Default Naomi's comebacks in earlier seasons

Namoi was mostly written as somewhat of a flake, but I liked in the earlier seasons how she always had a good comeback whenever anyone else in the family slammed her. As the show went on into the syndication era, anytime someone slammed her, instead of firing back, she just rolled her eyes and didn't reply usually. I always thought that was too bad because she had some great comebacks in the earlier seasons -

NAOMI: Well we might not be the smartest people in the world, Ellen but we are not hypocrites!

ELLEN: Vinton will you see to your wife, her muzzle has slipped again.

NAOMI: Now I would watch your tone, young lady. Next year we might just be going to the cemetary on YOUR birthday.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

MAMA: You're going to set my hair with beer?!?!?

NAOMI: I'm going to set your hair on fire if you don't stop interupting me!!!!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------

NAOMI: Now listen here, Helmet hair! Everyone in this family has been trying to teach this old dog a new trick!

ELLEN: I would beg you not to refer to my mother as dog just because tricks don't come as easily to her as they do to you!

NAOMI: I'm going to punch your teeth out, Ellen! Pass them over!!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

NAOMI: Well you know I actually envy you with all that time on your hands. With me it's always rush, rush, rush, out in the working world.

EUNICE: Well us uncreative housewives who just lie around all day munching on bon-bons sure do envy you glamorous super market checkers. Oh where oh where did I go wrong!?

NAOMI: Should I start with that hairdo and work my way down?

Naomi was horrified of Mama by the later seasons. Notice how she did insult her, just behind her back. Notice that Naomi seemed to diss Iola all the time, and if Iola insulted her, she would have a comeback for her. I don't think anyone talked back to Mama in the syndicated episodes!

Naomi was certainly more assertive in the NBC episodes. In the syndicated episodes, about the only one she would back talk would be Iola, probably because she knows Iola likes Vint.

She did talk back to Mama in some syndicated episodes. A lot of times in season 5 if I remember correctly.

I don't think it's that at all. I think Naomi had finally lived with Mama long enough that she---like Vint---just eventually gave up and realized life was easier living under the same roof with her if they just "went with the flow".

One of my grandmothers is a lot like Mama, and believe me, it's a lot easier to just be quiet and "get along" than try to argue anything! lol

Iola: "I am a home economics major, Naomi. I think I know how to lay a buffet!"
Naomi: "I bet that's the only thing!"

Here's a comeback from Naomi that Mama doesn't even catch(luckily for Naomi!):
Bubba: "On your what?"
Mama: (to Bubba) "...My gusset! It's part of the sleeve of the dress I'm making."
Naomi: "Dress? I thought you were making a bedspread!"

The look on Naomi's face after she realizes that Mama didn't catch her little insult is pretty funny!
