Wife wanted to watch this last night for our Halloween night movie.

The Book Of Stone '69 :thumbsup: (A governess Julia comes to work in a bourgeois family that live in an afforested property that they have recently bought. Julia is to take care of little girl named Silvia, whose unusual demeanor may find its roots in the family garden.)

Creepy and atmospheric, I've yet to see a film by Mexican director Carlos Enrique Taboada I haven't liked. I'd say Poison For The Fairies is my favorite of his I've seen, but this one is right up there.



I also did a double feature of zero budget shot on video Halloween themed short movies from the late 80s/early 90s...


Something Of Mine '91 :thumbsup: (A ring of devil worshipers bring forth a demon and let it loose at a campus Halloween spook show.)

50 mins long. Some of the effects were actually well done. All the acting was pretty good considering.


Halloween Party '89 (Group of friends at a Halloween party are stalked by an undead killer)

Not sure how to rate this. It was bad, but this was made by teens to be shown on a local public access show in the 80s. I did like the background story of the killer. Some of the dialogue was inaudible.
It was 30 mins, the version I saw had the intro by the host of the public access show. There were also bloopers included from the movie, which were funny. Especially when the director had to keep telling his mom to get out of the shot.
They used bits of the John Carpenter's Halloween score, and even had girls at the party watching the movie.

The Blair Witch Project '99 :thumbsup:

This was the 3 hour cut. It's a combination of the 2 and a half hour festival cut (what the filmmaker's shopped around until finding distribution) and the rest were all of the deleted scenes that were available on various home media release, docus, etc.

Most of it I could see why it was cut out, more of Heather getting prepared before Josh picks her up, checking equipment.

The townspeople interviews were longer, and there was one townsperson cut out, instead of talking about the Blair Witch, she talked about Mary Brown (the weird lady interviewed outside her trailer)

There was a weird subplot that went nowhere, in the car after interviewing Mary Brown, the trio talk about how some of the people they tried to interview seemed dangerous, and Heather mentions there are lots of klansmen in town. Then later when they are in the woods Josh or Mike says he saw people in white hoods following them.

There's a few scenes of Mike and Josh mentally breaking down.

The only scenes I would have kept were- Heather explaining how she was inspired to make the documentary. And a scene right before Heather's on camera close up scene Mike says goodbye to his friends and family.

Her tormenters are kidnapped by a serial rapist/killer and she does not report it because he was the only person who has shown her kindness when he "rescued her" and did not harm her.

She then forms an unlikely bond with him and struggles with what to do as she doesn't want to save the girls who tormented her, but she sees how insane he is.

Mothers' Instinct (2024) on Hulu :thumbsup:

The film focuses on two next door neighbors in 1960 whose sons are best friends. After one of them dies in a freak accident, the mother who lost her son starts becoming close to the other boy.

At first the family thinks it's her way of coping, but then the mother starts to think that she wants to take her boy away from her.

It's an American remake of the 2018 French film.

The Meltdown Memoirs '06 :thumbsup: (Two hour making of/retrospective on the 1987 horror comedy Street Trash. Mixes interviews from the early to mid 2000s, and interviews from during the film being made from cast and crew.)

Street Trash '87 :thumbsup: (When a liquor store owner finds a case of "Viper" in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local hobos at one dollar a bottle, unaware of its true properties. The drinks causes its consumers to melt, very messily. Two homeless lads find themselves up against the effects of the toxic brew, as well as going head to head with "Bronson" a Vietnam vet with sociopathic tendencies, and the owner of the junkyard they live in.)


There's a 2024 remake/sequel from South Africa, haven't watched it yet.

An evil entity that feeds on trauma targets its victims by appearing as smiling people that only they could see. The victim eventually commits suicide in front of someone else as they display the evil grin. The witness then becomes the entity's next target and the chain continues.

A nurse at a psychiatric ward becomes the next target after one of her patients commits suicide in front of her. She realizes that what is occurring is not a mental issue, but a supernatural one as she looks into the previous people this has happened with.

A sequel, Smile 2, came out in 2024.

Pretty decent remake of the 1987 low-budget melt-fest. Filmed and set in South Africa, the original was shot and filmed in NYC



Crazy Fat Ethel '16 :thumbsdow (After years in a mental institution, Ethel is taken in by her aunt, although many people, including the institution's head nurse and a local detective, believe that discharging her was a huge mistake.)

The original film (Criminally Insane) was just over an hour long, this film is 20 minutes longer, filled with scenes that showed things that were only talked about in the original, the film dragged during those scenes. I did enjoy the 70s John Waters vibe it had.
