It's a way to try to get OLTL fans into AMC, and vice versa. I like the idea of having Dorian in PV for a while. I hardly get a chance to watch OLTL and Dorian is my favorite on that show, so it's nice to see her on AMC.

If I didn't start watching OLTL, I wouldn't have been able to see Babe and Opal on the show.

It's a desparate attempt to shore up sagging ratings. GH is doing okay in the ratings (it usually 2nd or 3rd), but AMC and OLTL are more than half way down the list. This is a far cry from when AMC was the number two soap back int he early 90s. OLTL has never really been a stand alone show, not at least in the last decade. It rarely outranks AMC.
Either way, both soaps have lost about half their audience in the last decade. |

To clarify, ALL SOAPS have lost signifigant amounts of viewers since the early 90's...
Back in the hey-day of the soaps in the 1980's and 1990's soaps were getting numbers like.. 6.6 (that would have been a high rated show like GH or DOOL) now they are getting 2.1's... see the difference? |

I know that, but when a show like AMC or OLTL starts dipping below a 3 rating, it spells big trouble. How much longer can tyhe eroision go on before the networks just say "screw it" and air only talk shows in the afternoon. In a decade, will the number 5 soap be drawing a 1.5 rating? will that be acceptable?

As sad as it is, in 5 years time i bet that there will be NO MORE soaps. ABC soaps in particular are loosing huge numbers of viewers and i beleive, like many industry insiders that in 5 years time (maybe longer than that) soaps will be history.
If the current soaps are canceled i see it happening in this order- Guiding Light and One Life To Live would go first because they continue to loose viewers in dramatic numbers. I don't think that ABC is supporting "OLTL" much latley and it would be the first ABC soap to go. "GL" was nearly lost a year or so ago when its contract expired, i think it won't make it past another contract negoation. Passions would be next based on ratings, but NBC has nothing but support for it and it has a small, if not loyal following. W/ that in mind All My Children would be next. I would guess that ATWT would go next... Then DOOL, Y&R and GH would go... That is what i think is the most likely situation. of course this is mere speculation. as anything could happen. |

I think NBC's soaps are safe because they have a very young viewership. Passions is the number 1 soap amongst teens, women 18-24 and number two amongst women 18-34. "Days" has been renewed until 2008, so it's safe for a while.
If you look at the viewership for "Passions," it's actually very stable- it's consistantly been at a 2.0 rating to 2.3 rating since its premiere. I would say it's the only sopa that's gained viewers in the last five years. CBS's soaps are in trouble, for sure. The have the oldest viewership, especially "GL." "Y&R" will be safe for a while considering that it's the number one soap by a wide margin. As for ABC's soaps, time will tell. If they can toe the line where they are right now, they should be okay. But they're not doing that. "GH" just set a record low in households last week. |

The only problem is that the networks may just decide its not worth it and throw in the towel to save money and just hand over the timeslots to local affielates. To be sure the only daytime formats that are safe are talk shows and gameshows.... unless something dramatic can be done to save the soaps.
