Did anyone here about what he did? He held is baby son while feeding a crocodile. I saw a little clip of it on Jay Leno. Well, it's in the news and here's an article:
Crocodile hunter Steve Irwin has defended feeding a crocodile while holding his baby son, claiming it's good parenting to teach children about crocodile danger. Mr Irwin is under investigation by the Queensland Families Department after feeding a crocodile while holding his one-month-old son, Bob, at his Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast on Friday. The incident has made headlines internationally. At a media conference outside the zoo and flanked by his father Bob, wife Terri and daughter Bindi, Mr Irwin claimed he was "hurt" by the allegations of child neglect. "I am hurt. I am as hurt as I get," he told reporters. "But this must be happening for a reason. And I sincerely believe that Bindi is the most well-rounded kid her age, and by crikey, is the most croc savvy kid her age in the world. "If I had the time again maybe I would do it differently. "But it's all about perceived danger ... I was in complete control. "People say, `well what if you had fallen?' But for that to take place a meteorite would have had to come out of the sky and hit Australia at 6.6 on the Richter scale like in Iran. "Bindi is very croc savvy and we live in crocodile territory so they (the children) have to be croc savvy." The Queensland Families Department has confirmed it will seek unedited copies of the tape from the Irwins to ascertain whether they breached Workplace Health and Safety regulations. Scores of Queenslanders rang the Families Department care crisis hotline after the footage appeared on the nightly news. Police say they are not seeking criminal charges, and acting Premier Terry Mackenroth said there would be no charges. "They claim that the child was not in danger, they understand people's concerns and have assured children's services that it won't happen again," Mr Mackenroth said. Mr Irwin said he lost his mother in a car accident and was well aware of how easily accidents can happen. "Every time I put my children in my car I am scared because my wife and I have no control over the traffic," he said. Wife Terri also came to Mr Irwin's defence claiming it was a parent's duty to educate children against the dangers of tropical life. "Children learn to swim at an early age. Would you rather have a child learning to swim under duress or to have them drown?," she said. "Children need to be taught the dangers of crocodiles." Meanwhile, politicians have entered the debate, claiming the stunt was irresponsible. "This was a very irresponsible action from someone who is an international role model for this country," federal opposition families spokesman Wayne Swan said. "The right course of action for him now is simply to apologise, admit he made a mistake, and put it behind him." Three years ago, a worker from Australia Zoo was admitted to hospital after being mauled by a crocodile. The zoo was fined $300 for not reporting the incident to Workplace Health and Safety. |

Aw.. I love Steve! Anyways, yeah it was pretty dumb and not the safest thing to do-- especially with a 1 month old kid! It does make sense to me though to teach his kids about the dangers of crocodiles since thats their life and are surrounded by them daily, but a 1 month of baby isnt going to remember anything. People make mistakes, and he made one and feels bad.

Wow, I like Steve and all... but this kind of reminds me of Michael Jackson dangling his baby over the balcony.

Maybe it wasn't the best decision to make, but if HE felt it was ok, which he did, he would do it. But, if HE FELT that the child would be in danger, I highly doubt he would do it. When I heard about the Austrailian Government maybe investigating this, I was irritated. It was HIS decision wether to do it or not. Sometime, I think people have to much time on there hands....honestly, I do.

How old was the crocodile?
Obviously if the kid is Steve Irwin's daughter, she is going to be in the near vicinity of crocodiles on a daily basis, so maybe the "croc-savy" story has some "bite" to it? |

I read about that in the paper. What a stupid thing to do.

I mean, I wouldn't trust a limp-wristed weakling like Michael Jackson to be able to hold up a feather over a balcony, much less a child. Steve was simply trying to acclimate his child to what that kid is going to be seeing for probably the rest of his life. I personally wouldn't have done it, but I'm not Steve Irwin, and I wasn't born and raised(with hands-on experience) around crocs and other dangerous reptiles like he was. If you've ever watched his show, you know the man knows what he is doing. |

I watched the video of him feeding the croc while holding his baby. He had his kid in his left arm, and he was feeding the croc with the bait in his right hand. He had the entire left side of his body turned away from the crocodile. and the way we was standing, it looked like he never would have slipped. He was standing about 3 feet away of the crocodile pond, so the ground may have been slippery though. But the croc wasn't even paying attention to Steve, just the bait. So I really don't know what to think.
