I think Paul might be one of the developers of vBulletin. He works as a software engineer. He has a lot more knowledge and experience when it comes to optimizing the software and servers in general. I've had to learn everything on the fly.

I can see he has a lot of options turned for guests. I don't know if he's blocking bots. We're also quite a bit larger than his forums. He has only about 25 forums compared to almost 4,000. We also have over 250,000 more threads and 3.5 million more posts than he does. His forums look like they have much less activity.

Anyone can obviously read every post here if they want to but it's gotta be crazy to be notified every time a post is made.

We're only getting 200-300 posts per day. I don't read every post. I just have everything filtered and organized in different folders.

It's running well today. Maybe the Brazil bots are denying service at some other site.

Right now its a little slow....... (10-12 sec response time)

There's been a huge amount of bot activity in June. We've had more unique visitors in June than all of January-May combined. I'm blocking 200-300 of the most connecting IP addresses per day. Once I've built up the block list, it should run faster more consistently.

It's a good way to increase membership and possible participation. I noticed a lot more new registrations when I turned off thread viewing for guests. Many people will never register unless they want to post something.

The downside is that Google and Bing can't crawl and index the site. It will lead to less page views.

I think their forums are slower because of all of the ads. I don't know how their ads are bypassing ad blockers.

Plus they’re Invision Community, not vBulletin, if that matters. I, personally, never found the site slow, and I use no ad blockers.

Maybe it's a PC/browser only issue. I find their forums difficult to navigate with all of the scrolling. The amount of ads they have isn't helping the speed.

Paul has more than 1 server running that site...... When I last was on 5 mins ago I was server "osmium.zmnt.uk" and there were 10422 guests on it but the site is still running fast....

cdTJ had to activate Cloudflare because of the swarm of malicious AI and bots really slowing things down. As a result, most of us will now have a few seconds verifying we are human. You don't have to do anything, it will verify automatically.

Yes, good now. I think either some bad actor(s) got in, or someone was doing a lot of searches.

It is really bad this evening, I agree. Of course, I notice a certain constant user is on here as he is for hours on end, posting his clickbait links--he could be doing a ton of searches.

It almost seems like For some reason Todd took Cloudfare off of here..

I'm still using Cloudflare. Every country except the USA, United Kingdom and Canada are getting the managed challenges. I don't think any bots from outside countries are hitting the server.

It just looks like many Google (49,737 requests in the last 24 hours) and Bing (76,979 requests) bots. It could have been a Cloudflare issue.

It was relatively slow early this morning, but it's normal now.

There's some rogue bot on here launching tons of requests, IMO. It went away late this morning, but now it's back.

There's not a lot of guests on right now. The server load is low. I don't see anything unusual in the logs. I'm not sure why there's so much delay between loading pages.

I don't agree. Back a few posts Todd mentioned 50,000 Google requests and 77,000 Bing requests in 24 hours. That's a ton of requests. All these search engines are using AI now, and they're probably doing these aggressive requests to educate it.

The registered users aren't being denied service, but we're really being slowed, and it started yesterday. Not only are searches slowed, but many quick replies now no longer are.

I've changed the crawl rate in the Bing Webmaster Controls. It's crawling at too fast of a rate. I don't mind it crawling faster when most people are sleeping.

The default was set at the same rate as 2-6 AM all day. It's going to being slower when there's huge spikes in the number of requests.

I went onto City Data one other time just to look at it, and ISTR many boards on there (all the cities, I guess). So I'm guessing it has a server or servers with a ton of bandwidth. A site like that can probably tolerate a lot of crawlers along with its users. Plus they probably use Cloudflare, too.

I'm doing the best I can buddy. I just made those changes. It's going to take some time for them to go into effect. Let's wait and see how it runs the next 24 hours.

Cloudflare has saved the site. It would likely not be accessible at all without it.

I'm doing everything possible to make it run faster more consistently. I wish you could accept that it's never going to be as fast as city-data. I can't compete with their server resources.

You e-mailed the other day telling me many of the forums you visit are dealing with the same bot issues. Remember when you said major attacks are going on across the web right now. Paul's site is DEAD sadly. It has very little activity. videokarma still has the same server is too busy at the moment message. killermovies.com is still down unfortunately.

I'm the most impatient person in the world but I'm gonna be patient on this one. These bots are a problem and it appears they're a constant, or consistent, problem.

I haven't seen any error messages. I've blocked both the BingBot and Googlebot in Cloudflare for now. It's definitely faster with both of them blocked.

I can maybe allow them access during the late night hours when there's less humans online. Another option would be to allow one at a time and block the other. BingBot is making 2-3 times more requests, so I think that one is causing more issues. Maybe the server can better handle one of them at a time.

The reality is that thousands of bots are connecting via http. I can see it in the log files. They use http to bypass bot detection. It's slowing it down.

If someone visits an old http link to our forums or blog, then they are going to get the not secure warning message. There are reasons why 99.9% of sites do the automatic https rewrites.

There are workarounds for people still using IE6. I will have to see if it's possible to do a custom rule in Cloudflare for older browsers.

Just got a 503 Server Unavailable message. Got one yesterday too.

The response time is really good but maybe the bad bots are breaking thru again.

Other than the occasional 503 error, it's running pretty well. It looks like an unusually high number of requests from Googlebot and BingBot in the last 24 hours. I have all of the AI crawlers blocked. I allowed the ones they classify as AI Search.

I'm only guessing here, but IMO you can't compare what happens on another site with what happens on this site. There certainly are differences in memory depending on the computer or computers involved.

Certainly what happened last night wasn't normal--my guess is it was for about a half hour that the server was overwhelmed by something. And that would sound like a DDOS.
