Default What's with this whole "punk/prep" thing?

Has anyone else noticed this among the teenagers today? My daughter tells me that people actually ask her if she's a punk or a prep, as if they even know what either of them mean. Why are people so stupid? Why do they like to lump themselves into groups? I shall never understand... I feel dumb now.

A prep is someone who judges people, tries to follow trends, cares what people think about them, etc. A punk is pretty much the opposite... someone who does their own thing, rebels against prep culture, does whatever they want. Alot of people think that preps are just people that keep up with the latest movies and music, wear the latest clothes etc but thats most likely because most preps are like that because they go with the flow, but if you just dress preppy and listen to pop music doesnt mean youre a prep. and some people think youre a punk if you wear hardcore clothes like the stuff from hot topic and torrid. really, someone can dress as hardcore as possible and still be a prep.

I think the way everyones always like "ughhh labels suck! who wants to be put into categorys?!?!?!" is overrated. who cares if someone labels you? i mean you dont have to like it but i just dont get it. unless they mean it as an insult, it shouldnt be a problem.

And the way people say "whats your definition of punk"/"whats your definition of prep" pisses me off. hello! the definition of punk and prep isnt someones opinion, its a fact.

And what i hate about it the most is usually when someones says theyre a punk, everyone else gets so judgmental. "What makes you a punk? do you think your punk because you shop at ot topic? do you think blink-182 and sum 41 are punk? blah blah blah" unless you really think that theyre a poseur, theres no need to give them a test about it. just let them be for crying out loud.

And for me, i havent decided what label fits me the best. alot of people at my school think im a goth and some people think im a punk but im not sure, im just a weirdo.

Actually, in Southern California, the whole punk vs. prep isn't around. We all co-exist in harmony.

Yeah, there's not really a punk vs. prep thing around here either.

I think it's a bunch of crap. But I guess us teenagers are so stupid that we have to put others into groups to keep track of them and know what kind of person they are. For myself...I got the attitude of a punk, and dress like a prep most of the time. I'm weird and junk, people just probably don't see me as that because I'm so shy and quiet in school they all think I'm a perfect little smart kid which really pisses me off because I'm not at all and I want people to know who I really am.

I'm right there with the two of you, I dress preppy and I'm sure that's what people classify me as but I'm anything but.

hm... I don't really label myself as a prep/punk. If you asked me what sort of person I was I would say im your class clown. I dress in your abercrombie/hollister preppy stuff but I do listen to punk music. Just cos I love abercrombie clothes & i like to keep up on my pop culture doesn't make me any less of "rebel" as a punk person. I probably shouldn't say something like this but its my opinion-I honestly think that people who are punkish-dress in all black anti-everything is just sort of an attention seeker.Like, I don't wanna fit in, so look at me, I'll hate everything. Just my take on it. I don't judge people and I don't label people. People label themselves. and as far as music & clothes go, I don't think music and clothes should make you who you are. I think thats dumb. I just think people love to give themselves the label of who they wanna be. I'm not saying thats who they are, but if its cool to be a "prep" they'll be a prep and if its cool to be a punk "they are punk" I can't stand the way punk people are like "im so punk because i listen to the cure and good charlotte" music doesn't make you. A few years ago you were listening to Hanson and Backstreet boys and Spice girls because thats what was popular, now you listen to Simple Plan and Linkin Park or Rob Zombie....so that "punk" style i don't really understand. I dunno. just my opinion.

Yeah, I definately agree with that...especially the whole punk attention seeker thing...like, I'm sure it's not all of them...who are the "true punks", but a lot of them do and you can definately tell. I think it's a little pathetic

yes exactly. I think they just wanna stand out and be that way. I'm not saying everyone has to be the same & be tready...but if you look at it, I think punk is very preppy. Its the a very popular thing to do, you're either punk or prep...so its not like you're escaping the preppy thing. My school is either preppy or ghetto. we do have our preps but another school thats close by that i did go to had all these punks or preps there. I think that you're either one or the other, but you're still preppy. if Punks try to escape the "popular thing" they can't.

I like to keep people guessing...

One day I'll be wearing cute Gap clothes

The next I'll be full out Hot Topic

Punk/prep? I know not. However I don't go around calling myself a punk b/c I love Hot Topic and I love punk and metal bands...nor do I call myself a prep b/c I love Gap too and I'll GLADLY admit to loving my good ol Spice Girls cds.

If it came down to it I'd say I was a prep. Tho more of my cds are punk and I frequent at Hot Topic, I'm a good girl at heart. I watch the frikin Disney channel...my Barbies...are still in my closet.

The freshies coming into my high school next year tho...grr...they think just b/c they dress all Avril that their complete badasses. How bout...no.

That's absolutely untrue. I cant speak for everyone because there are alot of poseurs out there, but the real punks are not looking for attention. They dress different because they want to, not because 'look at me, im so punk!' If they just wear alot of stuff from hot topic it doesnt make them the least bit punk. Whether youre punk or not depends on how you think. If people dress like that to fit in and crap, theyre just preps. I do hate preps and pretty much everything and everyone else i know... and i wear probably wear the scariest makeup in my school and alot of studded jewlery, does that mean im looking for attention? no, its because i like dressing like that. just because some people dress different doesnt mean theyre attention whores.

That's poseurs, dear. real punks dont dont label themselves by the music they listen to.

Exactly! I walk around sometimes with eyeliner on that makes me look like I'm about to kill someone... sure, I get some weird stares, but ****. I honest of God couldn't care less... I dress like that because I want to, because that's how I feel.
