I just saw the commercial with Michael McDonald singing in the MCI commercial.
He's singing.... Ain't nothing like the real thing. Ain't nothing like the real thing baby Ain't nothing like the real thing Ain't nothing like the real thing There's a picture hanging on the wall but you don't see me You don't hear me ....... etc. Does anyone have his music? He seems to have a nice voice (manly)... |

That song, "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing," is a cut from Michael McDonald's new album Motown, an LP of Motown covers. As for what I think of him, I think he's seventies rock's greatest white singer!

Not a big fan of his solo stuff, but I like what he did with the Doobies.

I never heard of him until the MCI commercials. Actually when I saw him in that first commericial, for some reason, I thought he looked like Jay Leno!

He has a very nice singin voice. I like him. I like his song he did with James Ingram called Ya Mo Be There & i like his song with Patti Labelle called On My Own. I also like the song he did for the Running Scared soundtrack. I forgot the name of the song but it was a big hit. Remember the Running Scared movie with Billy Crystal & Gregory Hines? That was a good movie. I saw those MCI commercials with him singin Ain't No Mountain High Enough & Ain't Nothin Like The Real Thing. He did a concert on the PBS station about a month ago where he did some of his old songs & he did some Motown remakes with Ashford & Simpson singin with him.

I really like his voice. I thought he was great with the Doobie Brothers.

This guy can really sing and it's not like he's having a hernia to get the notes out like some other performers. he just flows. His singing is great, but he needs to be matched up with the right material otherwise his records can be unbearbly bad. Motown CD is his best whole album by far. He can do blue eyed soul with the best of them like James Ingram. He even did some gospel duets that are surprisingly good.

the only MM songs I liked are I Keep Forgetting and What A Fool Believes.
I was stunned to read he was only about 25 during the time What A Fool Believes was big, in the Doobie Brothers. When you see those pics of him, with that bushy beard, and salt-and-pepper hair (now he's totally grey), you'd have guessed he was at least 10 years older than that |

He was only 25? You're kidding. That would mean he's about 50 now. He looked like he was in his 30s for real. Maybed he smoked too many blunts and that aged him.

This guy did some nice backup work too on This is It by Kenny loggins, Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross and You Belong to Me by Carly Simon.
He doesn't try to be flashy in his singing, he justs does it all so effortlessly like breathing. |
