Shelly had no longing for Frasier
HOLLYWOOD - Kelsey Grammer might never have become a TV star if Cheers producers had listened to Shelley Long. Grammer says Long was opposed to his Frasier character joining the Cheers cast. "Shelley didn't want Frasier in the show," he says. "She took every opportunity to make that clear. She wasn't evil, she was only capable of seeing things from one perspective - her own." Long played Diane on the series. |

well to add to to what you said, her main argument was "Why have two intellectuals in the bar?" I think that combined with Nick's death is what made Shelley leave. Well not the fact that Kelsey stayed, just the fact that she lost the campaign to get rid of him. also I believe your excerpt is from an ET interview? I think I may have it on tape. |

well I kind of agree with her, if they weren't dating, I didn't like Frasier in the bar, that is until she left. I agree with her when she said that "One intellectual in the bar was enough"

I thought Frasier was one of the best characters!
And IMO.... the series was finally "perfect" when he came. Rebound Parts 1&2 are some of my favorite episodes. I agree that he was better after they broke up.... the resentment and hatred for Diane made him even funnier. |

I liked him in the bar from the sixth season on, because he kind of filled Diane shoes when making long-winded speeches...and well the only person with a shred of morality left in the bar.

I remember reading the intellectual thing, but it also came down to the same situation in the Rhea/Jay Thomas thing: one was being outshined by the other. Perlman asked that Eddie be dropped cuz he was emerging as a favorite over Carla, the same going for Long and Grammer. Grammer was just hilarious with his uptight, brainy stuff and Long felt threatened.

Please no-one hate on Shelly as Cheers had a rocky first season ratings and wouldn't have survived without Shelley (Ted Danson's words)
They were both good characters i prefer Diane but it was right that she left has her stories had been told. |

Sam: You know, you know I always wanted to pop you one, maybe this is my lucky day huh? Diane: You disgust me, I hate you. Sam: Are you as turned on as I am? Diane: More. |
