Default My parent's experience with "Lost in Translation"

My parents rented Lost in Translation last week. They were expecting a really good film. After all, it was nominated for 4 Academy Awards - Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Motion Picture. They watched it and when I asked them how they liked it, I got a stunning response: they hated it. They said that it was not only boring and terrible but that it was really overrated. One would think that a film nominated for 4 of the 5 major Oscars would be excellent quality but my parents didn't think that was the case with this film at least with them. I caught snippets of it but nothing happened in it.

It was an interesting experience for them and even more amazing what they thought of it. I'd thought I'd make this the "Lost in Translation Thread." If anyone has seen this movie, what did you think of it?

I loved it.

My parents bought it from Costco the day it came out because they heard so many rave reviews of it from me, but they hated it. Oh well. Because they disliked it, I got myself a free copy of a great movie!

I was thinking of renting it, because I think Scarlett Johansson is a fairly decent actress... a few of my friends hated the movie though, so I'm deciding if I should bother or not.

When was Lost in Translation released in the US? The UK only got it last month in cinemas! It looks like an interesting film- unfortunately the only cinema in the whole town only shows big sure-fire moneymakers, action films, superhero films etc.

I liked it a lot, but didn't love it. I think Billy Murray delivered a great performance.

I thought it was good, not great, but good. I saw it in the theatres with my mom because she really wanted to see it. She absolutely loved Bill Murray in it and I love Scarlett Johansson. They both were great together! So, what movies do your parents consider to be good if they hated this one?

This is one of those movies that you either love or hate.

Me? I love it. It might even be my #1 movie. One of my teachers saw it with her husband, daughter and daughter's boyfriend (same night as me actually) and hated it but I liked it so much I bought the DVD (2 days later!).

I live in a dorm room w/ two other people and we are forced to avoid talking about that movie because one of my room mates thought it was the best movie of the year and was this incredible piece of cinematic art while the other was totally unmoved and thought it was incredibly boring. I agree w/ Janice though--watchable because of Bill Murray's performance.

Lacey and I seen it in the theater, and neither of us liked it. We dubbed it "lost in my memory" for we had completely forgotten that we had seen it when we were reviewing the movies we had viewed that month. It was forgettable.

Some people can't handle crictically artistic movies. I mean, Oscar isn't all about mainstream, its those indepth movies. Like last year, My dad rented About Schmidt and hated it, but my grandparents raved about it, because my dad likes more mainstream stuff and my grandparents like independent films.

I still wanna see Lost in Translation.

It wasn't a bad movie but it wasn't a blow-you-away movie watching experience either.

Scarlett Johansson's star will definitely shine after this movie.
