This week, we are finding out what a lot of us knew all along, is that NFL Commissinor Paul Tagliabue is a dictator. He tells people outside of the NFL how to run business.
First, Janet Jackson withdraws from the Grammys, eventhough it would have gotten great ratings. I heard in the paper that the NFL was pressuring CBS to ban Jackson from the Grammys. Either they caved (like they did to the right wing when they canceled "The Reagons, CBS is such a wussy network) or Janet herself saved them the trouble and choise not to appear at the Grammy's as the Jackson camp clamed. Second, ESPN canceled their hit show "Playmakers", because the NFL didn't like it. Who the hell does Paul Tagliabue think he is, telling Networks what shows to put on? Also Maurice Cluaret won his lawsuit to be elgibale for the draft today. I bet nobody drafts him because of pressure by Paul Tagliabue. Add that with the NFL strict dresscode, and the plan to crack down on post N zone celebration. |

Blame the networks, they aren't obligated to listen to Tagliabue.

Yeah, I blame the networks for caving in, but that does not change the fact that Tagliabue and the NFL are very controling, and does know when to let people run their own business.

The networks feel the pressure of the NFL because the NFL can go anywhere after the contracts expire with each one.
They can go to cable, pay-per-view, the NFL channel. Wherever they want. That is why the networks play nice. As far as Claret goes, you're nuts if you think any team won't draft him because how Tagliabue feels. You underestimate the owners and players association. They won't draft him if they think he can't play. |

Tagliubu had nothing to do with the Grammy Awards. As for playmakers most of the NFL players didn't like it anyway and the NFL is ESPN's most important product so they didn't have much choice.
