I went nearly 4 years with only one Peice of Spyware and in a matter of 30 days im infected with 15 different ones. Most of them i cant even get rid of, im working on it but it takes time, even with SpyBot SD and Ad-Aware. |

I'm glad you brought this petition up, because even though I've been using Spybot (which is great), there's no way of getting around spyware entirely. I can run a scan every day and I'll still find 70 problems. Hopefully it'll get their attention and end it once and for all.

Here's a great place robyrob told me about in the past...
You need to first download HijackThis (there should be a link at that page for you to download it). It logs all the programs you're running at the time...when you do so, that will help the people there fix your spyware problems. HT and SpywareInfo have both saved my ass many times. http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=11 The people there are really helpful and will assist you in getting rid of nasty spyware that can't be removed. As for that petition, I signed it. I'll pass it around at the other boards I visit. Thanks again

"Spyware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Adware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee." ...but it can also come in the form of home page/ search engine hijackers, pop-up servers (coming from your pc), "web bugs", "tracking cookies", trojans, key loggers, hidden progs that take screenshots, email logging, chat logging and just about everything else generally it is installed without your knowledge or consent and resists any attempts to uninstall or remove it http://cexx.org/problem.htm has some info about WHY this is a problem, and some other great sites are www.grc.com and http://www.spywareinfo.com |

I HATE Spyware. In the last 4 days I've been hit with it abut 12 times. I've run my Ad Aware over and over and even if I just run it, spend a half a day online and then run it again I have MORE problems.
I tried to get to one of the sites RobyRob suggested to me the other day but I can't get it to work. I think it was for Spybot? I have Adaware but it's apparently not enough. I'm signing the petition. |

Spybot has an option to add their hosts file:

open Spybot in "advanced mode" (it should have a shortcut on the startmenu once it is installed)
click on the "Tools" button on the Navbar on the left
the 6th item under Tools is Hosts file click on that
click on the "Add Spybot-S&D hosts list"
it may take a while to add ALL of those sites (there ARE a lot of them - and the list grows daily)
click on the Spybot S&D button at the top of the Navbar on the left
click on the "Immunize" button
click on the "Immunize" button in the right pane (i'll explain what it does in a moment
click on the "Install" to install the bad dowload blocker for Internet Explorer
at the bottom of the page, you may want to select any of the options under "Recommended miscellaneous protections" - I usually just lock the Hosts file, but you can also lock your Home page - just don't forget that you've locked it if you have trouble changing it in the future
what the "Immunize" feature does is it prevents bad Active X components from installing - basically Active X is a way to run programs or plugins within Internet Explorer, and if you dont control it, it could potentially allow a web page to install these programs just by opening the web page |
