And the early SandForce woes deterred me. Of course, hard drives fail too. But for some reason I've always been shockingly lucky with them. I've had a total of one drive actually fail on me (iirc...not counting the one I killed by dropping) and the one in question I was able to get most data from. I've migrated to 15K SCSI (SAS) Seagate Savvios. The poor man's SSD, I suppose (for laptop's I'm still rocking good ole' 7200RPM - ha!).

I have to say TechReport's "SSD Endurance Test" is forcing me to reconsider. It seems almost impossible to actually write-wear a drive out. I'm told the "feeling" is orders of magnitudes better than even the fastest enterprise hard drives so..

ive had dozens of hard drives fail on me - i used to take it a lot more seriously, like saying I'd never buy another Western Digital, but statistically a certain number of them are just going to fail.

robyn wanted a new computer, but I upgraded her video card, put win7 on one SSD and her Photoshop alone on a second SSD and moved all her data and her other programs to her old hard drive and it is just ridiculous how much faster it is now.

Well the 15K drives only come in SAS or they did when I last looked. It's always been that way I think - the 15K drives used to come in parallel SCSI exclusively too. My understanding has always been that the advantages of SCSI over ATA largely dissipated with Serial ATA (I suppose Ultra 320 was still faster than SATA/150) but command queuing was something that SCSI had back in the early 90's that ATA never really got. Well there was TCQ with ATA-4 but no one used that as far as I can tell. There are supposedly other benefits like better error correction but they don't tend to come into play on a day to day basis (they don't for me).

I am amazed at how much better SCSI was for ATA back in the 90's. I didn't really realize until I started digging into it when moving to SATA and then SAS. In comparison ATA was trash. My Windows 95 could have run much faster!

Wal-Mart is awesome for like 3 in the morning because nothing else is open and you have an entire store of everything you can wander around in aimlessly and gawk at with no one else but you and the poor employees who for some reason are forced to be there to cater to you.

Plus they have food. Aside from Harris Teeter it's the only 24 hour grocery store here. Wegmans and Giant close at midnight. Not sure about Safeway.

Never underestimate the value of food at any time!

You might be able to pull it off in like a Sears where they have tents already set up. :lol:

It won't be long before SAS is worse than SATA for SSDs. With an SSD, since you're going to approach the data limit which you won't with a hard drive aside from occasional bursts, you're going to be better off when SATA Express comes around than with SAS which is still at 6Gbps. I'm guessing they'll extend that to SAS too. I heard rumblings of SAS 9Gb/s at one point but I haven't heard any newer version in some time.

It won't be long before SAS is worse than SATA for SSDs. With an SSD, since you're going to approach the data limit which you won't with a hard drive aside from occasional bursts, you're going to be better off when SATA Express comes around than with SAS which is still at 6Gbps. I'm guessing they'll extend that to SAS too. I heard rumblings of SAS 9Gb/s at one point but I haven't heard any newer version in some time.
Aren't they coming out with some 10 Gb/s USB 4.0 (or 3.1 or something) next year? I'm starting to feel like this theoretical speed stuff is kind of pointless because there aren't even many things you could achieve that kind of speed with. :lol:

Yeah, it's a midwest type thing. I think Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and so on.

I love self-checkout because not only that, but most people are too lazy to even attempt to ring their own stuff up so the lines are way shorter there. Although, it DOES get infuriating sometimes like this time last week when some old lady kept trying to scan some balogna for literally 15 minutes before some worker came up and showed her that the bar code was on the opposite side of the package. :mad: :lol:

Yeah, alot of Southern Mainers tend to have that attitude when it comes to "outsiders". They really don't even care for those of us from Northern Maine, where it's really kind of like an entirely different state. They've actually talked about splitting Maine in half before but it never really went anywhere.
They've wanted to do that with Michigan too for years, create a new state for the Upper Peninsula and rename it "Superior" which sounds arrogant, but is actually a reference to Lake Superior, which shapes the northern half of the state and is one of, if not the largest, freshwater lakes in the world.

I know politically the southern portion is more liberal but it also has the population base so "As goes Portland, so goes Maine". Alot of places are like that though, Oregon and Washington State come to mind (Seattle and Portland - another Portland! and everyone else).

I also - maybe it's from growing up in what used to be the south but ...I don't think I saw one person in Maine who wasn't white. And coming from where we have everyone it was like THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT? I guess you have to live there.

But like I said I really DID like the area and I can't say the people weren't nice. They definitely were - just confused as to why someone from out of town would be there.

Also there was this Chinese restaurant that had some of the best food I've ever had. mmm. Wait I've eaten...alot...

Aroostook. There's a fairly large (though still small compared to the white population) amount of Native Americans around here. I'm actually part Native American myself.

These past two years have been very painful. I always did my best to further the interests of the Borg and Steven Sinofsky repaid me by telling me to punch tiles :(.

I have stuck with Windows 7 on my primary PC after playing with 8 which merely fomented h8. I still use IE alot, but it's all the way up to version 11 now! I keep Firefox around as a back-up. With Adblock finally on IE I haven't had much problem. I'm informed that I'm missing out on syncing with the cloud my bookmarks but I'm too paranoid for that anyway so..

I also still use Bing, which I genuinely believe is a decent search engine, though I see they've uglified its logo along with their continual push to remove colors, gradients, and 3-dimensional shapes from all branding. Which is why I can't stomach Office 2013. It's too god-awful ugly for my eyes, so I still use 2010.

I always did think the Metro styling worked well on small form factors, so I bought into Windows Phone and still use one, along with an astonishing 6% of Americans. I've played around with Android and wasn't that impressed.

I actually thought iOS/iPhone was decent, but then Apple decided to fuglify it with version 7, so that will keep me away.

I gotta admit, I'm kinda shocked IE still is even as popular as it is. For a while there it seemed like Firefox was totally going to leave it in the dust, but now I guess Chrome is the browser of the hour.
i am sooo pissed off at the firefox development team - they are literally just copying everything chrome does now and not even trying to fix the major bugs, memory leaks and basic problems associated with trying to to mimic a major competitor on the surface without changing the underlying architecture

My Grandmother will go off on you, but in the (amusingly patronizing) opposite way. Basically, Hispanic people work so hard and white people have become lazy and it irks her.

I still use it on some computers at school because they don't allow you to install 3rd-party applications on there, that's about it. Other than that, I am a Firefox man.

Basically I think it comes down to the fact that it's the default IE browser and it no longer sucks. 6 was around so long that it sucked (I guess you could argue it sucked in 2001, but in 2001 it wasn't very apparant and it also worked pretty well on even old hardware*). By 2005, 6 was awful. Then 7 and 8 were catch-up. It wasn't really until 9 that IE achieved some sort of parity - performance was at or better at release than Firefox and Chrome, it had the native GPU acceleration, etc. They added a new JAvaScript engine which they called Chakra. 10 added inline spell-check (finally!) and performance tweaks which again brought it to near parity with the competition. 11 brings you basically nothing unless you are on Windows 8. Well except for performance increases. I actually think 11 was at or ahead of Chrome at release.

Basically it's "good enough" again. So the bleeding stopped.

My own analysis, anyway. Alternately people are just in love with the pretty E, but I doubt it!

As for what happened to Firefox, that is kind of puzzling to me. It not only never beat IE, it leveled off and ended up getting surpassed by Chrome. I've played with the latest Firefox builds. I don't see what people dislike about it. It still has the biggest extensions library. But it's not new and cool anymore, I guess.

Oh and Opera committed suicide - 12 is the last regular version. They're now using the Chrome back-end and all extensions have been rendered incompatible. They also stripped out basically everything that made Opera Opera. As of last check, the "new" Opera iddn't even have bookmarks (!).

*I distinctly remember browsing using IE6 on a 486/66 w/ 64MB of RAM & NT 4.0, circa 2001-ish. And I recall it not feeling hideously painful. It's amazing to imagine a piece of code that was designed to be palatable on a 486 that has stretched into 2013. Which is also of course why it's so far behind. (Still #1 in China though)

I went from Netscape 4 to IE5, then IE6, then to Mozilla 1.7 circa 2003ish, then Firefox when it hit 1.0, then I started getting back into IE when 7 came out. Pale Moon saddens me. If you want an optomized version, you're probably using old hardware, right? But PaleMoon dropped support for pre-SSE2 CPUs. So what's the point? If you're on a state of the art CPU, why not use WaterFox, which is 64-bit?

I'm not a big gamer, but I do enjoy the other two things you mentioned.

I am becoming convinced there will never be another game that will suck me into it like Quake 3 and then Wolf did. Wolf 2009 was a butchered POS. And Call of Duty seems to be getting dumbed down more and more, if it ever really wasn't.

Also developers seem to be getting more hostile to PC gaming. There are alot fewer dedicated server binaries now. Want one? Too bad! Pony up for a hosted one and you can't do any modding because there's no SDK. And if you did, we wouldn't rank you anyway.

And...ranking is everything right? Stats FTW!

I always liked playing sports as a kid and still would if I had anyone to play them with. Watching them just never interested me, I get too ADD seeing so many people on my screen and whatnot.

Wrestling is different cause that's more entertainment than sport and that's what attracted me as a kid, the larger than life characters. Though I have really come to appreciate the athletic aspect of it over the years.

TBH, 7 is just a polished service pack on Vista. Which I'm guessing you know. I waited for about two years before moving to 7 because I didn't see the point. (yes the "new" taskbar is nice, but it's not crucial).
