HELP! DVD burning problems

Hi,

I have been having some problems recently concerning burning my captured video files onto a DVD-R. I use Pinnacle Studio Version 8 to capture the video onto AVI, then use the same program to edit out the commercials and convert it into a .mpg file. Now, here is where the difficulty lies: I have two programs that should be able to burn the files onto DVD (Nero and EZ Movie & Photo Burner). Neither of these programs seem to successfully convert my .mpg files onto the blank disc I insert into my DVD burner drive. The programs either freeze in the middle of burning or a window displaying the message "illegal operation" pops up. I am desperately trying to figure out what to do to make this work, especially since I purchased a large number of DVDs for this project. Any help would be very much appreciated.
