View Full Version : The FOL "Off Campus" Thread
'80sSitcoms 12-18-2018, 01:23 PM Welcome to Peekskill!
This thread is for any conversations/topics we may like to get into that actually don't have anything to do with "The Facts of Life" (believe it or not, there are such things! It's a "fact of life"! ). So we can actually step off the campus grounds and roam around town talking about whatever. :gossip
I know the forums have a board for non-TV talk, but I thought it'd be fun to have one here just for us " 'Facts' folks". :)
RetroGuy2000 12-18-2018, 01:37 PM We could go in-depth, but I and others believe it's basically about what Jill and Polly say about Susan, about her desire to be grown-up and taken seriously as an adult. I don't even think it's anything about "sex" (I'm looking at you, Rowling), it's that she chose to focus on the material world at hand and fitting into the world as an "at last" adult, thereby saying farewell to her spiritual experiences from earlier years.
Yeah, but if Eustace and Edmund could be saved, even after all their bad behavior, why couldn't Susan? Does putting on make-up and nylons make one a bad person? If Aslan could cure Eustace and Edmund of brattiness and betrayal, why couldn't he knock some sense into Susan?
I'll have to let you know some of what the Companion says (it's an encyclopedia of Narnia), and what some of my rebuttal thoughts are.
I look forward to it.
He did! In Prince Caspian..."Come, child, let me breathe on you. There. Do you feel better now?" "A little, Aslan." (though naysayers say that's one sign right there---she only feels "a little" better)
No, I meant after she got into fashion and stuff. I know he breathed on her in PC, but she obviously didn't abandon Narnia while she was in Narnia.
'80sSitcoms 12-18-2018, 03:26 PM If Aslan could cure Eustace and Edmund of brattiness and betrayal, why couldn't he knock some sense into Susan?
No, I meant after she got into fashion and stuff. I know he breathed on her in PC, but she obviously didn't abandon Narnia while she was in Narnia.
Ah, sorry. Well, I know you know Aslan is "Aslan" only in Narnia, so he couldn't transcend into our world and in lion form and breathe on her.
But, there is always the argument that there is hope for Susan. After all, in LWW Aslan states to the four children, "Once a King or Queen in Narnia, always a King or Queen in Narnia." (poster's emphasis, lol). And since he wrote LWW first, that's weightier than anything else. So to me it's obvious that Susan can---and will---one day eventually find her way into Narnia, the new everlasting Narnia. :)
Some years ago I had the lovely opportunity to once meet the author of the "Inside Narnia" books, Professor Devin Brown, and we had a private talk about Narnia (hey, kind of like Peter and Susan got to meet with a professor in LWW---neat!). And I made notes from his books to bring with me to discuss, and of course "Susan's fall" was a topic I had to broach with him. And when I brought up how she said, paraphrasing, "Oh, fancy you, remembering those silly games we used to play as children!", and wondering how could she forget Narnia, he said, "Well, she couldn't think it was all a game, otherwise she'd be insane," lol. So that was her excuse in not taking part in Narnia talks with the others back home; she was dismissing it, purposefully, but not actually believing they were made-up "silly games". That's a point I hadn't considered before, and it turned on a new bulb and made more sense (for that point in and of itself, anyway; of course most of us agree it doesn't make sense her fall happened in the first place).
The Companion does bring up good points, but, it seems they're points you see if you go looking for them. In my reading experience I didn't see those points as such, so that's why the wind was knocked out of me.
My phone is messed up. The issue with my Purchased apps started Friday morning, but then the disappearing emails issue I first noticed yesterday.
Hopefully, I'll be getting a new phone for my birthday next year and those problems won’t happen anymore.
RetroGuy2000 12-18-2018, 03:50 PM Ah, sorry. Well, I know you know Aslan is "Aslan" only in Narnia, so he couldn't transcend into our world and in lion form and breathe on her.
Pshh! He's Aslan. He can do anything. In The Silver Chair, he opens a portal from Narnia to Britain, and then tells the kids that he will turn his back to that land, not that he can't actually go there. Plus, since he made Narnia, and Narnian products can get through (like the tree that the wardrobe was made from), it seems to me like he has the power to go to Earth, if he chooses.
IMO, all he'd have to do is open a portal and look at her in an Aslan-y way, and she'd rush to him, weeping for forgiveness.
I choose to believe this, too. No way is Susan a permanent exile.
Some years ago I had the lovely opportunity to once meet the author of the "Inside Narnia" books, Professor Devin Brown, and we had a private talk about Narnia (hey, kind of like Peter and Susan got to meet with a professor in LWW---neat!). LOL, yep!

That's a point I hadn't considered before, and it turned on a new bulb and made more sense (for that point in and of itself, anyway; of course most of us agree it doesn't make sense her fall happened in the first place).
No, because she'd spent too much time in Narnia to just believe, or even pretend to believe, it didn't exist.

Good luck with the phone, Mikaela!
Thanks Retro! Talked to someone from Apple yesterday, and the issue got escalated to the engineers.
Will be hearing back either by phone or email in the next few days.
'80sSitcoms 12-18-2018, 04:16 PM Pshh! He's Aslan. He can do anything. Plus, since he made Narnia, and Narnian products can get through (like the tree that the wardrobe was made from), it seems to me like he has the power to go to Earth, if he chooses.
Yeah there's some ambiguity there. Like Narnian relics can come to our world, but Aslan can't (after all, he tells the children in VDT he is "known by another name here" and they must learn him by that name. So I guess Aslan and Jesus can't be in the same world twice, lol).
IMO, all he'd have to do is open a portal and look at her in an Aslan-y way, and she'd rush to him, weeping for forgiveness.
Now that is a lovely image and thought!

Yeah, and then she would run her hands through his mane, and she'd cry, and they'd make up. Then he'd breathe on her and say, "Rise, child. I am here, dear heart. Once a queen of Narnia, always a queen of Narnia. Your sins are forgiven. Put away your nylons and lip gloss. For the Deeper Magic from before the Dawn of Time doesn't approve of such things."
Then they'd go for a gallop through the countryside, and all would be well!
THE END

Ha! Nice ending...only, with you saying "lip gloss", this dialogue would have to be included:
"They're lipsticks, okay, Mr. Aslan??"
"Sorry, Daughter of Eve. I keep forgetting. They're 'lipsticks'. "

I’m spending time with family as well. My grandmother passed away a few weeks ago, she had Alzheimer’s so it was a long decline that we knew would come soon

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Lorimar. My aunt's husband got it early-onset and he passed away from it last year on Black Friday, so I know what you mean. Hugs to you, my friend.

No. Just plain old cranberry sauce unfortunately.
Here's the menu:
Ham
Mashed Potatoes
Cranberry Sauce
Cooked Pineapples
Corn
Rolls
Cinnamon rolls will be in the morning, and not part of the meal.

LOL! Whats the closest you've come?
It’s about 50 miles from where I grew up. The Boy Scouts troop I was part of owned some land and property there. We’d go there, and stay mostly on the property and surrounding woods (I remember a lake). But I’m sure occasionally we’d head into the town itself. Wish I had a better memory for stuff like this.
(There was one store I think with great edibles, but they burned down and ended up selling pop culture gifts with the help of the guy from ER).

The exteriors for Eastland are at Pomona College in Claremont, California (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pomona+College/@34.097743,-117.711803,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x8d4dc76d6821a77e?ved=2ahUKEwj_8OHAmrDfAhWLGnwKHQAmDOAQ_BIwGnoECAYQCA). I've never seen the exterior for Eastlake. I actually am not sure I've even heard of where it is.
There is, however, a YouTube video which shows an abandoned girls' school in the Peekskill area of New York. I haven't been there, but that is one creepy video!

My friend from Maine would say bubbla when he was talking about a water fountain. I'd never heard of that. His accent seemed to be a mixture of Boston and Canadian, eh?
When I moved to Arizona in 1995, I had to get used to saying soda. People here didn't know what pop is.
Still, I think I'd be too tongue-tied, meeting the Lost Girls, to even think about Lorimar's Nor'eastern accent.

Weeelllll, as much as I love the dorm, it's not "classic" in the same sense as the cafeteria. When I refer to "the classic cafeteria years", I mean the show when it was at its cultural and air wave peak, those seasons 2 through 4. Now, I realize I am probably biased because I grew up with them in syndication as a little boy (but the dorm, too). But I think when most people think of FOL, they think of the cafeteria years.
I wonder what Mrs Ramsey thinks of Tootie now living with a person her husband tried to make Tootie transfer schools to get away from?

No you’re right. I’d order the most memorable sets as:
Cafeteria
Edna’s Edibles
Over our heads
Original dorm
Sadly the common room would be last because it WAS only 13 eps of the show

Going across:
1. Some ghastly later-season episode with El Debarge
2. A later-season episode with George Clooney
3. I'll guess "Molly's Holiday", since she's in that one a lot.
4. "Dope", of course. That's Emily trying to peer pressure Sue Ann.
5. "The Beginning of the End/Beginning", although I couldn't tell you if it's part 1 or 2.
6. "The Beginning of the End/Beginning", although I couldn't tell you if it's part 1 or 2.
7. "Starstruck"? Looks like Jermaine Jackson
8. "Best Sister" with Eve Plum.

Isn't this a different one? I thought the one you shared a few years ago was more a Q&A style? Like, from a teen magazine? One question was, "What was your worst job?", and she said " 'The Facts of Life.'", and something about having been cut from the show, and brought back for 1 episode, and "It was humiliating."
This snippet is interesting though, seeing what her mother said---and I bet Molly eventually agreed with her!

Honestly these guys inspired me to rewatch the show, that way I have plenty to add. I’m on season 6 of my binge.
The Breakfast Club was just recently on TV the other day, and immediately thought of everyone.

Thanks, ON! It helps when you have some enthusiastic partners who genuinely enjoy the show. Discussing the show with '80s and Lorimar and others has been soooo much fun! They keep things interesting, with their theories and ideas and silliness.

YT has removed most of the episodes, but you can find nearly every episode on DailyMotion: for DM, you can type in S01E01 (etc) to find most episodes. Amazon also has low-cost DVDs, so for about $5.00, you can have hours of entertainment. We'd love to hear your thoughts (How will you feel about The Crock, Prototype Monica, Eve Plum as an older sister, Helen Hunt as a pothead, the dorm vs the cafeteria, Mr. Parker sneaking around in the bushes, the Lost Girls and their cameos, Nancy getting "Nancied", Molly's harsh words for the producers, the Julie Confusion, the girls' missing siblings, all the crazy globes everywhere, the cheese dip, etc).

NICE! That film is such a classic, and I think it definitely captures a bit of high school life in the 1980s. Molly really shines, there. Would love to hear your thoughts on the film, if you got to see most of it. You could even make a thread in the FOL forum. We will definitely read and respond.
And of course, if you want to watch FOL episodes, they are free on Daily Motion, from the backdoor pilot "Diff'rent Strokes - the Girls' School" all the way through the 2001 TV movie. We focus mainly on the classic episodes from the first four/six seasons (after that, the show got strange and lost some of its charm and wonderful characters), but don't let that stop you from watching any episode!

Looks like I messed up big time on my review of The Breakfast Club.

I not only remember McDonaldland, I remember when Mayor McCheese was sued by H.R. Pufnstuf for copyright infringement (https://news.avclub.com/tour-the-forsaken-mcdonaldland-that-sid-and-marty-kroff-1798251729).

I also remember when Burger King had rip-off McDonaldland characters (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burger_King_Kingdom), including the original Burger King (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8eSUVFF7cY) (not that creepy king that never spoke), the Duke of Doubt, and Sir Shakes-a-Lot.

Haha, nice...did you have any favorite McDonaldand characters?? Before McDonaldland became all---"lost"! ?
(and you didn't mention Saturday morning cartoons!)
Lorimar Television 01-15-2019, 12:28 AM I remember Saturday morning cartoons and playing in the McDonalds indoor playground as well as the characters in the commercials. I even remember the little animal cracker like cookies in the shapes of the characters.
'80sSitcoms 01-15-2019, 12:42 AM I remember Saturday morning cartoons and playing in the McDonalds indoor playground as well as the characters in the commercials.
You had an indoor playground?? Wow...our small town had 2 McDonald'ses (lol), and only 1 had a playground. That was outside. I can still feel the play units outside, and smell them, and hear the wood chips cracking underfoot. :)
And man oh man, I loved the commercials! Especially seeing them on Saturday mornings back when I was younger

Yup, McDonaldland Cookies! :)
RetroGuy2000 01-15-2019, 12:43 AM Haha, nice...did you have any favorite McDonaldand characters?? Before McDonaldland became all---"lost"! ?
My sister and I had Mayor McCheese and Hamburglar pens. I guess those were our faves? What were yours?
(and you didn't mention Saturday morning cartoons!)
I think we might have already discussed this? I was a big fan of the Smurfs, and enjoyed FOL introducing The Smurfs in those little segments.
We also liked The Littles, Gummy Bears, The Pink Panther, Scooby-Doo... too many to name.

I like 'em all, but probably Mayor McCheese, and I've also been fascinated by "Captain Crook" as an adult, lol. He catches Filet-O-Fish sandwiches in Filet-O-Fish Lake™! I like Birdie too, and Grimace---they're all such fun. :)

Oh, and of course we both loved D&D!

My sister and I watched "The Littles", too. One of my most favorite Saturday morning cartoons was Disney's "The Wuzzles". Like FOL season 1, it too only had 13 episodes! Sadly it only had 13 episodes, not 8 more seasons! Maybe Warren thought there were "too many Wuzzles"!

From what I recall, Captain Crook was one of the first McDonaldland characters phased out during the first retooling. They brought in Birdie and the Fry Guys, so they didn't need him anymore, and just gave him a few lines on the phone with his boyf...er, parrot, Matey.

Yes, that was a classic! So ahead of its time. '80s, if you get a chance some time, check out The Pirates of Dark Water, which aired in the early 1990s, and was in many ways a successor to D&D.

I never cared for The Wuzzles; I was too busy watching Gummi Bears on another network.
We also watched Duck Tales, but in our area, it aired on weekday afternoons, rather than on Saturday mornings.

That's awesome! Another thing we three share!
Most people who know what okapis are know the strange story of their discovery by the Western world; they were, as you say, one of the last large animals discovered by scientists, due to being hidden in the jungles of the Congo. Some scientists saw skins, and thought they were dealing with an undiscovered zebra. The truth was far more strange...
BUT.
Here is something you might not know: the ancient Greeks, or some of them, at least, likely knew of Okapis. The Apadana, a great audience hall in Persepolis (then a part of Greece, today in modern Iran), is decorated with frescoes depicting Ethiopians bringing gifts to the Greeks. Among them is this fresco:
https://oi.uchicago.edu/sites/oi.uchicago.edu/files/styles/gallery-image/public/uploads/managed/galleries/2C9_72dpi.png?itok=kwfRKT5v
The identification of this animal as an Okapi is not 100%, but if that is a giraffe, it suspiciously has no spots. The full fresco shows that its neck is too short to be a giraffe, as well.
So it is likely that some in the ancient Western world once knew of Okapis, that knowledge was lost, and then they were rediscovered by the Western world in 1901.
'80sSitcoms 03-14-2019, 09:45 PM ^---wow, that is fascinating. And it makes sense, as the Ethiopians brought these gifts. Now, I also cannot 100% claim that is an okapi (believe me, I learned my "F.A.C.T." lesson from Jo and Mr. Gideon!), but wow, this sure is tempting to say so. If so, how interesting an okapi was (allegedly) presented to ancient Greece, only to vanish from the knowledge of the western world until 1901...
'80sSitcoms 03-14-2019, 09:50 PM Alright, I did my taxes tonight, now it's time to celebrate by kicking back with Disney's "The Black Cauldron"!* (released in summer 1985, between FOL seasons 6 and 7  )
*(not my favorite Disney film, and not one of Disney's best, as it could have been greatly improved, but there are some things I just dang love about it, haha)
RetroGuy2000 03-14-2019, 10:14 PM I also find that fascinating!
'80sSitcoms 03-17-2019, 02:03 AM So I'm kind of fascinated with "The Black Cauldron". I hadn't watched it in a while, and just the fact that it's so "underground" and the blackest sheep of feature films in the Disney canon, and infamously had 12 minutes edited out after it was already made. I've looked up what little there is on the film in my Disney library of books, and have been watching investigations and reviews of it on YouTube. One guy really got to the nitty-gritty with technical specifics and storyboard comparisons and showing scenes with some cut parts "put back in" in the form of storyboard clips with dialogue. Fascinating.
"The Chronicles of Prydain" (the 5-book series "The Black Cauldron" comes from) is such a good series. With today's sophisticated special effects film wizardry, I really hope another studio gets the chance to develop a tv or film property from it.

It was SO great to hear Tracy, Rob, Brice, and Ilene giving commentary on SIX EPISODES (!) of "Mr. Belvedere" *, but this is SO AWESOME to hear Tracy shine on her own in the spotlight! Especially with the host actually being her best friend from the '80s! That so takes it to a whole new level! :woohoo:
*(can you imagine commentaries on FOL DVDs??? The core four on a classic season, and Felice and the Julies on season 1---that would have been AMAAAAAAZIIIIINGGGGGG!)
Lorimar Television 03-18-2019, 10:43 PM *(can you imagine commentaries on FOL DVDs??? The core four on a classic season, and Felice and the Julies on season 1---that would have been AMAAAAAAZIIIIINGGGGGG!)
Ugh that would be sooooo epic
'80sSitcoms 03-18-2019, 10:49 PM This podcast is FASCINATING. I had NO IDEA she danced in a Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial!! Much less with "Carlton" from "The Fresh Prince"! lol---and they said it was all boys, and just 1 white girl and 1 black girl, wow---I've got this cued up to watch later! :D
'80sSitcoms 03-18-2019, 10:53 PM OMG the bullying she went through when her career got started... :(
'80sSitcoms 03-18-2019, 11:00 PM Okay, on a lighter note, I had no idea she did an episode of "Growing Pains"! I watched that while it was on, I'll have to check out which episode that was.
OMG she auditioned for "Facts of Life"!!! WHAAAAAA??????---!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if she auditioned for Kelly?? I hope not!! LOL!!
Whoooaaaa, did you hear her say under her breath that she and Alyssa Milano "don't really get along"?? (and she didn't say "didn't", she said "don't") Awwww, I'm sorry to hear that. I really like WTB. I wonder what the story is... :gossip
Oh neat, it turns out the two " '80s Tracys" became friends, and still are! Tracey Gold and Tracy Wells---cool, I had no idea they were friends back then. :)

I'm so happy we've gotten what we've received over the years, but yes: it would have been so cool to have BOTH Julies (instead of just one; what was with that?) on the DVDs, and of course Felice AND Molly. And of course, to your point, they should have been in the commentaries themselves.
'80sSitcoms 03-18-2019, 11:37 PM And of course, to your point, they should have been in the commentaries themselves.
There WERE no commentaries---what DVD set do YOU have?!??! If yours had cast commentaries during episodes, I want your set!!!

I didn't say there were commentaries. I said they should have been in the commentaries!
'80sSitcoms 03-19-2019, 12:05 AM AH, I see, I was taking "THE" too literally, meaning there were commentaries that existed. You meant it in the figurative "they should have recorded some"! sense, lol.
'80sSitcoms 03-19-2019, 12:12 AM Speaking of the Michael Jackson Pepsi commercials, I don't know if I realized there was more than one---but I Googled, and it was really cool to see young kidsters Tracy and Alfonso in theirs!

Haha maybe a small role?
I noticed that too. It seems Alyssa doesn’t get along with a lot of people.

Wow! Tracy Wells and Shannen Doherty and Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan all couldn't stand her.

Haha! I didn’t know about Holly
RetroGuy2000 03-20-2019, 01:40 AM Haha! I didn’t know about Holly
Holly has always backed Shannen, and they are still very good friends. They even did a travel show together (https://www.travelchannel.com/shows/36-hours/articles/about-the-hosts). Holly appeared alongside Shannen in 2015 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVb8gIxp1VM) to diss Alyssa.
That interview did a lot to restore some of Shannen's reputation, though she still has a lot to answer for, IMO, with what her 90210 and LHOTP co-stars have said about her over the years.
(And speaking of feuds, I'm still gutted about the Christine Lakin/Angela Watson feud, which has now lasted 21 years, but I'm glad we at least got the Lakin/Keanan side of the story).

Yeah, we wouldn’t even know about it without her podcast.
RetroGuy2000 03-20-2019, 03:41 AM Yeah, we wouldn’t even know about it without her podcast.
Yeah, where were the tabloids when this first went down?!

Too busy covering Sasha Mitchell

Good point. That was a big deal at the time.
'80sSitcoms 03-20-2019, 08:16 PM Wow! Tracy Wells and Shannen Doherty and Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan all couldn't stand her.
Well, Tracy said it in a tasteful way/tone. I find this whole thing curious because I had no idea there was any "Hollywood backlash" over grown-up "Samantha Micceli", lol.

The more I hear about Alyssa, the less it sounds like she is liked by her fellow actresses. Which is a shame, because, like you, I loved her as Sam.
But four actresses have now confirmed they don't/didn't get along with her. It can't just be all of them.
