Default Charles's Mom

I was wondering what some of you out there think of the character of Lillian, Charles's mother? I never really liked her and could never understand why the producers felt that they needed
the character. One of the things that was great about the Pembroke episodes and the early Powell episodes was that there was a sense of family. Charles became the older brother of Lila, Douglas and Jason/Sarah, Jamie and Adam not only because he looked out for them and lived in the same house as them but because he was also away from his own parents(in the Pembroke season, his father was alive) and the Pembrokes and Powells became his family. I think the sense of family disappeared in later episodes not only because Mr. Powell was no longer in most of the episodes, but because Charles had his own real family (his mother) living near by.

I liked her. She was also Scott Baio's mom on "Happy Days". It's kind of weird, though, how Mrs. Powell disappeared after Lillian came on board. Didn't they like each other???

Default Mrs. Powell

I believe that Sandra Kerns, who played Mrs. Powell, had a baby sometime during the third year and decided to semi-retire from acting. She was only in one episode during year four and two or three during year five. In fact, she wasn't even in the last episode. It was really to bad when she stopped appearing regularly because the series lost the whole family atmosphere that it had in years one, two and most of three. The whole concept of the series was about a college boy who moves in with the Pembroke family to watch Lila, Jason and Douglas while Jill and Stan worked. The kids became Charles's younger siblings while Mr. and Mrs. Pembroke sort of bacame his second parents. It was the same with the early Powell episodes except instead of having a father around there was a grandfather around. The whole feeling of family was lost during years four and five, and I think the series moved away from it's original concept. This is one of the reasons I think the episodes in years four and five were not as good as those in years one, two and three. That and the Powell children were too old in the final two years to even have a sitter. After all, Jamie was 17 or 18 in the last season, she reallty didn't need Charles anymore. I think this was one of the reasons why they ended the seires at this point.

Jamie was actually 17 or 18 in the SHOW? My brother is 18 and hasn't had a sitter since he was 12! I mean jeez!

When CIC began its syndicated run in early 1987 Jamie was 14, so in season five shw would have been 18.

I think she's cool, but she treated Charles as though he was a child, that's probably the one thing I didn't like about her.

I wasn't saying that it was good they took the show off when they did because of the age of the kids. I was saying that is why they did decide to end the show when they did. I think the show probably could have gone on. The pluse side though is that CIC never became one of those shows that was on eight or nine years that became so bad that you wanted them to take the show off just to put it out of the its misery. You are right about Nicole, I can't imagine anyone besides her ever playing Jamie.

Keep in mind when the first season of Charles in Charge aired, Charles was a Freshman and about 18 or 19 years old, at the end of the show he would have been about 21 or 22, however in real life Scott Baio was 23 when the show started.

At least Lillian made sense on why she was there, but I never understood why the producers thought that Anthony needed to be added. They must have realized their mistake because he only appeared in around a half season and didn't have many lines.
