Lightbulb Character Discussion - Maddie Hayes

Yet another wonderful character discussion by Lauren.

In my television experience, I have always found Maddie Hayes to be one of the most well-developed characters I’ve ever seen. There was such a mixture of feelings and personalities that would be revealed as the years went on and the character progressed.

When she first walked into the Blue Moon Detective Agency, Maddie stunned the employees with her beauty…exactly what she didn't want to do. As we later discover, Maddie’s main goal in life is to be seen for who she is, not what she looks like. She needed people in her life who would appreciate her intelligence and business sense, not just her appearance.

And isn’t is ironic how she falls for a guy whose posture toward beautiful women is just the opposite of what she believes?

another success at character progression. she went form a money hungry (as she was broke) person to a real detective. still searching for what was before her along. maddie had a few hangups, but she also gave in at times to make some great moments.
but the office antics were too much for her to handle. keep her busy.

I have slight problems with the character of Maddie.... In the first 3 series, I love the way they develop her character from ice princess to a well rounded person with hang ups as well as good bits. However, for much of series 4 and 5, I think Maddie becomes almost a caricature of herself. This is nothing to do with Cybill's acting ability, as often the only reason we suspend our disbelief with the really odd things Maddie does in the later epi's is due to Cybill's talent and understanding of the character.

In the earlier epis, Maddie is warm, tactile, and often volatile. She likes the attention Dave gives her, almost in spite of herself. She grows as a person, realising that he does have a soul underneath his arrogant exterior. I love Maddie in epi's like Money Talks Maddie Walks, especially in the casino...

I love most of all, the real sense with Maddie that she's constantly fighting her feelings for David, and how she's afraid of the intensity of her feelings for him. (like in 'To Heiress Human').

She wants to be seen as more than a pretty face, and is then shocked when David falls for her..and not just for her looks. He sees the person she really is inside, and perhaps that's what scares her so much.

Wow, this is an essay!!!! Sorry if I've gone on too long everyone!
