View Full Version : What Was The Last Movie You Saw? (Part 14)
Edward216 04-22-2018, 08:38 PM A quirky little movie that was just released this week on various streaming media and video on demand platforms titled Wanderland. I watched it on Vudu. I watched it because I'm a fan of Drew Powell who's in the TV series Gotham and he's also got a supporting role in this movie. I enjoyed it but it's probably not for everybody. It's not what I usually watch either but I think all of the performances are good and it's interesting to see what's going to happen next. Drew Powell tweeted a few days ago because of popular demand the movie's also gotten a limited release in some New York
City and Los Angeles movie theatres. But it seems like the movie reviews on it are mixed.

Yikes this was bad. Considering the director I should have known, Mark Polonia has been making awful horror films since the early 90's. And Eric Roberts, all you hear is his voice, guess that's all they could afford.
I do like the poster though, has a pulp novel feel.)

Initially delighted to get the job, Lisa soon realizes that all is not as it seems. Intimidated by staff and the psychotic ramblings of the patients, she is further unnerved by apparent supernatural occurrences on the night shift. Her two best friends, Brigitta and Bermuda, Bermuda's sister Sentinel, and the owner of the boarding house, Ms. Ernie, are absolutely devastated. This is not helped by the arrival of an eccentric and crude detective who never takes off his cowboy outfit, Hank Denton. Tensions run high as the girls begin to suspect their friend Margaret may still be alive; and as the detective's behavior becomes more out of control, the house itself may very well be turning on it's residents.

A wife, without first discussing it with her husband, invites a random couple she met out on the road to stay at their seaside house overnight.
The husband reluctantly agrees and then jealousy over each others spouses consumes everyone and leads to a violent ending.
* I thought I'd like this as I like Julian Sands and Julianne Nicholson, but this one just wasn't interesting.
Also, the camera work was annoying as the film mostly features closeups and is very grainy.

So we decided to watch this last night to start off the "unofficial Zombi series". She has seen Dawn Of The Dead multiple times thanks to me, but she's never seen this version. It's my least favorite cut as it cuts out some of my favorite scenes. But I do prefer the soundtrack as it utilizes more of Goblin's score instead of intermixing with 'library tracks' like the Romero cuts.)

Yes, he was hilarious. He was also in the director's other movie Sundown.
About my only complaint with Waxwork II was Deborah Foreman didn't reprise her role. That's what you get when a director and actress date then break up.;)

I haven't seen The Witch yet, but I want to, I just keep not seeing it for whatever reason. haha
It Follows I'm a huge fan of, I love the whole look and sound of the film. It captures the feel of an 80's horror film perfectly, it has an interesting blend of technology from different decades.
The Babadook is really good. Some people complained about the mom and son being annoying, but I thought they were both realistic.
Hush is also good, home invasion type film, the director has made one film I thought was really creepy- Absentia. And he also made Oculus which is a really good supernatural movie.

Except there isn't much in the way of zombies, like the previous two films in the 'Zombi' franchise this film was repackaged as a sequel but wasn't originally filmed as one. This film was originally titled Killing Birds: Raptors and was actually made before both Zombi 3 and 4.

This was re released, back in the 80's as Zombi 4, but unlike the other films of the unofficial 'Zombi' franchise it didn't keep it's Zombi sequel title. It is more known as Hell Of The Living Dead, interestingly it feels the most like a sequel to Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, with the character wearing similar SWAT uniforms and Goblin's score pretty much the same as Dawn.)

JamesG 05-14-2018, 02:16 PM The Rage (2007) on DVD
A mad scientist is experimenting with a serum that causes extreme rage in a shack in the woods and one of his test subjects breaks out.
Vultures then feast on his remains and it turns them into crazed creatures that attack a group of kids at a concert out in the woods.
Stars Wishmaster's Andrew Divoff and porn star turned actress Erin Brown (Misty Mundae). Reggie Bannister has a small role.
I don't know if this was intended to be a comedy, but this was hilarious. The low-budget CGI is pretty awful.

A family of modern day vampires (who call themselves Carpathians) try to assimilate into American life and are tracked down by vampire hunters.
This was a pilot that wasn't picked up by Fox. I spoke with Michelle Johnson about this at Chiller.
She said that Fox and the producers could not agree on the show's budget and Fox chose to go with Aaron Spelling's "Melrose Place" instead. She said that the pilot was way ahead of its time and it's a shame it came out long before the recent vampire craze of Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries/Originals.
She also said that "Blood Ties" was her most favorite thing she's ever done in her career.

- A medical researcher, working with various trees, looks for a cure that will save his dying wife.
- A space traveler, traveling with an aged tree encapsulated within a bubble, moves toward a dying star that's wrapped in a nebula to seek eternity with his love.
I just didn't get into this one. Too much surrealism and metaphor storytelling for my liking.

It's 1941. Robert E. Lee Prewitt has requested Army transfer and has ended up at Schofield in Hawaii. His new captain, Dana Holmes, has heard of his boxing prowess and is keen to get him to represent the company. However, 'Prew' is adamant that he doesn't box anymore, so Captain Holmes gets his subordinates to make his life a living hell. Meanwhile Sergeant Warden starts seeing the captain's wife, who has a history of seeking external relief from a troubled marriage. Prew's friend Maggio has a few altercations with the sadistic stockade Sergeant 'Fatso' Judson, and Prew begins falling in love with social club employee Lorene. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor looms in the distance.

A young couple are terrorized by 3 masked intruders at their remote vacation home.
The story claims to be "based on true events" but director Bryan Bertino says he was inspired by the Manson family murders and from a childhood incident where a stranger came to the door and asked for someone who didn't live there. Bryan Bertino then directed a sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, 10-years later in 2018.

I saw the first one back when it came out and wanted to re-watch it before I started on the rest.
The story takes place in the futuristic dystopian society Panem. The ruling class and wealthy reside in "The Capitol" and the rest of the society is divided into 13 Districts where resources are scarce and the people are poor.
As punishment for a past rebellion, "The Capitol" has arranged an annual fight-to-the-death where one male and one female betw. 12-18 from each District must compete in. Only one victor remains and the winner then lives in a life of luxury. (though they sometimes make an exception if both people left alive are from the same District)
A young girl, who happens to be a skilled archer, volunteers to take her younger sister's place when she gets chosen for the next Hunger Games.
I bought the complete box set at FYE and got the Best Buy exclusive of the original back when it came out.

The sequel takes place a year after the first where Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark have to go on a "Victory Tour" where they pay tribute to the other Districts.
"The Capitol" believes that their willing to die together was due to defiance and not "for love" and they make sure that their love story is the main focus so that threats of rebellion among the people are stopped.
For the new Hunger Games, "The Capitol" has announced that now they will draw names from previous victors which forces Katniss and Peeta to compete again.

JamesG 06-17-2018, 11:00 AM Ocean's 8 (2018) at Theater
The sister of Frank Ocean, George Clooney's character from the Ocean's Trilogy, gets released from prison and recruits an all-female crew to steal a $150M Cartier diamond from the Met Gala.
Elliott Gould and Shaobo Qin are the only actors from the prior Ocean's movies who appear.
JamesG 06-18-2018, 12:14 AM The Wild Bunch (1969) on DVD
The film takes place in 1913 where the traditional American West is dying. A gang of aging outlaws attempt to do "one last job" as they see the times changing. They are pursued by bounty hunters who are lead by one of their former gang members.
The film was controversial upon release for its brutal violence that wasn't seen in many Western films before. It has since been regarded as one of the best Westerns ever made.
Torgo 06-18-2018, 10:51 AM Watched these two with my daughter over the weekend...
Hereditary '18  (After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets.
Excellent atmospheric slow burning creepy film.)
RWD '15  (Two men went searching for ghosts, but they found themselves instead...
Another really good found footage-style film. Love that this film went in a completely different direction than what I was expecting.)
Torgo 06-19-2018, 08:51 AM The Garlock Incident '12 :thumbsdow (On December 16th, 2011, eight people on their way to Las Vegas stopped in the ghost town of Garlock, California. This footage documents what happened.
Pretty much nothing happens for the entire movie, and 2 shacks out in the desert does not a ghost town make.)
Torgo 06-19-2018, 09:07 PM Heidi '16  (After discovering a mysterious doll in an attic, two high school friends are increasingly plagued by a series of disturbing and unexplained events.
I like that when the characters are trying to learn about where the doll came from they mention both Robert The Doll and Annabelle.
In my top 5 of creepy doll flicks, and top 10 creepy found footage-style films.)

Torgo 06-20-2018, 11:16 PM There's Something in the Pilliga '14  (The Pilliga Yowie, - or 'Jingra' - has haunted the Australian outback for centuries, stalking a remote part of New South Wales, where men seldom dare tread, content to keep to itself... until now. Ocker truck driver Jay and his cameraman buddy Dylan journey into the Pilliga National Park with some drunken sheila's they meet in a pub. Things take a sinister turn when a local legend comes out to play - complete with big teeth, sharp claws and a craving for human flesh!
While there's tons of American movies about Bigfoot, there seems to be very few movies about Australia's Bigfoot type creature the Yowie, the only other one I've seen is Spook from 1988, the only other film I know of about the Yowie is Throwback from 2014, still haven't seen that one.)

JamesG 06-22-2018, 03:17 PM Born to be Sold (1981) on DVD
A social worker investigates an illegal adoption ring where people who don't qualify pay troubled young girls for their babies.
TV-film that can be found on one of those countless cheap Region-Free releases.
Torgo 06-22-2018, 10:35 PM Daphne & Velma '18 :thumbsdow (The female future members of Mystery Inc. investigate strange goings-on in their school.
Watched this with my daughter, when she was younger we enjoyed watching the 4 live action Scooby Doo movies together.
This one though seemed to be aimed for a much younger audience than the previous films, almost felt like a made for Disney Channel movie.
The actresses playing Daphne and Velma did a pretty good job, and there were some cute references to the original cartoon.)
