Question Gone with the Wind.......

I love this movie. Last week I saw it twice. While viewing the movie it suddenly dawned on me.... Who do you think would have been a better Scarlet? I mean we all know Vivian Leigh was the best but, what if Vivian Leigh didn't play her... Who would you have picked?

I thought of Elizabeth Taylor. What do you think? Who would be your choice?

Gone With the Wind is one of the first movies I made sure to add to my DVD collection. Hard to see any other actress as Scarlett but I think Elizabeth Taylor could possibly do it.

Liz Taylor was originally supposed to be Bonnie Blue Butler.

Paulette Goddard was up for the role of Scarlett before Vivien Leigh got it. I saw one of her screen tests on a video once. She was pretty good.

La Laine as Scarlett O'Hara??? You gotta be kidding.

I disagree. Taylor is not my idea of Scarlett O'Hara with that squeaky voice of hers! She would have been perfect for Scarlett's sister.(the simpering, mealy-mouthed Sue Ellen)To me Liz would not have been a strong enough actress . I know that Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis tried out for the part but I think that they would have overshadowed the character and every other one in the cast(especially Rhett) being such strong-minded women.
So, I really don't know who else could have played Scarlett. Maybe Gene Tierney?(I'm thinking brunette)In a modern remake I am thinking Catherine Zeta Jones, maybe?
Delta Burke back about 10 years ago would have been just perfect! Don't you think?

delta was supposed to be scarlett in the sequel, but the project was postponed, and by the time they got to making it she had gained too much weight to be cast. or thats what she said when i was talking to her, she also doesnt think she really resembles vivien..which is dumb.

but anyyyways...im obsessed with gwtw, and vivien is the best actress that has ever/will ever exist...so theres noone that could even compare to her scarlett..she was just too perfect.

Vivien was great--I couldn't imagine anyone else as Scarlett, but I read that they considered an extremely wide variety of actresses (32 screen-tested) for the part, including Lana Turner and Lucille Ball. It would have been such a different movie without Vivien!

Delta! I hadn't even thought about her, but she'd be perfect. Great choice, Marlene.

After Selznick met (and later married) Jennifer Jones he said he wished he could have cast her as Scarlett. She would have been good, but probably not up to par with Vivien

Kate Hepburn was a great actress, but she's such a Yankee! I love her, I really do, but that so would never have happened.

The Bette Davis stories are conflicting. The studio said that since she made Jezebelle they were afraid the parts were too similar. The version her daughter (brat though she is) tells is that Bette did never-ending campaigning for it and it was never offered to her. And the story that Bette herself told was that she turned it down - knowing that if she was hired, Errol Flynn would play Rhett instead of Clark Gable. Most likely, the truth is a blend of the three.

Gene Tierney would have been wonderful. That's a great idea. I'm not sure who I would pick for a modern remake. It takes a very strong kind of actress, I can't really think of any off the top of my head. Catherine Zeta Jones and Jennifer Connelly aren't quite strong enough, in my mind. Maybe Laura Harring? I don't know.
