Default The Best of TV 2003

List your favorite things about TV in 2003:

Here's mine:

American Idol 2 January - May
~ To be honest, I'm not a huge Ruben or Clay fan but the battle was so intriguing and the competition and talent was better than season 1, the close finale made it all the more interesting

8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter "Goodbye" November
~ In the wake of John Ritter's sudden death, everyone had an opinion on what his young ABC sitcom should do. ABC decided to press forward and it turned out to be the right decision. The first show since Ritter's death adressed the death of his on-screen character in a tremendously well-written and well-acted episode. The show has continued to blend tragedy with comedy and is doing a wonderful job at it

American Dreams All Year
~ One of the quietly best shows on television, if not the best is the critically acclaimed "American Dreams". Showing a suburban family living in the turbulant 60s adresses the impending Vietnam War, racism, teenage and adult struggles that all generations can identify with along with the mix of the American Bandstand recreation makes this show a must watch

According to Jim Season 3 September-present
~ What has been a funny show has really come into its own in its 3rd season. The ratings are up and the show is funnier. Using the "Raymond" technique of revolving episodes around little incidents has made this show an every week laugh-fest

TV Land's 48 hours of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie May/June
~ For 2 consecutive weekends, TV Land presented 48 hours of "Bewitched" and then 48 hours of "I Dream of Jeannie" to welcome the shows to TV Land's lineup. Both shows hadn't been shown on TV Land/Nick at Nite since 2000 and it was a pleasure to see the shows in all their glory all weekend long

Buffy The Vampire Slayer "Chosen" - May. A great fitting finale to my all time favorite series.

Arrested Development. October-onward. As a fan of quirky humor, I have been sorely missing my fix since Ally McBeal went off the air. A great ensemble cast where nobody dominates the show. I expect this to emerge into a real cult hit if Fox allows it to run long enough.

Roseanne's return to prominence on Nick and Oxygen. - September-onward. Her own "comeback" attempt unfairly failed because ABC couldn't just postpone the cooking show for her. But her classic 88-97 sitcom emerged from a fading tv memory back to prominence and winning over an entirely new audience.

The second half of Angel season 4. Jan-May. Angel has always been in the Slayer's shadows in my opinion. But as Buffy started winding down, Angel really came into it's own the second half of the fourth season. The big bad kept changing every week, and at the very last moment, Angel changes reality. This season with Spike hasn't been quite so good though.

South Park. April-December. SP had been seen by casual fans as a show "in decline" for a few seasons. But this season came around and everything went up again. From Raisins to South Park Is Gay (a parody of Queer Eye) to Fat Butt And Pancake Head (a 30 minute diss to Bennifer) to the shockingly relevance of the season finale It's Christmas In Canada (which mocks the newly captured Saddam Hussain.... a mere THREE DAYS AFTER THE CAPTURE!!!!), the show had it's most consistant and funniest season since season 4 in 2000.

8 Simple Rules' tribute to John Ritter. November. I never watched the show, I confess. But I have been a fan of John on Three's Company. While I'm not very familiar with the show, I thought the farewell episode to John/Paul was very heartfelt and well-written and will probably get recognition at the Emmys.

Friends- Is the last season and so far is pretty good.

Whoopi-depspite the ratings and the bad reviews seems to be a funny show with a big star.

Full House- Now being aired on two networks ABC Family and Nick at Nite.

Roseanne-after being took off TBS now airing on Oxygen and Nick at Nite.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy- A surprise hit and one of the best cable reality shows.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show- after a failed attempt at a second sitcom she comes back with a funny talk show.

I'd forgotten all about her second sitcom, I liked it. A shame that it failed

"I'm With Her" - especially the holiday epiosdes and "The Smarty Party!"

"Ed" - the whole fourth season, so far. Ed and Carol are definitely together, the show is funnier than last season, and everything is fine in Stuckeyville.

"Frasier" - This is - or may be - the last season, and it's had such a comedic rebirth this year, it's no wonder why Kelsey Grammer wanted to to a twelfth season - and it made forget the lackluster tenth season.

in no particular order....

Survivor: Pearl Islands
And the introduction of the world's favorite survivor.... Rupert.

TVLand's Tribute To John Ritter
Done perfectly.

8 Simple Rules (continuing without Ritter)
Though not as good as it would ever have been with John.... its still great.

The TVLand Awards
(i wonder who will host this year....)

Frasier - Season 11
IMO.... the best season since Niles got together with Daphne.... and possibly the best season ever.

Best New Sitcom - "Arrested Development" Finally FOX comes up with another great live action comedy. Great cast.

Best Reality Series - "American Chopper." I love this show. Bickering father and son bikers working at their custom cycle shop. Some of the funniest arguing on TV.

Best Animated Series - "Star Wars: Clone Wars." Sleek and stylish, these three minute mini toons are a perfect addition to the Star Wars universe.
Honorable Mention - "Home Movies"' Also from Cartoon Network, this quirky Adult Swim series is pretty damn funny.

Best comeback for a cancelled animated series - "Family Guy."
The numbers don't lie folks. The DVDs were a top seller, and the reruns were ratings gold for Cartoon Network. Take that FOX!

Best Mini Series - "Battlestar Galactica" Sci Fi Channel did a great job of reinventing the not so stellar 70's series. Hopefully more installments are in the works.
