Michael Jackson or Prince: Who had a bigger influence on Jaent Jackson's music? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I ask you, which of these 80's icon rivals, Prince or Michael Jackson had a bigger influence on the music of Janet Jackson. Her older brother Micheal, or Prince through Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis?

In other terms, does Janet Jackson music sound more like Michael Jackson's music or Prince's music?

I think musically, Janet sounded more like Prince than Michael, but in her videos, you see the MJ influence.

Yeah, musically she sounds more like Prince, but she steals Michael's moves...mostly I think she just sounds like herself though...

Yesh I agree her dance moves are like Michael but her music is more Prince, but I still like Janet Jackson anyway.

I just find it ironic, because of what rivals Michael and Prince were back in the day. I just wonder if this eats at Michael that Prince had a such a huge influence on his sister's music.

well, I think much of the Prince rubbing off is the fact that Jam and Lewis were Prince proteges at one point. They were from Minneapolis as well

That is my point, that is why I started this tread, is Prince's history with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which goes all the way back to the 70's Minnapolis music scene, when Prince was in a band called Grand Central, and Jimmy and Terry were in a band called Flyte Tyme. (which of corse they named their production and company after and publish their songs as Flyte Tyme music)

But Janet's music sounds more like the Time, a early to mid 80's band of which Jimmy and Terry were members, than anyone else including Prince. But in reality Prince wrote and produced most of the Time's songs, and played most of the instruments on their albums, so the Time is really Prince.

Janet is not the only Jackson to have a Prince influence, LaToya covered the Prince song "Private Joy".

I think Randy Jackson was influenced by Prince also. Not the Randy from American Idol, but the youngest Jackson brother. In 89, he released an album from a band he had formed, Randy & The Gypsies (Prince & The Revolution), the band had a similar look and sound to what Prince was doing in his heyday. The thing though is if anyone is gonna be influenced by either Prince or MJ, you'd think it would more likely be Prince because he's more musically inclined than MJ, Prince writes and produces himself and has that history with the proteges. Michael Jackson doesn't have an easily identified sound like Prince does, MJ's influence would be more concerning the dance moves I think.

I believe it was more recently. Back in the good old days of Audiogalaxy, I used to be on the "Prince rarities and remixes" list, and it was sent to me.
