Default Gus The Fireman

Not sure if qanyone remmebers him or actually likes him but he is in the episode of the Brady Bunch where Bobby wants to be just like Jesse James. Bobby says Jesse James is his hero. Burt Mustin (who played Gus) comes in and tells Bobby all the mean stuff James did and how he was a bad train robber. Just thought this was a fun fact.

I don't recall him on the Brady Bunch, but I remember thinking he was up there in age when he was on LITB. He was born 1882, which made him 75 years old when the series began in 1957. He didn't die until 1977, so he stayed productive until the end if he was on the Bradys in the early 70s.

I loved Old Gus....always had something interesting to say to the kids....and always had a kind word for everyone.

I remember him in many other shows also...he was very active in his older years, much better than just sitting and wasting away!

In fact, when Mustin appeared in the "Jesse James" episode of the Brady Bunch, he played an author whose father was killed by Jesse James. Mike found the book he wrote on James in the library, and was able to contact him and invite him to the Brady house. That's when he straightened out Bobby on the real Jesse James...

Mustin had an amazing career. He was already in his 70s when he played Gus on LITB , and 15 years later, there he is again on the Brady Bunch.

I also remember him on All in the Family, as well as a number of other shows...

Probably not too many people (including yours truly) would even know Mustin's name, but TV Land did a "tribute" to him a few years ago (basically a commercial showing a lot of his scenes from different TV shows, and kept saying his name all during the song they played), and as a result, now people can put a name with the face. He's one of the most recognizable character actors ever, but thanks to TV Land and their silly little commercial, now everyone knows who Burt Mustin was....pretty cool of TV Land to pay tribute to an accomplished but unrecognized and underappreciated actor.

I would love to see that! Do they ever replay it, or is it gone forever?

I'm guessing that they probably won't, but if TV Land ever does run that commercial again, it may not be for quite a while...

But you never know...TV Land has done stranger things, and they may just decide to do a Burt Mustin Box Set one of these days, for old times sake...

I didn't realize that Mustin died while being associated with the "Phyllis" show...that's quite a while back...I knew he died a long time ago, I just wasn't sure how long...

In any event, I haven't seen the Burt Mustin commercial on TV Land in several years...but in my opinion, it was too good to just put away forever...maybe we'll see it again sometime
