That was not done by Nick at Nite...that was done when the episode originally aired in the 70's. While they did use the GD term before (in We're Having a Heat Wave) perhaps they felt it was too heavy for a Christmas episode. I don't know for sure but it has nothing to do with Nick at Nite. I have another print of this show from a local station here and they have the same line in there. I kinda wish they never overdubbed it in the first place as I think it really diminishes the impact of the scene. It is, to me, a very haunting and wonderfully acted scene by Carroll O'Connor. IMO, it was the most realistic angry scene he ever played and everytime I see that scene, it gives me the chills. It summed everything up about the character and how he didn't want to admit that his country he so proudly believed in may have made a mistake. I just thought that was handled so well.

How do Nick at Nite/TV Land dub the GD language in "We're Having a Heat Wave?" Was this also cut in syndicate prints, or the responsibility of Nick at Nite/TV Land?

unless something has changed, they didn't do anything to the GD line in the heat wave episode.

I had the episode on tape from a local station a few years ago and the scene was cut out. I retaped it when Nick at Nite ran it and the scene was reinstated (whereas other scenes that were in my original copy from the local station were cut). The scene was reinstated with the GD line intact. I haven't seen it on Nick at Nite since I taped it again so if they have cut or altered it since then, I am not aware of it.

I'm glad that line was cut out. I'd like the vain uses of the word "God" cut out of everything, as I consider it worse than any other expletive. (And if you wanna quote me on that, please do, it'd be a favor.)

I can see your point. It doesn't bother me personally but I respect ones opinion. I think it was pretty funny the way he justified using it but again, that is only my opinion. I believe those are the only two times that phrase was used in the entire run of the series to my knowledge (it may have been referred to as GD in a few instances but never in its entirety).

The one that I kinda raised an eyebrow over was the use of the word 'gook' in a couple of episodes. For some reason it just seems too harsh of a word for Archie to use. I don't remember the specific episodes that it was used it but it didn't get much of an audience reaction and wasn't used again. This isn't to say that Archie didn't use harsh words when it came to other races but it just seemed a little excessive to me. I'd equate that to if he used the N word all the time, it would come across as pure racism than just plain ignorance and I don't think he ever used that word (others around him did...Sammy, the Jeffersons and one of his lodge brothers in an Archie Bunkers Place episode titled "The Incident" where in turn Archie punched him out!). The only time he used the word I think was in the Twos a Crowd episode where he and Mike are locked in the storage room of the bar.

The use of GD seems to be an excessive way to push the language envelope much the same as in MASH where they used the term SOB in an episode title "Guerrila My Dreams" where there was a woman Hawkeye treated just so she could get better and be taken away to be shot. It was also used in the final episode of the series but no other time in its entirety to my knowledge.
