Default Worth Buying?

I've been wanting to buy this show on dvd because I've heard it's good. But I've never seen it. Do you think it would be worth buying for someone who's never seen it before?

The only thing I was disappointed with was there were no interviews from the stars or the creators. That would've been great.

Interesting, I think that would be a great concept to add an intereview segment to the DVD package, but it seems that a lof of shows on DVD, like Good Times or Sanford and Son, do not do that...

Definitely worth buying, especially when a few places like amazon.com are selling it for just $20. How often are you gonna get around 10-11 hours of entertainment for that cheap? With 24 episodes in season 2 you're not even paying a dollar per ep, plus Good Times is simply a classic sitcom. GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, I didn't get it yet, I just got that pic from a website that sometimes shows dvd back covers. I wanted to also see the back cover for What's Happening to see how it differed from the Time-Life version, but they didn't have that one.

I'm not sure if I'm correct in guessing this, but I think the decision to leave off things like interviews and other gems like outtakes, etc. is deliberate.

From what I understand, shows like this one were not preserved very well and were shot on film that has degraded and which does not convert well in digital format, so this requires a lot of polishing and fixing. Inspite of this, sometimes the picture is still fuzzy. Back then, no one dreamed these shows would ever be sold in sets for people to own.

Anyway, from a financial standpoint, the process to clean up these old shows is costly, so the studios want to be sure to make their money back, but to do that they have to keep the price of the DVD within a range that would be realistic for people to spend.

If they added interviews and other stuff, they'd have to shell out more money to those who participated in those interviews, and in order to do that, they'd have to jack up the price of each set to compensate. But let's face it, other than die hard fans, most of the general public wouldn't buy a DVD season set of Good Times if it was more than $30, which it would have to be to insure everyone got a piece of the pie.

A case in point is The Mary Tyler Moore Show. That show's first season was chock full of extras, including commercials and a documentary, and it was also about $45. As a result, it didn't sell well, and now the company responsible for that show has decided to halt further releases of the show. The die-hard fans bought it, but most of the general public didn't since it was way out of their price range.

Again, I can't be sure if this is the reason, but if it is, then I'm all for it. I'd rather have all 6 seasons on DVD with no interviews than 1 or 2 seasons with interviews and no other seasons.

Take your pick...

Ed

Only the 1ST 3 seasons.

After John Amos left the show, I wouldn`t even rent.
