Have there been any developments in the murders of a mystery couple found in North Carolina in August 1976? The bodies of an unknown male and an unknown female were found in Sumter county, North Carolina. The female in her early 20s and the male in his mid 20s were shot several times by an unknown perpetrator or perpetrators. The Sumter county Police Department believed the couple were affluent because the female wore expensive looking jewellery and the male wore a Bulova wrist watch and had elaborate dental work.

It was profiled in early 1995, but briefly. The profile, if I remember correctly, aired in conjunction with an unrelated case about an unidentified teenage girl who, in 1987, was discovered dead in California under mysterious circumstances.

The couple in question were, by the way, discovered in South Carolina (not North Carolina).

Thanks for the crimelibrary link, Thracian. I really don't understand why Unsolved Mysteries downplayed this case. If memory serves, it was relegated to a brief blurb at the end of a segment on a young girl who apparently fell to her death near San Diego after being a few dollars short of full cab fare to reach her destination. The linked article mentions that the county coroner tried for years to get a segment on UM.

The coroner's photos look much different than the sketches, particularly of the woman. Her face is much broader than the depiction. They do have the look of foreigners, but difficult to pinpoint a precise origin.

Also, I thought the couple was found shot to death in a car. But the crime scene photo shows them lying near the road, and no mention of a car. The article implies they could have been hitchhikers and may have been seen at a local fruit stand shortly before the murders.

Very impressive that the South Carolina locals have done so much, keeping the story alive plus taking care of the gravesites for all these decades.

Bizarre. I hadn't looked at this case in a couple of years, probably since my post above in this thread. Then tonight I was scanning the article after seeing a thread at Websleuths, and noticed it was the 30th anniversary of this crime, which happened on August 9, 1976:

"Months after the homicide, an employee of KOA campgrounds near Santee, S.C., called authorities, believing he had earlier made friends with the dead man, who went by the name “Jock,” according to documents in the case file.

Jock, or more likely, Jacques, stayed a few days at the campgrounds with his young female companion, then left for Florida. He and his girlfriend stopped at the campgrounds again on their way back.

The two men became friends. While shooting pool, Jacque told the KOA worker he was the son of a prominent doctor in Canada who had disowned him for giving up on his own career in medicine. He was taking a vacation of sorts, traveling the country aimlessly.

Before leaving, he tried to pawn an expensive ring to the employee, who later told authorities that the ring had looked a lot like the one found on the mystery man.

Inside his pocket was a book of Grants Truck Stop matches, which could only be found in Idaho, New Mexico and Nebraska. Authorities think Jacques passed through these places on his travels."
