My friend Paul was having problems with slowness on his VBB site (I didnt see it but other members did) and he went and deleted everyones subscribed threads. (I guess people dont ever clear them and it bogs it down) and ppl said it made it better... (It was the same for me (Nice and fast))

TJ maybe go clear all the subscribed threads from all accts here and see what happens buddy?? (Although I reckon that only affects ppl who have tons of subscribed threads)

The subscribed threads are a big issue if people are using fake or e-mail addresses that no longer exist. There are thousands of bounced e-mails sent back to the server on a daily basis. I've unsubscribed people who are getting hundreds of e-mail notifications bounced in the past. I don't think it would be fair to unsuscribe people who want to receive them.

It's either bots/spiders or too many resources being used when people are doing a lot of searches.

Yea it's been real slow the last few days.

I had trouble with posting some photos on Saturday, and it took a long time for a reply.

It seems to go by times. Like just now from 8 to 8:15 approx., it was impossible, taking over a minute to do anything.

Same thing at some ridiculously early hour yesterday like 3:30 am.

Probably the most annoying thing is the so-called quick reply, that can take way over a minute when these problems are happening. Posters simply give up.

I have a feeling TJ is letting the site go.....

Second day in a row I've had a delayed Quick Reply that resulted in a duplicate post. That problem had largely been eliminated.

Yes, it's OK now. If someone was doing multiple searches or whatever, maybe there is a way to stop it. It's really hosing things up!

There's no reason for slowdowns at 7 AM or in the early morning hours when fewer people are online. I submitted a trouble ticket a few weeks ago. They said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It was running without any issues at the time. I have to submit a trouble ticket when there are problems for an extended period of time.

It runs perfectly fine about 95% of the time. It's going to occasionally slow down when there's a lot of searches, editing posts, deleting posts, etc. happening at the same time. The timeout is set at 300 seconds, so any searches or other requests which last longer won't work.

Limit yourself to ONE search at a time until it completes. It doesn't help when people have 20 tabs open at once doing multiple searches at the same time to bump up 20 year old threads. Try using the Google search bar instead of the forum search. It doesn't use the server's resources.

Maybe it would run faster at 7 AM if he stopped doing 20 searches at the same time. The searches are very database intensive. It's most likely to timeout when doing a search.

That would naturally make your computer a whole lot slower.. City Data with what I have heard about its horrible moderating doesn't need emulated at all, and two other random sites I haven't heard of. http is not blocked! The .htaccess file automatically redirects to https. That's the way my host set it up. Google doesn't want both https and http in the search results. I'm not going to change it and possibly screw things up even more. Deal with it. :)

Sorry for the earlier downtime. The forums were very slow to connect, but the blog and rest of the site were loading without any issues.

Our host said it appeared to be be a DDoS attack. It was being flooded with connections. They blocked the IPs that had the highest access.

It's running pretty fast now.

Sometimes it doesn't create a new page for some reason. I'm not sure what causes it. Maybe the post cache doesn't get updated. It doesn't happen frequently. I don't think I've seen it happen with back-to-back posts. If you delete a post and re-post it, it should appear. The posts are usually in the database.

There has been 2400-2500 users/guests/bots online pretty much non-stop the last three days. I'm not sure where they are all coming from. There must be some rogue bots.

I had slowed the crawl rate for the Yandex bot out of Russia. It would be easier to block 1-2 IP addresses. Some of these bots/crawlers have hundreds of different IP addresses.

Yeah, the quick reply is the worst, this evening. It just doesn't work, and you're getting a regular reply length, with a long wait of 30 seconds or more.

With past problems that often resulted in a duplicate post, but I haven't seen that, and had it happen only once, earlier today.

I looked at the IP addresses and user agents of guests.

I blocked the Bytespider. The bot is from China or Singapore. It's loading much faster now.

This bot was very aggressive and abusive. I tried manually blocking a few IP addresses. It was using hundreds/thousands of different IP addresses and flooding it with connections.

That Cable Forum looks a lot like SO running 3.8.11. They have a crazy high number of guests also. Tell him to look at the IP addresses and user agents. They probably have some rogue bots.

Currently Active Users: 3968 (1 members and 3967 guests)

On this vBulletin-looking site, the guy says he bans the bots. It sounds like a different approach to me. But they have the same problem.

So sad after the other night!!

Active users were from 965 to 1048 in the last 15 minutes to a half hour - probably none of them members. And those 83 non-members really slowed things down, from operating really well, to a crawl.

At this time only 2 members are logged on. (I used the back function so that figure is probably from a little while ago.)

If you have a server that has a few members logged on but it's being bogged down with over a thousand "guests," it stands to reason that the guests are slowing things down.

So, I think it's the bots, not the server. Just an uninformed opinion, though.

I have blocked a number of the AI bots. They are just scraping content to train their AI. There's no way to slow them down. The server just can't handle too much volume when they are connecting hundreds of times in quick succession.

What about increasing the amount of time before you can do another search to 60 or 90 seconds? That would maybe slow down the bot pests.

I didn't contact them. I don't know how much they would have been able to help. If you just go by the server load, it wouldn't seem slow. You have to actually be on here to experience it.

I did my own research. It's easier to just block browser agents instead of individual IP addresses, which I had been doing. I will probably block all bots besides the essential ones like Google, Bing and maybe a few other search engines. They benefit us and send traffic.

I just rebooted the server. It had an incredible 522 days of uptime. I should probably reboot it every 2 weeks or so to give it a fresh start and clean it up. Sometimes it helps to just unplug it and plug it back in.

One way to prove it out would be to pick a time, maybe for an hour, and block out non members totally, and see if there is any effect.

I can't imagine that over 650 non-members would be on here, all for good reasons.

Also I don't see any reason why a DOS attack would be involved. What's the point? Kicks?

I changed some of the MySQL settings back to the defaults and let it optimize them. There shouldn't be that much delay between page loads. The server load rarely goes above 4 or 5.

We'll see how it goes for the next 24 hours.

Right now its pretty good buddy....... (Im back on what I usually use (4-6 second response time))

The MySQL settings and configuration make all the difference. I will continue to tweak it and make any recommended changes. You might get some database errors when I restart it.

I think it's generally running faster than it was, say a week ago. There are occasional slow times, which has always been the case. I always picture it as someone doing a search or something else that saps a lot of resources.

I only come here if the site I usually use connects but lately its bene nothing but timeouts....... I feel bad for Todd....... He lets people walk all over him..... This host is a JOKE (And I hope they are reasding this now) They lied to hjim about http/https and in sure the poor boy doesnt know what to think...... I think he believes me but doesnt know what to do........

With all the problems this site is having I just wanna see if its faster going in direct.... I would ask Todd to keep HTTP enabled.... At this pooint I just wanna test things.

What he did was put some instructions in the HT ACCESS FILE to look for browsers that send the "HTTPS ONLY" flag and if they do,they are forced to HTTPS. Thats how IE6 can stay HTTP there now.... (And maybe other browsers also)

Im pretty sure changing your USER AGENT to look like IE6 wouldnt work seeing the browser would still send "HTTPS ONLY"

If the sites on Proboards are private, and therefore don't have bots/crawlers, and TJ blocked the malicious Facebook crawler a few months ago and things improved, it stands to reason the problem is other malicious bots. Crawlers which index the site are of value; otherwise, there probably would rarely be new users.

I was reading the Yandex site (a search engine I never heard of) and there are even bots which appear to be Yandex bots but aren't; these kind are probably an example of the malicious ones.

I blocked many Alibaba bots last night. They are just scraping content for AI purposes. Some are easy to block by the user agent. Some have to be blocked by IP address.

This is basically the same server we've been on for years. It only has a little less memory. We didn't have to deal with the amout of bots scraping pages a few years ago.

They still connect even if they are blocked from viewing pages. The main issue is with the amount of connections. Some are connecting 200-300 times at the same time on the same IP address. That's what causes the delay between loading pages. The server has to close and clear connections before accepting more.

Since that Yandex site said they frequently change IP addresses of the bots, this must be an ongoing battle.

I can tell when it slows down when there's hundreds of connections from similar IP addresses. Most of these are Facebook bot IP addresses. This is just blatant abuse. They don't follow any limits in the robots.txt file. They will continue to scrape content until you block them. Even when I have them blocked, they are using up connections. I've blocked thousands of IP addresses.

Its gotta be a delibrate attack.....

We're on a dedicated server. There's no other sites on it besides http://goldengirlscentral.com (it doesn't have a SSL on it anymore), which a member created years ago.

It would be nice if you could accept that it's never going to be as fast as city-data or some of the other sites you visit.

This comment/question is not meant as a complaint, but I'm wondering if there's anything the ISP could do to block these DOS-like attacks, esp. if most of it is coming from Facebook.

TJ thanks for all you do; you must be tired of dealing with this--it's gotta be really frustrating.

Our host will help to a degree if it is completely inaccessible. There have been a few times when it was obviously being DDoS'd when they were able to get things back to normal.

I've learned how to block the IP addresses myself in the last 3-4 years. I look them up at https://abuseipdb.com to see if they have been reported. I have many of the AI bots blocked by the user agent. There's some like Alibaba where I've had to block their entire ranges of IP addresses. They have thousands of IP addresses.

It's frustrating to deal with the periodic slowdowns. I think it would help if some of the bots could be automatically blocked with a service like Cloudflare. I know many sites use them or similar services.

Has anyone else had this problem? With certain posts on Sitcoms, I'll pull them up, and all I get is a blank white screen--like the post won't load. Then I'll get a message that the site isn't responding.

Since Comcast recently made some changes on my internet connection, I suspect that's the problem--but I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem.

It's hard to know what causes stuff like this. It could be some fluke with the way Sitcoms interacts with my browser (Safari), my old router, or a relatively new operating system change.

There sometimes might be an issue with embedded YouTube videos loading.

Are you using an ad blocker? Sometimes I notice pages on other sites will hang or a blank page will display.

Clearing out your temporary internet files may help. My Chrome browser runs out of memory quite a bit on other sites. I have the memory saving set to maximum to close inactive tabs.

There's definitely an issue with Comcast in my area. They were in the neighborhood to try and fix it a few weeks ago. My connection has been dropping every three or four hours.

I turned off the ad blocker and that page would still not load. I clear history/cache every night, but maybe I need to do it more often.

I think it's Comcast, and also my 9 year old router. Comcast told me I could save $ with gig speed internet, for a year. That, combined with cable now going through the old router (the new cable modem they insisted I needed routes cable through the internet/Wi-Fi), is probably the problem.

No, it's not a speed issue--I was just lazy and didn't start another thread. I think the bandwidth the cable modem takes is probably too much for the old router.

That's my basic go to for ALL electronic device repair. Unplug, plug back in.

Starting at around 8pm, it ran about as well as Aaron Rodgers played last season, which is to say it was trash.

I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. It didn't help very much because there were still thousands of connections. I had to turn everything off for guests. It was getting absolutely hammered by bots.

I blocked all of Vietnam. That helped stabilize it a little bit after a few hours. I might have to block some others like Singapore and others known for bots/spammers.

The guests have dropped from 5,000-6,000 to under 3,000.

I don't think the ads are excessive compared to some other sites. They help pay for this wonderful server.

Accessing the message boards without signing in results in the forums being unreadable and the last post section in each forum shows either "never" or "private". After signing in, the forums are then readable. This issue hasn't happened before until today. Don't know if it's my computer or maybe TJ made some adjustments to the message boards.

It makes sense to allow search engines to "scrape" data. I suppose the problem is weeding out all the bad actors.

I can't put everything behind a password. Google and Bing need to be able to view the pages to index them.

It's definitely running a lot better now than it was earlier in the week. I've blocked more IP addresses in the last few days than I have in the last few years combined. I blocked all of Vietnam. They are probably spammers. I don't know what these IP addresses from Brazil are doing. It would be easier to use Cloudflare to block specific countries.

That sounds like a whole lot of extra work for Todd just because you keep insisting on HTTP. No one else here has ever complained about HTTPS.

I don't know if it will work, but I removed three lines from the .htacess file as a test. Most sites will automatically rewrite any http urls to https.

Most browsers and search engines will automatically detect https, so I think it will still work this way.

It's not going to be noticeably faster for him with http. He will still complain about non-existent 30 second timeouts when it slows down. The timeout is set to 300 seconds.

He added a rule in the HTACCESS file that looks for browsers that send out "HTTPS ONLY" and if they do,they get HTTPS...... Older browsers that dont can stay HTTP.

Alot of sites have images that dont show up on the HTTP side because they have them configured for HTTPS... City-data was like that.. You could use HTTP there but alot of thier stuff didnt show up right.......... (They didnt make sure it was right)

So far everything I have noticed is showing up on the http side here.. No Blank images,etc...........

When Gab first unblocked http on spiritualforums there was problems with some images but he got it corrected within a day......

I'm pretty sure it's been an automatic redirect in Safari for quite a while. I did not initially change my favorite to https, and it automatically went to https for
Sitcoms rather than erroring out. Once I noticed it I fixed the favorite.

Safari recently ditched the padlock indicator for https, since virtually every legit site has gone to ssl. (Yes, i know you have several http sites you use--probably the only few left.) I haven't seen any http site for months; a local affiliate of Gas Buddy was http, but they folded into the national site a few months ago.

No, using your link, Safari automatically redirects to https. Also if I change the url to http, it changes it back to https.

httpforever.com as an example gives a "Not Secure" warning with the site name. That's been happening for http with Safari for a long time.

There's no ID string listed on the Who's Online page. That type of detailed information is in the analog/web stats.

I didn't see the User Agent option at the bottom of the page. It's not turned on by default. It will make it easier to block some of the bad bots without looking up so many ip addreses.

I like this Safari,it has an easy way of changing the UA to anythng ya want!!

Right now there's over 4500 "guests" and the response time is pretty slow I'm wondering if this Cloudflare would help and if we could help with the cost of that, too.

The stop sign means they are blocked from viewing it. Guests can no longer view member profiles, the members list, the calendar, the who's online list, or use the search. I also turned off the tags option sitewide for now because that page was getting heavily hit.

Maybe the bots/guests will get bored and start leaving if they can't view everything.

I've been getting a lot of Cannot Open Page messages, and I have to close Safari and reopen it multiple times.

Has anyone noticed recently that Sitcoms Online has been slow loading and takes a long time to load? Yesterday, I even got a 503 error message when trying to post something and had to refresh again to fix the problem.Maybe your browser is timing out Ma.. It was so slow last night I could barely get thru anything..

When you have nearly 4000 "guests" connected, you'd have to think many of them are malicious botnets. There aren't that many search engines, even taking into account that they would have multiple crawlers.

I couldn't even search up the site this morning.

Yea whats wierd Stevie is on my friend Pauls site,he can have 20,000 guests and the site is still good...... Whats the difference between here and cableforum.co.uk/board???

Todd tried to register and got an error and I got the same error trying to help him reg.. Im wondering if Paul has all but UK addresses blocked??

I dont think Todd knows whats causing it..... He blocks a bunch of BS and its fast for awhile but then slows down again.......
