Well, let's see-- I would want someone to warn me not to read it, so I thought you all should have the chance for that as well! Read if you dare, but don't say I didn't warn ya!

Disclaimer to DJL and to the VERY attractive Kenny Chesney, whose song I used. Don't be hatin, everyone!

Nate sat in the lonely bar, tossing another one back. He finished his drink and turned to the barkeep, “Hit me again,” he muttered and held his glass out.

The bartender shook his head no. “I’m sorry, Sir, but you’ve had the limit; I can’t give you anymore. Should I call a cab for you?”

Nate shook his head. “No, someone’s picking me up,” he lied and stood up. He swaggered to his car and sat down in it. He found the cd they’d made together and placed it into the cd player.

“Little Moments” gently filled the car, and Nate started to slightly cry as he turned on the windshield wipers. The rain had picked up, and it was difficult for him to see as he pulled into the lane to go home.

It was two months that night; two months since their first kiss. That steamy, sultry kiss that they’d shared in the hospital waiting room that afternoon while waiting on the clearance of their captain’s surgery.

Nate signaled into the left lane to pass and met bright oncoming lights. He swerved back into the right lane, barely missing the guardrail on that side. “Dammit,” he muttered and switched to the next track on the cd.

All he could see was his dreams going up in smoke

He cursed, that song seemed to follow him tonight, and turned the sound system on low. He continued thinking of his best friend; the friend that had left him three days ago
without warning. The one that had shared so much with him but then escaped his presence before she could get hurt.

His lover. The one he’d given everything to; his body, his soul, and his mind were now owned by her. He didn’t know how to get them back and if he ever would. “Damn her!” he shouted suddenly and sped up, just wanting to go home and drink some more.

All of a sudden, he hit a large collection of water, hydroplaning and swerved into the other lane. The other lane that contained a man driving a tow truck home to be with his family. Nate corrected the wheel, but it was too late; contact was made.

Nate closed his eyes, knowing the worst was near, and held on dearly to the first thing he could grab a hold of-- a picture of him and his best friend that had been placed by his speedometer. He whispered,
There goes my life..
Baby, goodbye
A car raced to the bar that he’d been seen at last. She was hoping he’d still be there; she’d realized what a fool she’d been and promised herself to never be afraid again. At least,
not of him. He cared about her so much, and she couldn’t live without him.

The radio played softly in the background:

Momma's waiting to tuck her in,
As she fumbles up those stairs.
She smiles back at him dragging that teddy bear.
Sleep tight, blue eyes and bouncin' curls.

She randomly shivered at hearing those lyrics but smiled. She could picture him with their daughter, looking after her just the way the man in the song was. She increased her speed, wanting to get to that bar before it was too late.

A man in front of her quickly slammed on his brakes. “*******!” she shouted and swerved to avoid hitting him. She continued to cuss at him until she’d looked ahead and saw the lights. A wreck had occurred, and the traffic was backed up.
She sighed, annoyed at yet another obstacle that stood in between him and her. She drummed her fingers on the stirring wheel as the traffic moved every once in awhile, and she turned the station to a more fast paced song.

As she got up to the accident, she looked at the involved cars and unconsciously gagged. His car was there; ‘maybe he’d just stopped to help and parked like an idiot,’ she thought
to herself.

She pulled over beside his car and looked at in horror. He was involved in the accident she found out and jumped out of her car.

“Ma’am, I’m sorry this is a police investigation, I’m afraid you’ll have to......”

“I’m a cop!” she shouted and held out the badge that she had planned to turn into Kate just the night before but decided she wasn’t 100% positive yet.

She ran to the car and squeezed her way in between the EMTs and rescue crew. Nate’s door had been ripped open, and they were carrying his body out. His head was gashed, and blood had ran all over.

“Excuse me, I need up there!” she shouted.

An EMT looked up and saw her. “Oh my gosh, you’re the woman in the picture,” he muttered.

“What are you talking about?” she asked him but was silenced when he handed her a picture with bloodstains on it. She looked at it, fighting back tears, and questioned, “Where did you find this?”

He sighed. “He was gripping onto it when we found his body,” the man said sadly.

“What do you mean his body? He’s going to be alright, isn’t he?”

The man inhaled deeply. “I’m so sorry, ma’am; we did the best we could, but there was nothing we could do. His BAC level was .28, and he hit his head first. I don’t know why
he was driving when he was so intoxicated, but he just made the worst mistake of his life,” he paused and touched her shoulder. Before walking away, he murmured, “I’m so
sorry.”

She watched the man leave her and tend to the scene. She started to cry hysterically and stood there, not knowing what to do with herself. She was in a daze when she heard
something familiar, but it was the same words over and over.

She walked to his car and listened. Their cd was playing, but it was stuck. The sudden impact of the crash had jarred the cd player, and it continued playing two lines over and
over.

There goes my everything,
Baby...goodbye.

Candace DeLorenzo wiped the tears that streamed down her face and shut the cd player off, so she could take the cd with her. She ejected it and held it in her hands, leaving the
car for the last time. She clung the cd to her heart as she walked back to her car, sat down, and bawled hysterically.

That was the saddest thing I have ever read in my entire life!!!

yes...*starts crying again*...but "texas plates" came on after it and that cheered me up some...but now Reba M. is on...and SHE always depresses me..so Im all sad again....
