Prolific character actress Frances Morris played Sara (NOT Martha) Kent here and, I'd never seen this pilot episode(from George Reeves' 'Adventures of Superman' series) before TV LAND aired it last night but I have to say of all the 'Ma Kents' I've seen, she was easily the most interesting and believable.
She actually seemed like the prototypical tough-but-tenderhearted early-to-mid 20th century US American farmwife who helped build the US from the ground up I especially I liked that was kind and loving to her husband and son yet not mawkishly sentimental. She seemed to be resilliant after her husband's death urging her adoptive son to use his powers for the greater good of the world instead of being clingy and dependent ! The other Ma Kents seemed, at best, to be blank slates or on the flakey side (like K Callan was in 'Lois and Clark') but one can easily imagine her and Eben having raised Clark to be the forthright, principled yet slightly insecure person kids everywhere IDed with! It's too bad that this would be Miss Morris's only appearance on the series yet, perhaps, it was better that Clark would make Lois, Perry and Jimmy his de facto family. |
