There are a lot of albums from the '60s that are currently only available in stereo. That's a shame, because in the '60s, mixing a mono rock album was an art form in itself.
It is said that The Beatles and George Martin spent a week and a half making the mono mix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, making sure that everything was just right. After that was over, The Beatles left and George Martin and Geoff Emerick spent just under two days making the stereo mix we're currently familiar with on CD. The following albums should always be listened to in mono: The Beatles - Revolver The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (everyone needs to hear the mono mix; simply amazing) The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (the 1996 stereo mix is interesting, but inferior) The Rolling Stones - Aftermath The Who - My Generation Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan I have the Beatles' EP Collection boxed set, which was released on CD in 1992 and is the best The Beatles have ever sounded on CD (no noise reduction or maximization whatsoever; just good flat transfers), and the whole thing is in mono, save for a stereo mix of the original UK Magical Mystery Tour EP and a bonus disc containing stereo mixes of "The Inner Light," "Baby You're A Rich Man," "She's A Woman," and "This Boy." The set contains 54 wonderful mono mixes of Beatles songs, many of which are otherwise only available in stereo on CD. Of note is the fact that "Drive My Car" kicks your ass in mono, while hearing the smooth sound of the mono "Yesterday" mix makes you realize why it's such a great song. Are there any other mono enthusiasts here? |
