Thumbs down Suspended for saying "Hell"????

This is one of the most outrageous punishments I have ever heard of for something as minor as this.

_________________________________________
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A second-grade girl from Pittsburgh was suspended this week from her public elementary school for saying the word "hell" to a boy in her class.

But 7-year-old Brandy McKenith says she was only warning the boy about the eternal comeuppance he could face for saying: "I swear to God."

"I said, 'You're going to go to hell for swearing to God,"' Brandy was quoted as saying in an article that appeared on the Web site of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review on Wednesday.

School officials were unavailable for comment. A Pittsburgh Public Schools spokeswoman told the newspaper that the student code prohibits profanity but does not provide a clear definition of what profanity is.

The girl's parents, who said they believed their daughter's version of the story, were flabbergasted by the suspension and complained to the school principal.

"Kids are bringing guns and knives to school. ... They've got dope. And we're worried about 'hell'?" said her father, Wayne McKenith.

Meanwhile, the incident drew the attention of civil liberties experts as far away as New York.

"There was no threat and the word was being used in its intended way, not in a vulgar manner," civil liberties attorney Christopher Murray said in a statement distributed by his New York law firm.

That is stupid, especially since many kids do much, much worse. And the fact that she was using it for what the real definition makes it even more crazy.

That's so stupid...especially since she's only 7. Kids my age say much worse in school and the teachers usually just let it go...and plus she wasn't even using it as swear word.

Taking it off from Brian's post...it sounds like she comes from a religious family, and it's very apparent she believes in God. She didn't come to school wearing nothing. That's dumb.

Some words? I am in a class with some seniors first period, and they say every cuz word in the book, and the teachers never even say a word to them. Its like that with my class too though, but its usually just the guys trying to act all cool.

Jesus, my TEACHERS say hell and nothing happens. I mean, in theatre, when we read a play, we say every single swear word (except f***) but I mean, we even say s***... it's part of the play. No one cares.

This sounds like something that would've happened in my old high school. You can bully someone without worrying about the teachers giving a damn, you can curse until your face turns blue while beating the crap out of each other... but you say 'hell' and all of a sudden "Hey! Something needs to be done about this. And fast."

In my highschool it always felt like I was in an R rated movie. Some of the language was really bad. This child didn't even use it as a verb.

Oh I hear ya, Sonny. Especially when a nasty fight broke out, that's when you really heard it.

This is totally idiotic! There is no more common sense in the public school discipline policies! This is like the Zero Tolerance weapons policy that has run amuck in many schools - kids getting suspended for bringing a plastic knife to cut their food or a tiny GI Joe gun!
