”

Bailey grinned wearily and followed Mr. Daniels.

“How did yours go?” Nate asked her.

CD grinned and kissed him quickly on the cheek. “It went so well; all we did was watch the two of you.”

Nate frowned. “You what?”

“We watched you play with Bailey. Daniels wanted to see how you were with her when I wasn’t around. He said you passed with flying colors, and as long as Bailey wants US, then she’s ours.”

Nate grinned broadly. “Really? Wow this is great!”

She nodded and held his hand while they waited.

Ten minutes later Bailey bounced out the door. “HE SAID YES, CD!!!” she exclaimed and jumped into her arms. “I get to live with you two forever!”

Bailey sat silently in the back on the drive to Anchorside for lunch.

CD looked at her in the rearview mirror. “What are you thinking about, back there, Missy?”

Bailey grinned. “I’m thinking about my new family,” she replied.

“Are you scared?” Nate asked.

Bailey giggled and shook her head no. “No, I love you two, so I’m not
scared, but I do have a question.”

“What’s that, sweetie?” CD questioned.

“Do I get to call you Mommy and Daddy now?”

CD smiled and turned to Nate, who was grinning back at her. CD
decided to answer for both of them. “Bailey, that’s your decision. If you’re comfortable calling us that, then we would love to hear it, but if you still want to just call us CD and Nate, then that’s fine, too.”

Bailey nodded and pondered. Finally, she answered, “Okay, Mommy, that sounds great,” she replied and giggled, turning to Nate. “And Daddy, what are you going to get at that Anchor place?”

He smiled and blushed, hearing his new name for the first time. “I don’t know, possibly one of everything.”

Bailey giggled. “D-AD!! We talked about this at breakfast once! You can’t have all that food; it’s bad for you!”

Nate smiled and turned to CD. “Our daughter’s much to smart for me.”

CD laughed and nodded. “Aren’t we all, honey?”

They went to Anchorside after calling all of their Division friends over for a lunch celebration. Kate was the first one there and immediately congratulated the new parents.

“So Bailey, what’s it feel like to be living with these two?” Kate asked the little girl.

Bailey grinned. “I love it, Kate! I have the bestest mommy and daddy in the whole wide world!”

Kate smiled. “You sure do, sweetie!”

CD grinned. “Bailey, what do you want for lunch?”

“Can I have a cheeseburger?” she pleaded. “Or some french fries? A milkshake?”

Nate grinned. “Baby, you can have all three!” he told her.

“I can?” Bailey replied and looked at CD. “My old mom and dad never let me have all three; at dinner, I could only have one thing, and I’ve never been to this place before.”

CD frowned and put her arms around her daughter. “Honey, your whole life is going to be so different from now on. You’re going to have more food, more toys and we’re all going to do more things together as a family.”

Bailey nodded. “Like what?” she asked.

“Like vacations, going to zoo; things like that,” CD told her.

Bailey grinned. “That sounds cool, Mom!”

Kate smiled. “You’re gonna be so spoiled, aren’t ya, Bailey?” she
teased her.

Bailey smiled. “No!” she replied and giggled.

Jin, Raina and Mag walked through the doors then and joined them. They all had lunch together, and Nate helped Bailey finish her meal. After the plates were cleared, Kate had the rest of the inspectors head back to the Division, while she told Nate and CD to take the rest of the day and the next off, so the three of them could get more acquainted with each other, and the parents could discuss and find a reliable baby-sitter for Bailey during working hours.

After stopping at home for a change of clothes, Nate and CD took
Bailey to the park that afternoon and watched as she played with the other kids in the sandbox.

“She looks so happy,” CD commented.

Nate put an arm around her. “Of course she does, CD, she IS happy.”

CD beamed and kissed his cheek. “Nate, I love you so much; you know that, right?”

He smiled. “I know, baby, and I love you too.”

She snuggled close to him as they continued to look on. CD pulled out a number Magda had given them for a baby-sitter and called it on her cell. She talked to Mrs. Harra for awhile, and they both decided to have a trial run starting tomorrow. She sounded nice to CD, and she could assume she was good at her job because Magda only supplied praises for the woman.

CD hung up. “She said she’d start tomorrow, 9 am.”

Nate nodded. “That’s great!” he looked at his watch. “It’s about 4; should we go buy Bailey some new play clothes or something?”

CD agreed and smiled broadly. “Yeah because I haven’t got to spoil her yet.”

He laughed and called out, “Bailey, are you ready to go?”

Bailey looked up and smiled, running to them. “Sure, Naaa......Dad,” she giggled. “Where are we going now? Home?”

CD shook her head. “We need to get you some more play clothes for the baby-sitter’s tomorrow.”

“Baby-sitter’s?” Bailey asked worriedly. “Can’t I just go to work with you? I promise I’ll be good! I won’t even ask for anything; not even a candy bar!”

CD smiled. “Honey, you can’t go with us, but you’ll have so much fun with Mrs. Harra! There will be three other girls there and even a couple of boys for you to play with! I think you’ll have a great time!”

“But I wanna go with you...” Bailey complained.

Nate added, “Bailey, you better not be kissing on those boys tomorrow! I mean it; if I here of any of that, I’ll be right there and arrest him!”

Bailey giggled. “DADDY! I’m too young to be kissing boys!” she
exclaimed and sighed. “And I guess I’ll go tomorrow, but you will come back to get me, right?”

“Of course!” Both parents annouced.

Bailey smiled. “Okay, I’ll try it then,” she paused as CD opened the backseat door for her. “So what are we going to buy me to wear? No more dumb dresses, right?”

CD laughed. “No more dumb dresses, sweetie. At least not for tonight.”

Bailey grinned. “Good,” she replied as she looked out the window as they drove back to the mall.

Later that night Bailey was tucked in her bed in CD’s spare room, and Nate and CD were cuddled in CD’s bed.

CD looked around at the disaster of her room. “Nate, we’re going to have to find something bigger. My small room isn’t big enough for the both of us.”

Nate looked around and laughed at all the big pink boxes. “Baby, that stuff isn’t even mine! I haven’t got to move anything of mine here yet, just some clothes and stuff like that. That’s all what we bought for Bailey the last couple of days!”

CD giggled. “We better slow down a little, huh?”

“A little?!” he teased her. “Let’s just say I’m glad MY name isn’t on your credit card, too!”

She laughed as she kissed his cheek. “True, but you’re going to want your name on the house, right?” she asked him. “You want a house, don’t you?”

He smiled and kissed her briefly on the lips. “More than anything, I
want a house with you,” he told her. “With a big backyard, and at least four bedrooms, and.....”

“Four?” CD questioned him.

Nate grinned devilishly. “For our other kids,” he replied matter of
factly. “And all of their rooms will be close to ours, but far enough
away so they don’t hear any obscence noises,” he winked at her.

He slid his arms around her waist, pulling her close and kissed her ear. “You sure have,” he whispered up against it before biting softly. “Can I take advantage of you right now?”

She giggled and pulled the sheets up over them. “I thought you’d never ask,” she purred back as she slipped off his shirt.

Nate fondled under her shirt for awhile before reaching for the bottom of it.

He was interrupted by a small knock on the door and it immediately opening. “Mom? Dad?” Bailey called out.

Nate let go of CD’s shirt.

“What’s wrong, Bailey?” CD asked.

“Can I sleep in here tonight? I’m scared.”

“Bailey, honey, you’re going to have to get used to sleeping in your own room.”

Bailey nodded. “I know; I promise I will tomorrow, but can I stay in here tonight? I can sleep on the floor if you want me to.”

“You’re not going to sleep on the floor!” Nate told her.

“Go grab your teddy and get back in here,” CD advised her.

“Thank you Mommy!” Bailey exclaimed and ran to her room.

CD kissed Nate softly. “Tomorrow, baby, I promise. Somehow,
somewhere, I promise, I’m all yours.”

Nate laughed. “That janitor’s closet at the Division is looking better and better.”

“I just said somehow, somewhere, so that fits into the description if that’s where you want it,” she whispered to him.

Nate smiled and kissed her quickly. “We’ll just lock the door tomorrow night,” he told her.

Bailey ran back in and climbed into the middle of the bed. Nate put his arm over her and CD, and Bailey put her little arm on CD’s waist, preparing for another family sleepover at the DeLorenzo’s.

Seven years later Bailey Basso held the hand of her younger brother, Ethan, as she walked him to his kindergarten classroom. CD carried little Conner in her arms behind them.

Bailey looked at her mom when they came to an open door. “Mom, this is it,” she pointed at the room for Ethan. “I’m going on to my classroom,” Bailey explained.

CD nodded and kissed her cheek. “Have a great first day, honey.”

Bailey smiled. “I will, Mom. I love you.”

“Love you, too, sweetheart.”

Bailey walked down till the end of the hall and turned to her fifth grade classroom.

CD took over with Ethan’s hand and walked him into his room. The
kindergarten teacher was greeting the new kids at the door.

“Hello!” she exclaimed. “My name is Mrs. Milligan; how are you today?” she asked Ethan.

“Fine,” he said nervously.

CD smiled. “Hi, this is Ethan.”

“Ethan, it’s so good to see you today!” Mrs. Milligan announced and turned to CD. “He’ll be just fine, don’t worry.”

CD grinned and bent down to Ethan. “You’re going to do great today, aren’t you?” she asked him after kissing him.

He smiled. “Moom! Not in public!” he replied, his eyes getting huge with animosity.

“Okay, Mister, NOW you’re gonna get it!”

He laughed. “I’ll be fine, Mommy. I love you!”

“Love you, too, honey. Have a great day!” she said as her and Conner walked out to their Jeep Cherokee. “So are you ready to go to the baby sitter’s now?”

Conner giggled. “Ice cream?”

CD laughed. “Fine, we’ll go get ice cream before we go there, okay?”

Conner grinned and nodded.

CD stopped at a Dairy Queen and Conner and herself some ice cream, dropped him off, and then she picked up her cellphone and dialed.

“Hello?”

CD beamed like a schoolgirl herself. “Hey baby, it’s a go,” she
whispered into her phone.

Nate smiled. “Oh, thank God!” he replied. “So the kids are alright at school? And Conner?”

“Is at the sitter’s until 4:30; we’ve got the whole day,” she told him.

Nate grinned. “It’s a great thing I’m sick and couldn’t go to work
today.”

“It’s a shame, really,” CD commented. “Now we’re BOTH home ALL day by ourselves-- Whatever will we do?”

“I’ll have the bed ready in less than a minute?”

CD laughed. “I’m in the drive-way as we speak.”

Nate jumped up from sitting in the living room to run upstairs to their bedroom. “Alright, I’m on it.”

CD chuckled. “Are we having sex or doing a scene from 007?”

“A little of both, if you want,” Nate replied seductively into the phone. “You can be my Bond girl anyday.”

CD smiled as she opened the front door. “My gosh, I love you so much, even when you’re a huge dork! Have I ever told you?”

“Yes, every night, actually, so get your ass upstairs and prove it to me.”

She hung up her phone laughing and ran up the stairs to their bedroom- a room close to three others, but not close enough for any filthy pillow talk to go through the walls to little ears, just how Nate had predicted. CD walked through their entrance way to find her husband already waiting for her.

“Hey, you!” she exclaimed with a cheesy grin on her face.

“Hey, yourself, get over here!” he patted the bed.

She giggled and threw her coat on the floor, so she could join him. “I wonder if I remember how to do this,” she whispered through rough kisses as she laid down beside him.

Nate ripped at her clothes more hungrily than ever before. “You better
remember or at least pick it up as we go along,” he muttered.

CD laughed. “I’ll make you proud, baby, don’t worry.”

Nate grinned as he stroked over her naked body. “You always do, CD. I love you so much.”

They made love like it was going out of style that day; ALL day, until it was time to pick up the kids at school. Nate and her went together, picked up their three children, and went out to dinner as a family. They came home, Bailey talked about her friends, Ethan told his parents about his four new girlfriends, and Conner wanted more ice cream.

After the kids were in bed, Nate decided he wanted a taste more of what he’d gotten earlier in the day. His wife was more than willing, so before they knew it, they were naked under the covers for the second time that day.

“Mommy?” Conner’s voice screamed as he opened the door.

Nate grabbed the covers around them.

“Conner, what is it?” CD asked him.

“I had a bad dream!” he exclaimed. “Will you sleep in my bed tonight?” he pleaded.

“You can sleep in here with Mommy and me,” Nate suggested.

“NO!” Conner cried. “I want Mommy to sleep in my bed with me!”

CD looked at Nate sadly and answered, “Go back to bed, Conner, and I’ll be there in a second.”

Conner nodded and ran back to his room.

CD sighed, put her clothes back on and looked at her sad husband. “I’m so sorry, honey,” she grinned. “When are we both going to be ‘sick’ again?”

“Can it be tomorrow?” Nate whined.

CD laughed. “That’s a little soon, sweetie. Men’s bathroom tomorrow?” she grinned broadly.

“I’m there,” he replied without a second thought. “Can we do it in our favorite spot, too?” he begged.

CD beamed. “Janitor’s closet it is,” she replied and blew him a kiss
goodnight.

Nate smiled. “Years later that woman can STILL drive me crazy.....” he muttered before falling asleep.

CD held onto Conner that night, thanking God for getting a chance at love and finally succeeding. She had another husband-- a husband that loved her more than anything else in his life. She actually had children, and three of them at that. She loved them so much and would do anything for them. Her career was taking off, and she didn’t know it yet, but in the coming month, the captain of the Felony Division was going to be none other than Candace Basso herself. She had everything she ever wanted-- love, a healthy life, a family, and most importantly-- a trusty janitor’s closet.

As much as I hate to see this fic end, I gotta say that was the perfect ending. I might have even felt a little tear fall down my cheek ;).
