Over the past few days the wife and I have been rewatching some of the Arthur Askey comedies from the 40's.

Band Waggon '40  (A plot involving spies in a haunted castle gives this team of celebrated British wireless comedians plenty of scope for laughs.)

Charley's (Big-Hearted) Aunt '40  (Taking inspiration from a well-known Victorian play, a modern-day prankster poses as a wealthy woman in a ploy to prevent him and his friends from being expelled from college.)

I Thank You '41  (Struggling entertainers who are trying to put on a show pose as servants to wealthy woman in hopes of raising the money.)

Back-Room Boy '42  (A lowly BBC employee pulls a prank at the studio and finds himself transferred to an isolated island where he is to set up a weather station at a lighthouse. A ship carrying a bevy of beautiful models is shipwrecked off the coast and the models wind up on the island. However, when the models begin disappearing, the "back-room boy" investigates and finds a sinister scheme involving spies and Nazi battleships.)

Bees In Paradise '44  (During WWII, four pilots become stranded on a tropical island inhabited by beautiful women.)

Terrified (1963) on DVD

College students are terrified by a crazed masked killer across their small town. A student doing a paper on terror decides to investigate himself.

Was the film film of director Lew Landers who died before the movie's release in 1962. It also features Denver Pyle, (Uncle Jesse) from "The Dukes of Hazzard", as a sheriff.

Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre '14 :thumbsdow (A group of beautiful bikini-clad girls go on a vacation in the swamp of the Florida Everglades, never to return.

Yes, the title is the main reason I watched this. I guess I was hoping for another fun slasher like Bikini Girls On Ice. The girls themselves weren't bad actresses, their dialogue was horrendous though.

The film features Ted Vernon, who also served as one of the producers. Ted also appeared in the excellent 1988 horror film Scarecrows. In that Ted's dog was cast, in Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre, his wife is, his dog was a better actor. Not only that, but we're led to believe she is part of the group of girls despite the fact she's 20 some years older than them.
Another character, some crazy guy who comes out of the swamp, is clearly reading straight from cue cards.

Ted and his wife are also in the reality series on Discovery, South Beach Classics.)

Tourists visiting a Greek archeological site are being abducted and sacrificed by a cult worshiping a minotaur figure. A priest who investigates demonic presences knows something is going on and looks into it.

The cast features Robert Behling, Jane Lyle and Jessica Dublin who went on to star in the infamous cult film Island of Death (1976).

Drive In Massacre '76  (On Blu Ray; Two police detectives try to catch a serial killer who is stalking a rural California drive-in theater, randomly killing people with a sword.

My niece wanted to watch this with me since she bought it for me, I warned her it wasn't her kind of movie, she spent part of the movie with her hands over her eyes. She doesn't like gore.

Co written by George "Buck" Flower, George was in a ton of horror films including Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama , The Fog [he was in several Carpenter flicks], Cheerleader Camp. He also played the Bum in Back To The Future.)

It's really a good movie. Mare Winningham plays Georgia ,a country singer. I never knew that she had such a lovely voice! Not dubbed, it's really her. Jennifer Jason Leigh is an aspiring singer who is Georgia's needy loser sister. Mare Winningham was nominated for best supporting actress in 1995. She didn't win. Both actresses were superb! I highly recommend this film!;)

A woman inherits her deceased aunt's house in a rural small town and goes there to check out the property. She finds that the local townsfolk are very apprehensive towards her and the house itself and she eventually discovers her aunt's dark secrets.

She is also terrorized by a mysterious hearse at night.

Was the feature debut of Christopher McDonald and Chuck Mitchell (from the Porky's films) has a small role as a shopkeeper.

I now finished the Drive-in Cult Classics: Vol. 2 set and this was the best film on this one, IMO.

A psychotherapist and his dominatrix develop a personal relationship during their sessions. She announces she is leaving "the business", but she wants to maintain a relationship w/ him "on the outside".

The relationship complicates their "real world" lives as the lines between fantasy and reality are crossed.

Forget 50 Shades, this is a much more accurate depiction of the complexities involving a BDSM relationship.

There was a brief scene filmed in NYC's famous S&M club Paddles which has been used for other tv/film productions, most recently on Kevin Bacon's Fox series "The Following".

Actress Miho Nikaido also appeared who starred in the Japanese erotic film Tokyo Decadence (1992).

Weekend with the Babysitter (1970) on DVD

An older man gets involved with the teenage babysitter his wife hired. He and his wife have drifted apart due to her drug addiction.

Said to be a "spiritual successor" to The Babysitter since both featured the same actor as the older man (George E. Carey) and were directed by Don Henderson.

Blood Mania (1970) on DVD

A woman w/ an ailing father decides to kill him so that she can inherit his estate to pay off her lover's debt to a blackmailer. Of course, things don't go so smoothly.

A common practice of the time was to film extra scenes so that a movie could air on television w/o the gore and nudity. The extra scenes featured a nurse involved in the blackmailing scheme and there is a DVD release w/ the extra footage.

An interesting fact is that the film's lead actress, Maria De Aragon, was used for some shots in the original Star Wars as Greedo.

Love this one. I've watched it multiple times.

The director on the commentary points out the sleeping cop was one of the kids on Leave It To Beaver, I can't remember if he said he played Beaver's or Wally's friends, but I can't figure out who the actor is, even looked on IMDB.

Oh, and the director says that when he agreed to do the movie he had to include things on a list that Crown International provided, one being a character named Bobby, after hearing that then re watching some of Crown's comedies from the 70's you can see how they most all follow the list.

I also listened to the commentary. Sachs said he was one of Wally's friends and that he was a street sweeper at the time. I also couldn't find out who he is. It's possible it was a tall tale the man told him, like John Holmes as Eddie Haskell.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) on Blu-ray

The film acts as a direct prequel to the original Star Wars (A New Hope) showing how the Rebel Alliance obtained the Death Star plans.

James Earl Jones reprised the voice of Darth Vader and they used CGI for Tarkin and a young Princess Leia.

Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker have a cameo as C-3PO and R2-D2 (which wound up being Baker's final appearance before his death).

Jimmy Smits and Genevieve O'Reilly also have small roles reprising Bail Organa and Mon Mothma from the 2000s prequel trilogy.

Started out good, but then just got stupider and stupider. A day into the zombie outbreak and she's meeting people who act like they've been surviving zombies for a year. Even eating the undead, what? They couldn't find a grocery store to raid? The lead picks up a gun and gets a head shot every time, but then later reads a book on how to shoot guns:crazy: Also love how she goes to the mall and walks out with hand grenades...Plus the CGI blood was annoying.)

Early Frost '82  (Of all the accidents in a city, how many are actually murders? Private detective Mike Hayes, while gathering divorce evidence, finds a corpse. He suspects the death officially listed as an accident, to be more...perhaps murder? But how and who? The more he investigates the more complicated and sinister it becomes. He meets David Prentice who keeps a scrapbook on violent crime and gets further information about Val Meadows, the mistress and learns of her fears. She suspects someone is trying to kill her. A pattern begins to emerge. A photograph showing a number of women, including Val is found. All the women in it have suffered accidents...Somehow they learn that..."EARLY FROST"... can kill. The interesting thing about accidents: It's hard to tell which are murders.

Finally managed to track down a copy, not exactly a lost classic, but a decent little Australian thriller.)

The Penny Dreadful Picture Show '13  (Daffy undead gal Penny Dreadful, her smitten zombie buddy Ned, and lycanthrope Wolfboy relate three tales of terror in an old rundown movie theater: A young couple find themselves being stalked by a lethal jack-in-the-box in "Slash-in-the-Box;" mousy young lady Alice tries to figure out what exactly happened to her last night in "The Morning After;" and a group of friends encounter an eccentric backwoods family after their van breaks down in the middle of nowhere in "The Slaughter House."

Penny Dreadful is a cute character, the wraparound with her has a fun Tim Burton feel.
In The Slaughter House segment, Jeffrey Combs steals the show.
Sadly the boy scout segment shown in the trailer isn't in the movie.)

The film depicts the true story of a psychological experiment done at Stanford University in the early '70s meant to examine the psychological effects of perceived power.

I have heard quite a bit about the actual experiment. I was not sure if it was ever made into a movie. However as good as the movie might be (the acting, the dialogue etc) , I think that the "meaning" of it all is overstated and "mis-stated." I know it is not the actual intent of this thread, but it seems that movie possibly sensationalizes the "experimental findings" for the sake of driving people (the audience) to their emotions which is good for movie-making but can blur reality. or derail the data from the path it actually was headed .
The movie probably makes certain people look like absolute villains and others look like absolute victims, and I think what I am most trying to say is that the outcome is to make it seem as if there is a one-size-fits-all element to what drives people to do what they do, etc.

That is the way it seems to me when I have heard the discussions about this well-known psychological experiment.

I studied this case during my college psychology courses; not extensively but I am familiar w/ the real case.

From what I've seen, this movie went into great detail in real-life facts. They reenacted scenes from the actual experiment footage and the interviews w/ the participants after the experiment was over.

The movie doesn't go into anything about "the results" or why people do what they do. It does show why the experiment was conducted and the conflicts going on within the university's psychology dept. on pulling the plug or letting things go on.

I don't have it, but I know that Brain Twisters is on there.

Oh. For some reason I thought you got it when you found the other sets. It's a pretty good mix of genres- Don't Answer The Phone for horror, The Specialist for Sexploitation, The Van for comedy, Death Machines for Martial Arts, Chain Gang Women for, well I was going to say Women In Prison flicks, but the title is a lie, no chain gang women, it's about two escaped male convicts.

No, the yard sale guy had Volumes 1-3 and the After Dark set instead. That After Dark is pretty much Volume 5.

I mentioned before but on Mill Creek's 32-film set they included the After Dark films instead of Volume 4.

I should pic up the After Dark set, then it would basically complete my Drive In set. I wonder why they included After Dark and not Vol 4?

Pitchfork '16 :thumbsdow (Group of friends gather at a friend's parent's farm for a barn dance and are soon offed one by one by someone who has a pitchfork instead of a hand.

Had some decent ideas, but the silly barn dance musical montage sequence was just a tad too much.)

Snowden (2016) on Blu-ray

The film depicts the true story of controversial figure Edward Snowden who leaked classified NSA intelligence to the public in 2013. He was a former CIA employee and U.S. gov't contractor who felt that the U.S. was abusing its use of power by spying on regular citizens.

He was given political asylum in Russia as he remains a fugitive under the U.S. Espionage Act.

Director Oliver Stone and Joseph Gordon-Levitt met w/ the real Edward Snowden numerous times for the film. He appeared as himself briefly at the end.

Curtains (1983) on Blu-ray

Six actresses show up at the secluded mansion of an oddball director for a casting call. Someone then shows up wearing an old lady mask and goes after them.

There is a great documentary here on the film's troubled production and how its word-of-mouth made it a late-night classic. Actor Michael Wincott appears in the film briefly as his role got cut way shorter during the production.
