1.Gloria's Crying-Man she was GOOFY looking when she cried.
2.Addition of Stephanie-This was an adult comedy for 8 years and then a kid was added to the cast. WHY? made no sense. So other than these two things, i loved the show and it will always be in my collection. |

I remember an interview SS did with (I believe) Mike Douglas back when the show was actually airing. She said the writers just loved giving her a reason to bawl out loud "they LOVE it when I cry." I have no idea why that stood out in my mind all these years..maybe because I think she looks cute all pouty. She cries with gusto!
Re: Stephanie...I think she was added to show the even softer side of Archie, sometimes making him act a bit TOO soft.

Well that cry did nothing for me. I didn't think her character mature at all. |

If all the characters are funny, mature, serious, educated, non educated, then there's no balance....nothing for anyone to bounce off of. There has to be diversity of some sort. I don't think anyone would disagree with you that Gloria wasn't all that and a bag of chips in the grown-up department. Being "mature" was Mike's job...Mike's role. You're not going to tell us that Archie or George or Edith were mature....HAH!! I think the purpose of the characters and casting is to point something out that's very basic: human beings have flaws.

To be very honest with you, the Gloria character was so annoying. Archie, Mike, or George didn't annoy me. Edith only annoyed me in that Lottery episode but Gloria was the worst. Maybe Archie and George was annoyng to others but they entertained me. |

That's cool you got to see the AITF cast on the Mike Douglas Show. I wish those would be on video or DVD. I have a boxset of the five days that John and Yoko were on the Mike Douglas Show. I don't how often the AITF cast was on that show, but it would be neat to see. What else do you remember about that?

Re-read my post, please. I never said the *cast* was on the show. I said I recalled SS was on the show.
SS is "Sally Struthers." This isn't to say the cast never appeared together on a talk show in the 70's though. They may very well have. I just don't remember it. Also...I made it clear I wasn't positive it was Mike Douglas. I am pretty sure it was, but I won't say definitely it was. Could have been Dinah Shore, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavette, Carson...etc etc. But if memory serves me, it was Douglas.

Woo! It was Douglas!! I am not old and feeble after all! Check it out!! Look under guests under "S". And....although I couldn't remember, they WERE all on that ep. I only remembered seeing Sally...but hey it was 1977. Caroll, Rob and Sally were on.

Okay...I was just wondering because I did read that Jean co-hosted the Mike Douglas Show in 1973 and I did see a short clip of all them on the Mike Douglas Show from 1978 (that was on the E! True Hollywood Story. So, that's why I said cast...I'm not too familiar with those talk shows from the 70s...I have not seen--Dinah Shore etc. I did see some of the Dick Cavette Show (I read that Carroll was on that at one time, maybe others,). I only saw the former Beatles (separate episodes) on that show awhile ago on VH-1...but after I saw the E! True Hollywood Story I noticed that they (AITF cast whether together or separate) were also on the Mike Douglas Show too. I just thought it would be neat if they could put out an AITF boxset of them on the MD show...separate and together appearances.

Thanks for that link you posted to the Mike Douglas site.
It seems as though the 1977 episode is available...I checked the list of names and all the AITF cast was listed for 11/28/77. They might've been on at different times or together..either way, I wish I could see it. I checked out the cost and it was ridiculous--95 dollars! -Kristi |
