They should be more comedic when talking about sexual issues because if they were they wouldn't sound so vulgar. I think they should have episodes written by writers Susan Harris (Soap, The Golden Girls, Empty Nest), Linda Bloodworth (Designing Women) and Norman Lear who wrote the best black shows. it really needs the touch of these people who could put life in this oterwise dead show. the Golden Girls talked about sexual issues in a racy way, but not offensive like girlfriends and Golden Girls had a strong friendship, as in Girlfriends the friendship is a bit loose and not very good. if the writers I just spoke of would write some episodes it would be better. since the creator is a black woman she should have the girls dress more sophistacated than casual. they all should have powerful jobs as opposed to just two having good jobs. they should follow the example of Golden Girls and Designing Women because these women had dates with men, but in a way where it was less vulgar than Girlfriends. and they should be strong like Maude. watch these shows to see what I'm talking about. I am very disapointed with all the show on Upn, because they are degrading and written by black people. Norman Lear is white and could write better black shows than these black people and he opened the door for show like What's Happening!!!, Amen, 227 and countless others. people of all races watched these shows and brought them to the top of Nielsen ratings. are the Nielsen rating racist because all the black Upn shows are at the bottom? not at all because the Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Son, What Happening!!!, 227 and Amen all ranked highly in there time. and right now Bernie Mac and My Wife and kids rank high with Whoopi and Tracy Morgan expected to do the same, so it has a lot to do with the network and these show have that great rapid fire insult type of comedy which is what people want. are the emmys racist? no, because Isabel Sanford and other blacks have won the trophy. I don't think anybody on Upn deserves an emmy or image award because the degrade black people and they can't really act. I think next year will be a good year for blacks at the emmy's because we are getting better shows.

and again I say WOW!.. comparing Girlfriends to The Golden Girls I get your point about the writing yes it could be tighter, but it is usually funny. And yes I think I would have them dress a little more sophisticated as you put it. But not everybody has a 'good' job and/or have a college education, or may have too much education in Lynn's case. But I think that type of diversity is real what's NOT real is there body type, not everyone is a size 4. I think I am missing your point about vulgarity though.
Oh and the shows you mentioned were all of working class black folks in the 70's and 80's. And not that anything is wrong with that... Sorry i lost my train of thought...

I think the concept of the show is good. yes, not everyone would have a good job I just am basing it on other shows where this is true. The vulgarity I have to explain just what I mean. in my view the dating and sexuality thing in the show is too overrated. these episodes are good, but sometimes don't have enoughs laughs. I think it is too much like Sex and the City where hardly anything comical happens. I think Girlfriends is better at showing comedy. I just would like to see an episode every once in awhile that has a highly comedic situation that has nothing to do with dating. and sometimes a highly dramatic episode that has nothing to do with dating. I just don't think that with this opportunity for black women to showcase themselves on a tv show they have streched the boundaries enough. they have confined it to one subject. I think that is good that Lynn has a lot of education, but unfortunetly she does not use it. as you were saying before not everybody has a good job, but for this show the concept sort of calls for it. and yes, the shows I mentioned were working class black folks. I meant the subject matter of these shows sometimes included serious topics alongside side splitting comedy. and I agree not everyone is a size 4 and I think the show should diversify itself in that area. I just think this is a golden opportunity for blacks and to create dynamic stories with great writing. thank you for responding to my post. and as I said check out Golden Girls the only difference between the show is age some of the subject matter resembles Girlfriends.you'll see what type of comedy I am talking about and the hilarious way they handle sexual matters. you might like it!

I watched last night's show where they each went to see a masseuse who caused all four of them to experience the big O and I didn't find it really vulgar and I think I'm rather conservative. What strikes me more about this show is that these people are kind of lonely and have a lot of issues that require psychoanalysis. Comparing this to Frasier, I can see Kelsey Grammer's fingerprints all over this show. Single and lonely in the city. Just that on this show they're black women in LA.

As for William and Joan this is not so farfetched to me. He likes her, she only sees him as the big brother. Poor William.

o wow emptynest. u said all of this stuff about how girlfriends is way too vulgar and how it should b exactly like all of the other shows out here that are all uniform, but you never did really give a particular episode of girlfriends that offended u. maybe you're right, which episode was really out there for you? i also think in a day and age where everyone out here is using the same terms (in most cases they're much more vulgar things than girlfriends actually touches on) its a little satisfying that no one is sugar coating real life.
