Exclamation For those who were around to see the original airing of "I Do, Adieu"...

Hello, all.

I was wondering about something today. Since I'm only 13, I don't remember seeing any Cheers episodes on their original air date. I had a question for those of you who remember watching "I Do, Adieu" the first time it was ever on.

First of all, did you know beforehand that Shell was leaving? If you didn't, did you actually expect Sam and Diane to get married? Just curious.

~Lauren

Yes it was a big news story at the time that Shelley was leaving. There were rumors that she would die or that she would marry Sam and just be taken off TV.

I didn't get into "Cheers" until a year and a half later (September, 1988) when the show went into syndication, but it was such a media frenzy that even my six-year-old self knew that some chick name Shelley Long was leaving some show called "Cheers" that was on too late for me to watch so she could pursue a movie career.

Pretty sick, huh?

*sigh* I didn't get to start watching Cheers until about 1989 or 1990...I remember the Kristie Alley years the best.

I didn't really start to watch Cheers until after Shelley Long left but it was big news at the time.

I watched Cheers during its original run, and there was a lot of buzz before Shelley's final show. Quite frankly, a lot of people thought she was nuts. I hated her leaving and never quite warmed up to Kirstie Alley. I missed the Sam and Diane saga.

It was the same with David Caruso when he was leaving NYPD Blue. Lots of press, lots of people shaking their heads.

I watched it from the git go and knew that she was leaving. I figured they'd just have her go off with the first boyfriend. The one who dumped her at the bar. But to go off to write her book was more in keeping with who the character was I thought.

Personally, I like the "Carla could have killed her" plot, ha!
