Default More on the earlier years vs. the later years.

Does anyone else think Brian and Antonio's friendship seemed to go south in the later years? In the early years, they appeared to be good friends. Brian was the one who even tried to find a bride for Antonio so he could stay in the country. However, in the later years, it appears as though Brian can't stand being around Antonio too much. One example is the episode where Brian and Antonio move in together with Casey. Brian thinks Antonio will be with his girlfriend most of the time, but Antonio's girlfriend dumps him. Brian and Casey then get annoyed because Antonio is of course upset and they kick him out. (But they them let him move back in).

Hmmm...I never really thought of Brian and Antonio as EVER being especially close.

I've always thought that Antonio's closest friend on the island (or at least in the airport) was Lowell. Antonio and Lowell used to get together and do "buddy" things outside of work....rat shooting at the dump, the annual swim in icy-cold water...and it was Antonio who Lowell was hanging out with when Lowell witnessed that murder.

Lowell and Antonio were like the 'Freak' croud in high school.
On 'Wings' they always seemed to use this high school reputation with the characters, where they hang out in seperate groups, but occasionally, others will tag along with that said group. Such as, Lowell, from the 'Freaks' might tag with the 'Popular' group of Brian, Joe and Helen, like in the hooker party episode.

Uh-oh, watch out....here it comes....another "Pilotguy" observation:

High school always seemed to play a VERY important part in the adult lives of the "Wings" characters. They were always referring to fun or traumatic things that happened to them in high school, and people from their high school years (the Hackett's coach, Sandy Cooper, etc.) would appear on the show to rekindle some of those old high school memories and relationships.

This was especially strange with the Hackett brothers, since both brothers had obviously gone on to college and higher education....but they almost never referred to their "college" years, only their "high school" years.

On most TV sitcoms you don't hear adult characters referring to high school as much as the "Wings" characters do. Of course, unlike other sitcoms, most of the "Wings" gang grew up together, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

I always thought that too. They seemed to have a special bond.

Actually, they STILL act like they're in high school. It's like they NEVER left.
The brothers compare lovers, ect. Like they were swapping girls in HS.

Ya know, Pilotguy, I was just thinking. Maybe the reason Antonio often became so bitter and miserable during the last two seasons was because he was missing his best buddy and must have felt responsable for the situation that caused Lowell to have to leave.

EXCELLENT point! Even if Antonio's love life wasn't so great in earlier seasons, at least he had buddy Lowell to hang around with and go places with. Once Lowell left, it seemed that nobody around the airport paid much attention to Antonio....Who WOULDN'T be bitter and miserable?

I know that the post-Lowell Christmas episode where Antonio buys everyone super-expensive and thoughtful gifts and NOBODY gives him a gift in return is supposed to be funny, and it IS....but I also find that storyline quite sad in that Antonio is really TRYING to be close with these people and you just KNOW that they don't feel the same way toward him.

Notice how Antonio tried to become quick friends with Budd. He even made Valentine's Day plans with him. But Budd seemed to only hang out with Antonio because he pitied him.

Now if only the writers were smarter, Antonio would have been happy in the last two seasons, because he would have been dating Casey ... But NOOOOOO!

I think I'm so upset about Antonio not dating Casey because all season long, they made it seem like in the end he would get Casey. But then instead, out of nowhere Brian comes along and gets her. Much like with my life. I always take too long at working up the courage to talk to the girl I like, that some other guy comes by and starts dating her.

Hmmm....Interesting that you would compare your love life to that of a "Wings" character. I can relate to that....Before I married my wife, I was like Roy Biggins on dates:

"So have you ever been in prison?"

"So does insanity run in your family?"

"So have you always been a woman?"

Yeah, that's one of the things that I think the writers just totally messed up with... Antonio's love life. He didn't deserve to be so lonely and bitter.

I think the Casey/Brian thing could've turned out okay... esp. seeing as how Joe & his brother would have married sisters... but Antonio needed someone.

I think the writers should have had a female mechanic replace Lowell, and Antonio and she should have gotten together. Also, that would've given an opportunity for a whole 'nother "We're just friends... no we're not" romance unfolding. Those are always fun.

Love,

Wing<><

Do you know what I think would have been REALLY nice? To have Antonio fall in love with someone who wasn't some raving beauty. (Let's face it, just about everyone on that show was just too good-looking!).

I know that they had "Edna, The Big-Faced Girl", but that whole story line was kind of cruel.
They could have had Antonio chasing after one beautiful girl after another....and then meet someone who is on the plain side, or a little overweight, but a very nice person. Antonio wouldn't expect to fall in love with someone like that, but they get to know each other and DO fall in love, and he ends up being very happy about it.....

Now THAT would have been a great storyline (and finish) for Antonio!

HEY! That's what I've always thought too! Hmm... maybe I feel another Wings fan fic coming on...

In my fantasy the female mechanic isn't pretty... just a normal looking girl. (Because I totally agree, Pilotguy, you don't see Casey, Helen & Alex walking down the street together every day!!)

And nobody pays much attention to her except they appreciate her talents. So she & Antonio pal around (since Antonio is missing Lowell) and everything's fine... and then fireworks later.

You know that's how it happens in real life most of the time... you meet somebody and maybe you don't think they're all that good looking, but after you get to know them and like their personality so much, then they start looking really hot to you.

Love,

Wing<><

On the whole unpretty mechanic note:
To most "normal" women, would Lowell Mather/Thomas Haden Church actually be considered handsome?
I'm not exactly in the "normal" tense, but then again, like a seasoned wine expert raving over good 100 year old booze, I tend to rave over aged men.
Some others might be into him, but I really think it's more about the charm of his characters that makes him attractive to them.
Unfortunately, I went for Thomas' facial creases, amazing cornflower blue eyes and gangly features first.

You know, I think what you're referring to is that his face has character. Personally, I always thought Lowell was adorable. I mean, not "good-looking" like Joe, but totally cute & adorable.

I'm like you in that I don't really enjoy watching actors who are just cookie-cutter perfect looking. They stop looking like individuals. They get plastic surgery, so who knows what they'd really look like?

I mean, all those classic actors like Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, even Clark Gable. Were they *really* good-looking? No, not in that Brad Pitt kind of way. But they had character!

Love,

Wing<><
