Has anyone noticed recently that Sitcoms Online has been slow loading and takes a long time to load? Yesterday, I even got a 503 error message when trying to post something and had to refresh again to fix the problem.

It's not as fast sometimes like before, but it's really hard to post for me when something like this happens.

Nothing you can really do about it I guess.

It seems pretty fast when moving from page to page right now. Posting speed seems normal, but there are probably some periodic slowdowns or lockups where it takes longer. Editing posts and searching always takes longer since it's more server intensive.

The server has been up for over 250 days, so I'm going to reboot it in the early morning hours to see if it helps. It should never be slower in the mornings compared to the afternoon or early evening when more people are online. The server load is in the normal range, so it might just be more search engine spiders than normal.

That's what I'm definitely experiencing. If it's less bots, users, and spiders, then I have no problem with slowness at all.

But hopefully the reboot will fix all of that.

It takes a really long time for a reply to come through, and sometimes the post can duplicate as well.

The problem is trying to identify what's causing the issues. It runs great about 99% of the time. It's the 1% when it's noticeably slower when people complain. There's no reason for it be slow between 6-9AM when there are very few people online. It always runs better and smoother in the afternoon and evening when there are many more people online.

I think the issue is with the memory usage due to the analog stats logs running in the mornings. That eats up all the memory and causes bottlenecks. Those have been turned off now, so we'll monitor it and see how it runs after making those changes.

We're getting it worked on and tweaked. It had run fine for the last 2 weeks for the most part until today. I'm not sure what's causing it, but hopefully it can be fixed.

I'm using Google Chrome and notice it's taking about 3 times as long for a post to show up and I'm getting the redirect message every time. I cleared my browser history, cache, etc. but it didn't help. Is it running slow for anyone else?

There are going to be times when it runs a little slow, such as when there are many people online and searching at the same time. There's not much that can be done about it. If it's slow for an extended period, then I can try to reboot it or fill out a support ticket.

I can't move it to a more expensive server. I had downgrade the RAM and CPUs a while back to get a better deal just to keep it online. No site runs fast 100% of the time without any issues. I'm sorry if people aren't able to reach their daily post quotas on some days, but life goes on. It's not something that should frustrate you that much.

It hadn't been an issue until the last few days. I adjusted the maximum crawl rate to slow them down. It should be more responsive in the next day or so. Remind me on July 8 if it becomes slow again.

I think that would be at odds with one of the site's interests, namely, recruiting new members. If a prospective new user can't even access the forums, there's practically no chance of them actually registering.

The is off topic, but media orgs. are really bad at keeping their websites up-to-date by archiving old news. You get years-old info. all the time, particularly from local TV channels.

First of all, there is "slow", and then there is "SLOW".

Watching a page spend 20-30 seconds to load is only minorly annoying.

In contrast, Composing a post, hitting "submit", and then nothing happens for over a minute SHOULD be considered unacceptable, by any reasonable standard.

So, you click again, suspecting your first click wasn't detected, and the next thing you know there is TJ commenting on "impatient posters causing duplicate posts".....makes ya feel like annexing the Sudetenland.....

SO was really slow Friday night, so I stayed away during the weekend. Speed is much better today.

People staying away was one of the reasons I asked about it.

GJ above made a comment about clicking twice and getting a double post. That happens on occasion without you clicking twice. It never happens when Quick Reply is working properly--but when it is a long wait, that's when it does happen occasionally.

This isn't just a Sitcoms Online problem as Facebook and my MSC app have also been slow today. Comcast needs to get their act together and bring back the fast internet they claim to have. :rolleyes:

FWIW, it seemed to get noticeably worse once live linking of Youtube videos became popular here.

I don't think the YouTube videos are a factor. It only really slows things down when 50-60 videos are crammed into a thread.

I know it's search engine bots when the server load is 5-6 throughout most of the day. They are sending hundreds of requests per minute. I further slowed them down. They can't be blocked entirely. Nobody would ever be able to find us.

Today the server load is under 2. 2-3 would be normal.

It's almost TOO fast. I can't stand it. There still might be an occasional hiccup here and there when the server gets overloaded. I'll just have to remember to reset the search console settings every three months or so.

10 seconds is kind of normal when searching almost 6 million posts. It's one of those days when it's running a little bit sluggish. I can tell when it's running slow (the server load is around 4, so that's not even that high), so these types of threads are really unnecessary. Patience is a virtue. Hopefully it will be back to normal speed tomorrow.

You make it a very frustrating, annoying and unpleasant experience for some people on here, but you still bless us with your presence almost daily. Whining and bitching about it won't magically make it run any faster. The sun will still rise tomorrow.

It has felt as though this forum has been on a "lower tier" of performance since about last Thursday or Friday...there have been intermittent spells where slowness has NOT been a problem, but unfortunately rare.

10 second searches are not a problem from where I sit, it'd the clicking on "GO" to start a search, and waiting while nothing whatsoever happens before the search even begins.


I usually have ABC news or some other high bandwidth site open on another tab, allowing me to verify if the slowness is at my end or not....and I'm fairly certain if I'm waiting and waiting and waiting for a new post to "go public" here, but I can go to the ABC news site, click on a link, and get immediate response....that's a reliable indicator that the problem in not at my end

Just for reference, after hitting "post" for the previous reply, the "Redirecting, thanks for your blah blah blah" message was up for 35 seconds before actually taking me to the post in question.

That seems pretty slow. If it took a newspaper 35 seconds to show it's text every time you turned the page, I suspect that circulation might suffer.

The frustrating thing is that it will run well for 2-3 weeks without any major issues, but then there is a random day where it becomes sluggish for most of the day. I think a lot of it is bot traffic. I'm going to reboot the server late tonight.

35 seconds seems like a bit of an exaggeration. Did you have a stopwatch to time that?

I just made five threads. I didn't experience any delay like that. The server load is under 3 right now. It seems pretty responsive to me.

A novice tech person like me knows it can be slow and faster at different times of the day, too too bad people have no patience, they need to work on the patience virtue. No it's hurry hurry and it should be done yesterday...:eek::confused:

There were certainly occasional issues with the speed even when we had 8 GB of memory. We have 6 GB of memory now, so not that much has changed.

It's not going to be lightning fast on every page load. It never has been. Patience is a virtue. Good things come to those who wait.

It's a good thing that people can multitask with other windows and tabs open. People can get up and take a pee break while they wait 35 seconds for their post to appear.

My trusty Casio Pathfinder, ABC....and the main reason I volunteered the information that I did was intended as contrast to Wawwie's "10 second" observation that you (rightly IMO) dismissed.

I just felt that if you believed that 10 seconds is "typical", then you deserved more accurate information.:)

Last Thursday was the last day I recall things running smoothly, Friday was horrible, (but I said nothing, suspecting things would bet back to normal).

Things have improved marginally since that time. But if anyone is telling you "all is well", I believe they are pumping sunshine.....

I blocked over 1,000 bad bots last night. I also changed the crawl delay to 10 seconds to slow the good bots down. The server load hasn't gone much above 2 for most of the day. I don't think it has run any faster in the last 2-3 years. :)

The speed doesn't suck.

I know you are only trying to generate some activity, but we really don't need 30-40 older threads bumped up at a time. That's an overwhelming amount. I'm not sure how many people are going back to a second or third page to see threads.

It would be better to limit it to maybe 10 or so threads per board (especially the main Chit Chat base) per day that will generate some new replies. Spread them out a little. The best threads to revive are the evergreen type topics that ask questions.

Dude is right, messageboard speed this past week has been pretty good. I found myself thinking several times "what ever he fixed, I hope it stays this way". Quantum improvement over that time a while back where wawwie was unhappy with the speed.

It would be nice if Dude111 just stopped bumping threads in general.

I'd rather see a busy board vs a dead one...so many never post. I'm on a forum now for 7 yrs and I've been thinking about quitting for some time now... The forum itself is not user friendly and I've even tried to get Games going, get a few replies now and then and then Nothing... Why I stay, I guess I like to offer my years of what I've been doing, but then I say "they don't deserve me".... The group is just boring and blah....when I first joined it was busier and more friendly but.......

I don't mind reading some of the old threads......many don't interest me.

I don't see any problems with bumping up old threads to generate some activity. There are plenty of good older topics. Since they are from so many years ago, they would be new to most active members.

The issue is with the amount of threads that he's bumping up on some days. He shouldn't be bumping up more than 10 per day on the main Chit Chat board.

Perspective might be a factor? I often am amazed to see a dozen or more freshly bumped "does anyone have the recipe for mud?" type contemporary threads, all gang bumped within minutes of one another.

Often, as TJ mentions, it's the sheer quantity bumped all at once for no apparent reason, that seems noteworthy,but at other times it's amazing the longevity some threads carry, for reasons one can only speculate. :)

Sometimes it appears almost as if one member trying to bury the efforts of another by "piling on"
