Default How did people react...

Back when AITF first aired?

I'm so so very much loving this marathon.

I'm surprised at some of the things that come out of Archie's mouth and I wonder how the general public took to him when this show aired originally. Obviously it was good enough to keep the show on for 10 some years but was there much critical objection to things he said about Asians, Black, Women, etc?

How it all came down to this, only the Devil knows. Retail Rodeo is at the corner on my left. The motel is down the road to my right. I close my eyes and try to peer into the future. On my left, I saw days upon days of lipstick and ticking clocks, dirty looks and quiet whisperings. And burning secrets that just won't ever die away. And on my right, what could I picture? The blue sky, the desert earth, stretching out into the eerie infinity. A beautiful never-ending nothing.

Well, this was 10 to 15 years before I was born(LOL) but I have been watching the marathon all day and last night as well. Very addictive. I was surprised at some of the things he said as well...

The show didn't sit too well with an African American Magazine called EBONY. In 1971, there was an issue with Archie Bunker on the Cover and the question on front of the magazine was-IS ARCHIE BUNKER THE REAL WHITE AMERICA?

Yeah I would expect that it wouldn't. He didnt' have nice things to say about many different situations.

If you know of other situations or comments I'd be interested in hearing them.

I wish I could help you out, but I was born in 1978. I wish I could remember when AITF was on the first time around. Now that would've been very interesting...

Glad you're enjoying the marathon- It's about time AITF get's a decent timeslot (in January). Anyway, when AITF first premiered in the 1970-71 midseason, CBS didn't receive many objections or comments regarding the show. It wasn't until after the show caught on in that summer that the critics started making noise.

I was 11 when the show aired. I can remember my parents not wanting me to watch it because they felt it was an "adult" program. But I recall a lot of hype about the premiere, and my Dad wasn't much of a TV watcher, and he hunkered down to watch this new "ground-breaking" show. My Mom said she was horrified at Archie's attitude and then soon learned the show was and is a parody of social attitudes and she grew to enjoy Archie and the rest of the family.

I was 10 when AITF aired. My parents loved it! After the first season, myself and kids my age began to watch this with our families. All the hot topics they covered on the show were being battled out anyway in real life back then. There was so much social/political/economic turmoil back then in the country, and shows like AITF (and other Norman Lear shows) were welcomed in many people's homes.
