Good for him! We won't know if "Friends" stands up to any of those series until it's over. Will it achieve "legend" status??

haha exactly, it would be hilarious if it's on Nick at Nite in five years (knowing them probably sooner) and it's a huge flop. Or maybe it will become a classic. Becker I think will be rediscovered by a later audience and reruns will make it more popular than when it was on.

Friends can be funny, but comparing it to a classic like Cheers is just plain silly.

Yeah" It was so funny when he started to feel sick on phoebe's lap. But I must say that I like friends just as much as I like Cheers and it is just as good so people shouldn't criticize it.

Just to be clear: The reason I think that the comparison between "Friends" and "Cheers" is ludicrous is NOT because I don't think "Friends" is good. I like it, and even if I didn't, my roommate would kill me for bashing it. The reason the comparison is slightly insulting is that "Cheers" (and certainly "I Love Lucy," but I'm using the example of "Cheers" for obvious reasons) was/is innovative in a way that "Friends" is simply not. For example, the romantic comedy writing at the time was completely new for a sitcom. It was almost better suited to cinema, and any television analyst will say that it was unheard of at the time to draw a central relationship out that long, but it set the standard for shows to follow (think "Who's the Boss?" or even Ross and Rachel on "Friends"). Also, the work place/hang out combo hadn't been seen completely independent of home-life yet (except in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show"). Finally, the technical aspects stood out as well. If you really look at the first two seasons, the cinematography is incredible. These are things that modern shows just don't have. They recombine and rework pre-established patterns. "Friends" is so good because it does this successfully, but it doesn't "pave the way" for other shows or completely change the standard in the way that "Lucy" did for female comedians, "Seinfeld" did for subject matter, or "Cheers" did in changing standards for an ensemble show.

Very well put.

Ill admit.... Friends is good show.
I just happen not to like it.... and think that it gets WAY more attention than it deserves.

I think there are lots of sitcoms that came out with "Friends" that are about the same, but "Friends" blew up they got lucky. I'm not saying "Friends" is bad or anything I don't watch it so I wouldn't know. Comparing "Cheers" to "Friends" is just well I dunno, but I wouldnt'.
