I realize that the show Murphy Brown was mentioned a couple of times during the show's run. Somebody told me it was an inside joke because it competed against Seinfeld during its prime. Is that true?

Murphy Brown was on Monday's. Besides, if it was Seinfeld's main competitor, I doubt that CBS would allow Candice Bergen aka Murphy Brown appear on the show.
